Details9 Dec: Fopp Record Store, 220-224 Tottenham Court Road, London, W1T 7PZ, England A Guy Called Gerald A Guy Called Gerald is the stage name for musician, record producer and DJ Gerald Simpson. He has proven to be among the most innovative modern electronic music figures to emerge during the 1980s. He is perhaps best known for his early work in the Manchester acid house scene in the late 1980s and the track "Voodoo Ray". At that time, he specialised in techno music produced using equipment such as the Roland TB-303 bass synthesiser and the TR-808 drum machine (he sourced much of his equipment from Johnny Roadhouse, a second-hand music shop on Oxford Road in Manchester). |
7 Dec: Electric City, Wax, Dublin, Ireland |
Details7 Dec: Electric City, Wax, South William St, Dublin, Ireland A Guy Called Gerald [Laboratory Instinct - Berlin] On Thursday December 7th we are very excited to welcome a dance music pioneer to Electric City for his first set in Dublin since back in the Voodoo Ray, A Guy Called Gerald. Since the late 80's, Manchester native, AGCG [real name Gerald Simpson] has proven to be among the most innovative modern music figures. His influence is international, and through his early experimentation with techno and acid house to his groundbreaking contributions to drum & bass, Simpson's art and craft has perpetually evolved. His set at EC is part of his current album tour appropriately titled Proto Acid - The Berlin Sessions. Which is an infectious 71-minute set recorded live that drenches Detroit-styled techno with sparkling electro, the album's 24 raw club-oriented tracks are all new and meticulously mixed in one long fluid move. The album is a result of experimentation over the last twelve months at private club sessions where he has literally taken his studio to the people. No gimmicks, no dj software, just pure raw undiluted music created for the dancefloor. "It's the culmination of a dream I've had since I started making music, and that's to take the studio into the club; this album is snapshot of those possibilities." and you can watch the great man in action as he performs this live in your EC living room. Support comes from A DJ Called Simon, who will be laying down some motor city sounds for the opening 90 minutes. |

Details12 Oct: Sweet 45's, Herbal Club, 10 / 14 Kingsland Road, Shoreditch, London, E2 8DA, England A Guy Called Gerald Presents his Sweet 45's Heavily influenced by his Jamaican roots; his father's blue-beat, ska and Trojan reggae record collection, his mother's pentecostal church sessions and the Jamaican Sound system (DJ) parties in Manchester's Moss Side area where he grew up, A Guy Called Gerald knows what makes people move. “I make music to dance to. If you can’t dance to it, it's not dance music - just like if you can’t eat it’s not food. If you've got no rhythm, don't dictate to people. I remember a time about 25 years ago dance music wasn't fashionable, it was just a feeling and for most it was and escape. It's been through the media/ fashion mill and picked up a few stragglers on the way - now's the time to shake 'em off. And I don't mean mimicking soul freedom. Prove your groove.” Sweet 45's is what this night's all about. An eclectic soundtrack of tracks that move you from past, present and future played by artists from all ends of the musical spectrum. Hosted by Spence and Jazz you'll get good vibes and open minded music until the early hours. Expect the unexpected! |
6 Oct: Journeys, The Egg, Kings Cross, London, England |
