Fu il primo produttore britannico di acid house ad entrare nella classifiche della musica dance delle UK charts.
La scena di Manchester alla fine degli anni '80 era irradiata dal Hacienda.
Era un luogo che è cresciuto fino a diventare un terreno fertile per artisti del calibro di Laurent Garnier e Chemical Brothers e nell'estate dell'amore l’Hacienda aveva una melodia a tema chiamata Voodoo Ray.
Fu la prima uscita di A Guy Called Gerald nel 1988 e divenne un classico fondamentale che fissò saldamente la musica house britannica sulla carta geografica. Nell'ambito della prima incarnazione di 808 State, ha coprodotto anche un altro classico del Hacienda, Pacific State.
Le sue collaborazioni comprendono da Frankie Knuckles, Goldie, Finley Quaye e Derrick May fino a Herbie Hancock e remix per David Bowie, Lamb, Stone Roses, Black Uhuru, Can, Tricky, Roman Fluegel e The Orb e tournée con New Order, Tricky e Bebel Gilberto.

Trump is coming to London in December for the NATO Heads of State summit, and on Tuesday 3rd December the Queen will be hosting a reception for him at Buckingham Palace. R3 Soundsystem will be taking to the streets that evening, to protest against the far-right politics of The Tories, Trump and Farage.
On Tuesday 3rd December R3 Soundsystem will be firing up in Trafalgar Square again to protest against Boris Johnson and his US counterpart at the No to Trump, No to NATO national demonstration.
This time, in association with Love Music Hate Racism and Stand Up to Racism, R3SS will be presenting an all-star line-up of artists from across the musical spectrum, united against the right-wing hijack of British politics.

A Guy Called Gerald es el nombre artístico del músico, productor y DJ Gerald Simpson (nacido el 16 de febrero de 1967 en Moss Side, Mánchester, Inglaterra).
Es más conocido por sus primeras obras en la escena acid house de Mánchester en los años 1980 cuando formaba parte del grupo 808 State. Comenzó su carrera en solitario hacia el final de esa década, labrándose una carrera gracias a grandes éxitos como el tema "Voodoo Ray". Posteriormente se especializó en el techno, muy influido por Detroit, produciendo música utilizando equipo clásico como la caja de ritmos TR 808 o el sintetizador de bajo TB 303. Está considerado como una figura importante en el nacimiento de las escenas hardcore y jungle en Londres.1

A Guy Called Gerald is 25+ years of dance music incarnate. From “Voodoo Ray” in 1988 to “Tronic Jazz” released on Germany’s respected Laboratory Instinct label in 2010, this man is a self-written bible of dance music.
He is one of a few special producers who entered dance when it was jackin’ and has never let up. He was the first UK acid house producer and achieved the rare feat of having not one but two instrumental dance tracks in the UK charts at the same time. He formed 808 State with a drum machine, a 303, 2 Roland SH101s and two other humans.

A Guy Called Gerald brings the party to our Terrace Bar.
He kick started Europe’s acid house frenzy releasing the first UK acid house record, the ’88 classic ‘Voodoo Ray’ and ‘Pacific State’ and went on to lay down the blueprint for jungle / drum n bass. Join him for a night of uncompromised beats for the final Terrace Sessions of the summer.

With our 'Rave in a Bagel Shop' series ending on a high of sell out shows, we thought it was time to light a new fire. With the festival season in full swing, we felt it was only right to bring the party back to the real home of house music, Manchesters original underground spot. We'll be transforming Souths Basement into a scene from the 90's acid house era that once thrived amongst our city.
A Guy Called Gerald is an innovator and originator. Together we'll be celebrating his 30 years independence and work in the game.
In his 20s, he was already making tunes with artists like Derrick May and co-founded 808 State, producing music that would go on to influence generations of artists all over the world. Gerald has been described as a ‘self written bible of dance music’, collaborating with seminal artists like Frankie Knuckles and releasing notable remixes of The Stone Roses, David Bowie and others. From the huge hit ‘Voodoo Ray’ to ‘How Long is Now’, Gerald has been forever forward-thinking and his art forever evolving.

Dreamland is hosting an official Happy Mondays After Show Party on Saturday 13th July, with A Guy Called Gerald and 808 State’s Andy Barker taking over the Hall By The Sea for one night only.
Tickets are £7.50 + booking fee in advance. Limited members tickets available at £5 + booking fee in advance.
You must buy a separate ticket to attend to the after party (not included in Happy Mondays tickets), last entry is 11.30pm.
This is an 18+ event.
The legendary Happy Mondays will headline the Scenic Stage, with support from 808 State, on 13th July from 7.30pm to 11pm.
Anyone wishing to attend the aftershow party – regardless of whether or not they bagged Happy Mondays tickets - can purchase a separate ticket in advance, and head over to Hall By The Sea from 10.30pm (last entry 11.30pm).
Once 808 State have finished warming up the crowds for Happy Mondays, DJ Andy Barker will get the party started, before former band mate and now iconic DJ and producer A Guy Called Gerald joins him for a night to remember.

