This is a part of a body of work that's constantly evolving out of my live sessions. Manerva is deep charged with blues.

"The Face. Volume 2, Number 2, October 1988. By David Tipp

Hardly anybody is being that bold in Britain at the moment because everybody wants a hit, even if the royalties don't amount to a fraction of what counts as money these days. The exceptions are to be found with records like A CALLED GERALD's "Voodoo Ray" EP, thankfully full of unusual samples and free of those hard, bright hitbound drums. It's a record which seems to exist out of a burning desire to make music rather than slung together with all the heart and soul of a toy manufacturer."

Seems like nothing has changed ....

4th March: System 7 (featuring Gerald) album, "UP" released in May

Gerald has collaborated with System 7 (Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy) on two tracks - PositiveNoise and "I Want To Be A Verb" on their new album, "UP", which is released on 30th May 2011.

The following text is taken from The Junction (Cambridge, England, venue):

"System 7 release their new album UP on 30 May 2011 on A-Wave Records. The album will be preceded by the single PositiveNoise with a remix by Detroittechno luminary Carl Craig, to be released on Beatport exclusive on 09 May and on all other digital stores and vinyl on 23 May.

Carl Craig worked with System 7 on several tracks in the 1990s and two of his mixes are featured on the successful recently released digital catalogue album System 7 Classics. PositiveNoise is collaboration between System 7 and British house music legend A Guy Called Gerald who now lives in Berlin, and is one of two tracks on the album that they worked on together.

It will also have a video produced in Japanby ace animation team Mood Magic, who also made the acclaimed video for System 7’s Hinotori released in 2007. The PositiveNoise video will be released to TV and youtube on April 11th, as part of the build up to the album release.

Up is the first album of new System 7 material since 2007’s Phoenix, which was heavily influenced by the work of Japanese manga pioneer Osamu Tezuka. Much of the album, including the two tracks with A Guy Called Gerald were written in Berlin, and regular exposure to the contemporary Berlin techno scene has influenced System 7’ Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy to work with somewhat slower tempos than previously. Accordingly the new album has more of a techno and tech-house feel to it, still showcasing the unique System 7 sound with ultra modern production and a feeling of positivity. Also featured is System 7’s remix of Josh Wink’s Dolphin Smack – with the full approval and collaboration of Josh Wink.

2nd March: Gerald to release digital tracks soon
A Guy Called Gerald

In a new interview for Bloc, Gerald discusses releasing digital tracks in the near future:

"In the last couple of years, you have released some quality techno LPs in the form of the ‘Proto Acid’ and ‘Tronic Jazz’ Berlin Sessions. Are you working on another album at the moment?

I’ve consciously finished with the concept of albums and decided to try and put out individual tracks – kind of like how the Juicebox Records situation was. I’ve been holding off on putting releases out because I wanted to test the tracks on the dancefloors when I play live. So you will see a series of releases coming out on my own label digitally very soon."

February: "Falling" feat Gerald, Benno Blome, and Tom Clark - 12" out now

"In recent years the Berlin electronic music scene has become and opaque and complex mix of artists and styles. The city lives up to its reputation as the veritable mecca of techno, and the electronic wall of sound seems to bring people from all over the world. In this virtual ocean of rhythm and beats, Tom Clark and Benno Blome are like lighthouses: Two veterens of the scene who, since the beginning, and through their releases, sets and label creations, have provided musical inspiration for all those who have followed.

When these two dons decide to work on a collaboration, all of the dance obsessed masses sit up and take notice! The four tracks on their collective Highgrade release (including remixes from D.Diggler and Dario Zenker) will immediately flatter your ears. Concentrated, hypnotic and hammering beats subtly develop their own unique atmosphere. Clearly more than just a decorative accessory, the vocals sometimes whisper mysterious and dark, before coming back again deep and urgent. No wonder that they too are from another legend of the scene: British musician and DJ, A Guy Called Gerald. From the first to the last sound the result is a vortex, described by the name of the title track, "Falling". Let yourself fall into these tracks and listen. "

Released: 14th February 2011.