Details6 Oct: Journeys, The Egg, York Way, Kings Cross, London, England PROTO ACID TOUR LIVE @ Robert Owen's Journeys @ The Egg London ROOM ONE: Robert Owens ROOM TWO: AtJazz (Mantis) A GUY CALLED GERALD Senor Gerald became a household name in 1988 when his acid house anthem ‘Voodoo Ray’ raced up the UK charts and became an instant classic. The British acid house pioneer and drum'n'bass legend has influenced generations of music-makers with an incredible discography that's grown incrementally deeper since the ‘80s. Expect Detroit-styled techno drenching sparkling electro from the Manchester UK native and now Berlin resident. ATJAZZ Derby-based house producer Martin Iveson aka Atjazz found his feet making music for the computer games industry, and single-handedly wrote the music for multi-million selling arcade game Tomb Raider. Here he promotes his brand new album, Balance, which sees Atjazz at work with many superb artists. Peter Wraight, of Labfunk fame, and singers Ernesto, Clara Hill, Sarah-Jane Morris, Dawne B, Pegy Gale and Mr J all deliver stunning performances, plus there’s some mighty word wielding from Cee Rock and Hernandez. Superproducer Charles Webster has also collaborated on the album, which has led to a separate joint project called Version. They already have several remixes in the bag and an EP coming soon for Berlin’s Sonar Kollektiv, a label with which Atjazz has also produced songs for the new Clara Hill album, and just released the massive track ‘For Real’ on their sub label Innervisions. JOURNEYS This past year has seen JOURNEYS go from strength to strength with line-ups to rival any house night in London. In Room One, courtesy of resident Robert Owens, the emphasis is always firmly on the dance and the party, with sounds moving through all things disco, house and electro. Upstairs Dan Foat has played host to the deeper, more underground side of things. Previous guests have included Charles Webster, Larry Heard, Pepe Bradock, Kenny Hawkes, Ame, Asad Rizvi, Todd Terje, Rune Lindbaek, Jimpster, the list goes on. Look out this Winter for more killer line ups. |

Details30 Sep: Black Market Records, Tech House, Inside, 218 Richmond St. West, Toronto, Canada With resident DJ, Jason Ulrich: "Late Saturday night we ended up at a west-end loft space for Blackmarket's presentation of UK dance pioneer A Guy Called Gerald, aka Gerald Simpson. These days, Simpson's packed away the vinyl and turntables in favour of two laptops running studio software, which allows him to remix and improvise tracks live on the spot as opposed to using the computers to DJ or rework other people's material. Usually, this sort of live electronic performance is much shorter than a DJ set due to the amount of preparation involved, but in this case he ended up starting relatively early and playing most of the night, longer than many people typically mix records. |

Details17 Aug: A Charity Event For Get Kids Going, Plastic People, 147 Curtain Road, London, England ANDREA PARKER PRESENTS… TOUCHIN’ BASS runs a double-headed charity event with a difference at Plastic People on Thursday 17th August 2006. This dual launch party and fundraiser will donate all proceeds to the Kids Get Going! charity Get Kids Going! Get Kids Going! helps disabled children take part in sport by providing specialist sports wheelchairs, sports grants and year round support. They can then compete in marathons, triathlons, tennis, athletics, skiing, rugby, basketball etc. With your help, many could become Paralympic champions and world record holders. As well as donating all proceeds on the night, later this year Andrea Parker will be making a sponsored climb to the roof of Africa, along the Machame route to the snow-capped summit of Kilimanjaro, 19,343 ft above the Great Rift Valley. Further donations can be made at https://www.justgiving.com/andreaparker A Guy Called Gerald The British acid house pioneer and drum’n’bass legend issues his own superb full-length on the German imprint Laboratory Instinct, the appropriately-titled Proto Acid, The Berlin Sessions. Drenching Detroit-styled techno in sparkling electro, the set, recorded live in one session using two laptops and a DJ mixer at Gerald’s Diehold Studio, flows with a relaxed ease. With one exception (“Auto Rebuild,” the third track, is a remake of 1990’s “Automannik”), the album’s 24 raw, club-oriented tracks are all new and were created over the last year in Berlin. The collection departs from the style of his last full-length, To All Things What They Need, in many ways, the most obvious being the absence of singing. Asked why he decided to make Proto Acid, The Berlin Sessions wholly instrumental, Simpson doesn’t mince words. “On