16 December: Rote Fabrik Festival, Zurich, Switzerland |
Detailssamstag 16.12.00: facts: For all requests regarding tickets, reservation, programm we appreciate if you call directly: line-up: infotext: MUTE und Musikbüro präsentieren - A Guy called Gerald – live in concert! Don’t miss it! |
15 December: Vega, Copenhagen, Denmark |
A Guy Called Gerald Vega, Enghavevej fredag kl. 21. |
14 December: Voxhall, Aarhus, Denmark |
A Guy Called Gerald vendte i sommer tilbage efter fem års kun delvist frivillig tavshed i New York med albummet "Essence". |

DetailsLa Botanique 8|12 Orangerie Joi - A Guy called Gerald - Studio Pagol Joi GB The band Joi began in the early 1980s with brothers Farook and Haroon Shamsher who started as a DJ duo and soon went on to create groundbreaking world fusion music. They grew up in Bradford, England, but as kids moved to Brick Lane in London’s East End where their father ran a traditional music shop, and would record tapes in a back room to sell on the street. The Shamsher brothers learned tablas and flutes and began experimenting mixing their music with prerecorded songs from people like James Brown and Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn. They began DJing at neighborhood parties in the early 1980’s and then began organizing their own raves first under the name “League of Joi Bangla Youth Organisation,” then shortened to “Joi Bangla,” and finally shortened to simply “Joi.” A Guy called Gerald GB Where do you start with A Guy Called Gerald? A hidden gem, the gateway between Chicago house / Detroit Techno and the UK dance music explosion in the late 80s. He is one of a few special producers who entered dance music in the jacking zone. He is the first UK acid house producer and the first producer to have two instrumental dance tracks in the UK charts at the same. He formed 808 State with a drum machine, a 303, 2 Roland SH101s and 2 other humans. His collaborations stem from Frankie Knuckles, Goldie, Finley Quaye and Derrick May through to Herbie Hancock, remixed for David Bowie, Lamb, Stone Roses, Black Uhuru, Can, Tricky, Roman Fluegel and The Orb and toured with New Order, Tricky and Bebel Gilberto. 2 December: Maffia Club, Reggio Emilia, Italy |
Detailsmaffia circolo arci - viale ramazzini, 33 - reggio emilia - italy - tel. |

DetailsThe Showbox, From thestranger: DONALD GLAUDE, A GUY CALLED GERALD (Showbox) From his late '80s turn in acid house, producing club smashes with the likes of 808 State, to his seminal drum 'n' bass release Black Secret Technology in 1995 and beyond, Mancunian Gerald Simpson has remained a tireless traveler on the beat highway--taking some interesting detours down Electro Avenue and Detroit Drive along the way. The year 2000 finds him, after a five-year lull, still cruising along in the Black Secret lane, albeit at a somewhat kinder, gentler pace. Female vocalists--from Lamb's Louise Rhodes to the Deee-Lite-ful Lady Miss Kier--on his latest, Essence, are a welcome warm breath on the frosty surface of Gerald's d'n'b planet, though the album still retains a spacy cool that may make it tough for some to cozy up to. New material aside, disciples of dance music would be foolish to miss a session with the man who became an innovative player in so many subgenres, and whose trail of releases as both DJ, collaborator, and producer are a virtual Cliffs Notes history of the scene. Regie |

DetailsSympatik, Le Rex Club, Paris, France No information available (was listed on the !K7 website) "The only downside is the apparent absence of the big league DJs. Both Laurent Garnier and Carl Cox were pencilled in for sets, but neither of them seem to be present. Likewise, Gilles Peterson, Romanthony, Josh Wink, Dimitri From Paris, A Guy Called Gerald and Underground Resistance's Rolando are all in Paris for the consecutive Mix Move 2000 but, criminally, none of them play the festival's central event! In fact, the nearest we ever get to 'Knights of The Jaguar' is when some wise DJ drops the first 30 seconds of it into a mix of deep trance. The best thing is that it doesn't even matter, because the rest of the deck-wreckers surrender their sound systems to a flowing array of hard house and banging techno, with occasional diversions into drum'n'bass and jungle. Two wee floats house live percussionists creating a tantalising stream of Brazilian - jazz fusion, but the subtlety of their tracks is completely lost amidst the stew of breaks'n' beats, as Paris raves the afternoon away. DetailsThe Shine, (Venue has now closed, now known as The Canal Room) NME REVIEW: "Gerald Simpson, a.k.a. A Guy Called Gerald, ended his five-year drought on new material yesterday (June 30th) by performing to a packed house at Shine in New York City, where Simpson now makes his home. Finley Quaye was supposed to share the bill, but as Simpson later apologises, he couldn't make it. At times, the music slid into the background, as on soulful tracks like "Humanity", "Fever (or a Flame)", "Universal Spirit" and "Could You Understand". Then it rushes back, rattling the tiny club's rafters with earth-shaking bass. A ragga number skitters in; deep house grooves shuffle out. Then there's "Voodoo Ray", the acid house anthem that thrills the crowd immensely. " |

DetailsA Guy Called Gerald Live Plus Funkstörung (live), Stereo MC's (DJ), and Terranova (DJ) "A laptop, a mixing desk and sound like a stethoscope put to a troubled stomach, this, in essence, is Germany's Funkstörung. Sure, there are the operatives, Michael Fakesch and Chris De Luca, who first became renowned for remixing Wu-Tang Clan and Bjork. But they take electronica sheepishness to new levels, as they attempt to prove their headphones-filling mix of fragile melodies floating in dub swells can also waylay venues. Rewardingly, think LFO-deep techno, flashes of Detroit rhythm and an impressive range of clunking and spluttering. Think of a sound both as crisp as daybreak and as crushing as an electric storm. But don't, sadly, think that for too long... ...Because the gawky reticence of the Funkstörung duo is welcome compared to the ungainly cockiness of their rapper chum, MC Triple H. His lyrics seemingly informed by Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy, Ali G and Neuromancer, he emerges halfway through to ooze unconvincing menace. Then he leaps on the dancefloor to pester the small crowd into yelping karaoke-style into the mic. Then he nicks someone's beer. All traces of ice-cool techno gravitas disappeared some time ago. Next up is A Guy Called Gerald. This Mancunian - who started out with 808 State and who pretty much invented drum'n'bass but left Goldie, Grooverider et al to scoop the plaudits - has been living on the fringes for over a decade, but this, believe it or not, is his live debut in front of a paying audience. [Erm, no it isn't! - Nick] Perched as innocuously as Funkstörung behind his hardware, he introduces a slew of guest vocalists, including Lamb's Louise Rhodes, and, in tracks like 'Humanity' and 'Fever', a sound which sways uneasily between post-breakbeat chic landing right on time, and soul-tinged jungle emerging four years too late. Funny thing is, when Gerald goes back to the beginning of his peculiar 'career', the results are as modern as this month's latest technological breakthrough. The track in question is 'Voodoo Ray', the proto-rave barrage of irregular rhythms and funky chimes which rocked warehouses, introduced clubland to the ingenious phrase 'Mental!' and showed the then dominant US that the UK was getting the hang of dance. Ten years on, British dance music and culture rules, but Gerald hides in the shadows. Something tells you that's the way it will always remain. Andy Crysell" NME, 17th June 2000 |