my last two albums, I felt pressured to include vocals,” he replies. “Nowadays, I feel singers should be put on a bale of hay with a piece of straw hanging out of their mouths while playing acoustic guitar - keeping it real, if you know what I mean. I want to make music for clubs and sometimes you just have to get down and dirty into the machines and, to take it there, you can’t hold anyone’s hand. Some things just don’t need a vocal. What I’m trying to do is keep myself entertained as well as give the punters something new.” At this stage in his career, one might assume that Simpson has covered every base imaginable, but apparently that’s not so. Referring to the new release, he says, “It’s the culmination of a dream I’ve had since I started making music, and that’s to take the studio into the club; this album is snapshot of those possibilities.” His live set at Touchin’ Bass will showcase his new tracks alongside some of his classic repertoire making this a not to be missed album launch party! A Guy Called Gerald – Proto Acid The Berlin Sessions will be available Rob Hall Rob Hall (aka Ad Vanz) is one of the founders of skam records and a part time member of Gescom (a project that includes members of Autechre and various other producers, DJs and artists). His varied and infectiously danceable DJ sets are known to encompass many styles of dance music, from early eighties industrial and pop through to electro, techno, jungle, and electronica of all types and from many eras, his keen ear for new sounds can be heard in his effortlessly flowing sets. Details28 July: Playtime Club, The Egg, York Way, Kings Cross London, England PLAYTIME FRI JUL 28 But who ARE these crazy DJ persons? A GUY CALLED GERALD (BERLIN) The man behind house classic Voodoo Ray is about to launch a new album in August. Playtime will be your first chance to hear it in the UK - live. DAVID DURIEZ (BRIQUE ROUGE / FRANCE) The don of jackin' French house music and one of Playtime's quarterly international residents. He did Ministry with us last month; this month he's taking centre stage in our jackin' main room. His last gig blew Playtime apart. MIIKE MONDAY (ONLY RESIDENCY WORLDWIDE) "One of the 100 reasons dance music still rules" - IDJ. "The remixers' remixer" - Mixmag. "Will be one of the main players of 2006" - DJ. His first artist album, Smorgasboard, is out first week Sep - probably the only album that's ever been able to put the wind up both the Big Chill cheery electronica crew and the dark-and-dirty DJ Hell crowd. BIG DADDY (RESIDENT) "My club, my rules" - as Big Daddy says. But they’re not the rules you find at other clubs. For starters, Playtime is one of the last truly mixed nights in London - a throwback to the acid house days when homos and heteros partied together and no-one gave a shit which way you swung. Then there’s the Playtime sound - jackin’, dirty as hell, with a thread of funk running from sparse to deep to robotic to truly twisted. They call it "the club that whacks you on the arse with the racing post and calls you princess" - and as TimeOut says "anyone who takes it too seriously is missing the point..." NATHAN G (OM / AUSTRALIA) One of Australia's biggest DJs and one of few Australians to have a solid international release schedule - on Om, Transport and other labels that can carry the funky with a bit of house grunt. This is the third time Nathan has done Playtime - he'll be setting up the main room in preparation for the jackin' nonsense to come from M Duriez and M Monday... BISH (ON-REE) From early days clubbing at Urban Gorilla, Bish has always had an eye on new sounds. He's now one of the founders of On-Ree, an intimate little electronic house party at a bar in Shoreditch - and a new London promotion put together to showcase the best in nasty new house music ... PLAYTIME FRI JULY 28 - 4TH BIRTHDAY! 10PM-6AM, £14 or £12 with SMS/e-flyer at www.playtime-club.com. At Egg, 200 York Way, Kings Cross N7. 020 7609 8364. „I make music to dance to. If you can ´t dance to it, it ´s not dancemusic”, so die einfache Erklärung für die Musik, die er macht. Think back to the days when Mondays were Happy, 808 was the name of a state and Haçienda was more than just a Spanish word - to an era that produced the most definitive soundtrack ever, for each generation to follow. 808 State, Jon Da Silva and A Guy Called Gerald lead the revolution in the clubs, while Clint Boon and the Freaky Dancin' Bez lead the revolution on the stage. Oh, and there was some label called Factory Records run by a guy called Anthony Wilson. And for one summer evening only, Madchester is back "in the area", with all six legendary outfits taking to the stage once more - for the party of the decade... And God made Madchester." |

Details6 May: Recycle @ Icon Berlin (LIVE), cantianstr. |

1 April: Split, The Key, Kings Cross, London, England |
Details1 April: Split, The Key, Lazer Road (Off York Way), Kings Cross, London, England The SPLIT Label Launch Party Joining residents BEN SIMS & CHRIS FINKE: A GUY CALLED GERALD [LIVE] Room 2 Hosted By: VINYL UNDERGROUND featuring: AIDY WEST and friends special guest: DOMU Following their rammed to the rafters party with UR boys SUBURBAN KNIGHT and DJ 3000 at The Key on February 4th, SPLIT hit us with another great line-up to celebrate the launch of Split Recordings. The debut release will be a double-pack of remixes of A GUY CALLED GERALDS's original 1988 acid house anthem 'BLOW YOUR HOUSE DOWN’ featuring mixes from BRITISH MURDER BOYS, FREAKS, PAUL MAC, CHRIS FINKE, BEN SIMS and SMITH & SELWAY for an absolute belter of a launch release. Alongside SPLIT residents CHRIS FINKE and BEN SIMS the label launch party will also feature a special guest appearance from Detroit legend KENNY LARKIN, A GUY CALLED GERALD [live], BRITISH MURDER BOYS [aka SURGEON & REGIS], a live set from PAUL MAC and Room 2 will be hosted by VINYL UNDERGROUND feat. AIDY WEST, DOMU and friends. KENNY LARKIN is one of the chief innovators of Detroit's so called 'second wave' of techno producers. He began his music career in 1990 and after serving two years in the U.S. Air Force repairing computers, returned to Detroit to pursue stand up comedy. During his pursuit, he, along with other Detroit club goers, witnessed the birth of a new genre of music at local clubs. What came to be called “Detroit Techno.” Kenny went on to release two of the first singles for Richie Hawtin and John Acquaviva’s fledgling Plus 8 records, the classic ‘War of the Worlds’ under his Dark Comedy moniker for Transmat, several releases for his own Art of Dance stable as well as albums for Warp and most recently Peacefrog. However, not only one of Detroit’s finest producers, Kenny is also a joy to behold behind the decks and SPLIT are delighted to have him play at their label launch night. A GUY CALLED GERALD became a household name in 1988 when his acid house anthem ‘Voodoo Ray’ raced up the UK charts and became an instant classic. However, lurking on the B-side was another cut that was soon to gain cult like status. As Gerald himself remembers: “The really strange thing about Blow Your House Down and Detroit was that everywhere else on the planet I went people introduced me as A GUY CALLED GERALD who did Voodoo Ray but in Detroit I was introduced as A GUY CALLED GERALD who did Blow Your House Down." ‘Blow Your House Down’ has for those in the know been just as influential as it’s A sides compatriot in shaping the music of clubland today. SPLIT Records are delighted, nay chuffed to bits, to be launching their label with GERALDS's classic track at the helm. So of course the dancefloor maestro had to be there for the launch and will be playing a live set, reflective of his numerous productions, taking in everything from house to techno, drum n bass and electro. Under the title of BRITISH MURDER BOYS SURGEON and REGIS have adventured deeper into their industrial influences with 12 inches both on Counterbalance and Downwards and remixes for Alexander Kowalski and of course A GUY CALLED GERALD'S classic "Blow Your House Down". Their performance is not a live act in the conventional sense. They occupy the grey area between live act and DJ using and abusing modern technologies for their performance. A BRITISH MURDER BOYS performance is unique, improvised, stylish and brutal and just the tonic for the SPLIT label launch party. The past couple of years have seen PAUL MAC’S profile raise dramatically thanks mainly to high profile releases on Sino, Intec, Theory, Tronic, and Ingoma plus a handful of tours to the likes of Brazil, Venezuela, Columbia, Japan and his residency’s at the SPLIT and Retro-vert parties. PAUL is currently working on his first collection of audio loops for release on www.audiobase.com in early 2006 and has recently completed his third studio album for BEN SIMS Ingoma label, which should be released in this spring. As a regular spinner at SPLIT parties it’s great to have Macca playing live, showcasing his superb productions in room 1. Room 2 is hosted by VINYL UNDERGROUND who celebrate 12 years of supply superb and hard to find electronic music. Established by VU’s AIDY WEST in 1994 it has now grown into one of the main sources for underground music in the UK. Specialising in the deeper side of new underground music from Detroit electro to soulful New York garage to London's fusion nu-jazz sounds, AIDY and the VU crew will be spinning classics both old and new upstairs. Having been DJing for around 11 years from the age of 14, DOMINIC STANTON's [aka DOMU] musical journey began with UK hip-hop, which led to lessons in jungle, Detroit, Brazilian, jazz, funk, soul…the list go ones…with a basic premise of anything that is soulful is in the bag. As a producer, Sonar Circle was the first moniker used in the realm of drum and bass on the reinforced label around 1996. The first DOMU 12" was released on 2000 Black in the summer of 99, with the first DOMU LP "Up and Down" released on Archive in september '01. Since then highlights have come in the form of the Rima album on JCR [with Volcov] and remixes for Cinematic Orchestra, Michelle Lawson, 4hero, King Britt and Jazzanova. Now doubt DOMU will be sprinkling his soulful, funk-induced productions and remixes into his set in room 2. THE KEY, situated opposite The Cross and underneath Canvas, is a superb space to hold our parties. Entrance is via Laser Road, clearly signed with a neon "KEY" sign as you head down towards The Cross. Once indoors you'll witness the dark scene of the main room complete with flashing floor. Turn left and head up into the elegant chandelier hallway, which leads up to the main bar which is populated with huge oak beams and leather sofas and will become room 2 for SPLIT. Tickets are priced £12 in advance plus any respective booking fee and/or postage if ordered from Ticketweb. Ticketweb Tickets are available now. Tickets will also available at 3 London record shops & Covert Records in Brighton, as listed below, from 1st March 2006: Featured Links: www.vinylunderground.co.uk Ticket Outlets COVERT RECORDS KINETEC RECORDS KNOW HOW RECORDS PHONICA RECORDS |

DetailsBudapestmassive presents: A GUY CALLED GERALD A Guy Called Gerald (!K7, Laboratory Instinct) - UK Elővételben: 2000Ft Az elővételes jegyek limitált darabszámban szerda-csütörtöktől kaphatóak a következő helyeken: Trancewave: VI. Révay köz 2. A Guy Called Gerald A mai modern tánczenék nyolcvanas évek végi születése óta A Guy Called Gerald az egyik főszereplő. Már az 1988-as nagy áttörés, a Szerelem Nyara (Summer of Love) talán legismertebb himnuszát, az akkor abszolút újdonságszámba menő acid house-os Vodoo Ray-t is ő jegyezte. Tagja volt a legendás 808 State formációnak. Szinte az összes stílusba belekóstolt, előttük járt, mindegyiket átlényegítette, egyedi ízt adott hozzájuk, és egyben ki is lépett szűk kategóriájukból: acid house, techno, drum 'n' bass, breakbeat... 1995-ös Black Secret Technology albuma az ezredvégi urbánus hangzás legreprezentatívabb opusainak egyikeként vonult be a tánczene történetébe. Mégsem teremtett iskolát, magányos géniuszként, csendes szemlélődőként járja útjait. Essence, To All Thinks What They Need albumjai a korábbiaknál is kiforrottabb, egyetemesebb dolgozatok. Napjainkban is igazi szonikus kísérletező, hamisítatlan futurista hangpionír. Kömlődi Ferenc More photos here |