Over the course of his career Gerald has collaborated with everyone from Frankie Knuckles and Goldie through to Derrick May and Herbie Hancock. His remix credits are equally impressive with reworks in his back catalogue for David Bowie, Lamb, Stone Roses, Can, Tricky and Roman Flügel as well as having toured with the likes of New Order and Bebel Gilberto.

Where do you start with A Guy Called Gerald? A hidden gem, the gateway between Chicago house / Detroit Techno and the UK dance music explosion in the late 80s. He is one of a few special producers who entered dance music in the jacking zone. He is the first UK acid house producer and probably the first producer to have two instrumental dance tracks in the UK charts at the same. He formed 808 State with a drum machine, a 303, 2 Roland SH101s and 2 other humans. His collaborations stem from Frankie Knuckles, Goldie, Finley Quaye and Derrick May through to Herbie Hancock, remixed for David Bowie, Lamb, Stone Roses, Black Uhuru, Can, Tricky, Roman Fluegel and The Orb and toured with New Order, and Bebel Gilberto.
When the history of postmodern dance music is written, he is ubiquitous: his visions, stylistic versatility, and open mindedness had a huge influence on the development of global dance culture. Very early on, he experimented with acid house and helped pioneer the style that was later called jungle and drum'n'bass.
The Manchester scene in the late 80s radiated from the Hacienda. It was a place which grew to be a breeding ground for the likes of Laurent Garnier and Chemical Brothers and in the Summer of Love the Hacienda had a theme tune called Voodoo Ray. It was A Guy Called Gerald's first release in 1988 and became a seminal classic that put British house music firmly on the map. As part of 808 State’s first incarnation he co-produced another Hacienda classic, Pacific State. He soon decided to concentrate on his solo project and toured worldwide (and with a quarter of a ton of equipment!) performing live.
In the early 90s he launched his own label Juice Box and released a series of 12"s that were the blueprint to what would become jungle. In 1992 he compiled these releases into the proto jungle classic "28 Gun Bad Boy" album. In 1995 he followed up with the definitive "Black Secret Technology" to critical acclaim. Black Secret Technology featured Finley's Rainbow with vocals by Finley Quaye and a collaboration with Goldie. Finley's Rainbow featured Finley Quaye who later re-released the tune on his debut album. In 2005 Knowledge Magazine ranked "28 Gun Bad Boy" EP was as the No. 1 jungle single of all time. His sound was an inspiration to many - Goldie, LTJ Bukem and DJ Krust have all stated his influence.
But never wanting to be stereotyped into any particular style of music his sound continued to develop. In 2000 he signed with !K7 Records and released "Essence" with guest vocals from singer/songwriter Wendy Page, Lady Kier and Finley Quaye. In 2005 the down tempo "To All Things What They Need". In 2005 he launched his Sugoi and Protechson labels. His latest album "Proto Acid / The Berlin Sessions", released on Berlin's Laboratory Instinct, is an infectious 71 minute continuous mix recorded live.
2008 marks 20 years of A Guy Called Gerald in dance music and to celebrate a definitive collection of A Guy Called Gerald’s back catalogue is planned for release featuring rare and unreleased tracks and remixes. In July a remaster of 1995’s jungle classic “Black Secret Technology” was reissued. And in August “In Ya Head feat. Mia” came out on Berlin’s favourite Perlon Records.
He continues to tour bringing his studio into the clubs worldwide playing anywhere from 2 to now legendary 14 hour LIVE sets – no DJ software, no gimmicks, just raw, pure, undiluted AGCG riddums strictly for the dancefloor.

The Cause - London's DIY, Underground dance space is holding a UK wide fundraiser in honour of Keith Flint with ticket sales going to their partner charities dedicated to improving mental health and preventing suicide. 100% of ticket sales go to charity; 50% to The CALMzone, 50% to Mind.
The tour, curated in collaboration with NLA Artists, will be a UK wide celebration of the music Keith and The Prodigy inspired, inviting local heroes alongside those who the band shared line-ups with and whose records were played at events during their rise to fame.
Having raised over £5500 already and on track to double that from their London shows this Saturday, The Cause have partnered with venues and local collectives in Manchester, Sheffield, Brighton, Southampton, Leeds, Edinburgh, Sunderland, Glasgow, Southend and many other cities in the pipeline. Their aim is to raise maximum awareness and funds for mental health charities.
The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) is leading a movement against male suicide, the single biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK. Join the campaign to take a stand against male suicide and get the tools you need for action.
Mind provides information, advice and support to people affected by mental health problems. They work to prevent mental health problems, promote mental well being and ensure those with mental health problems are respected and included in their local communities.

Legendary British electronic artist Leftfield will play a DJ set in Hall By The Sea on 2nd February 2019, with support from A Guy Called Gerald.
Leftfield have been at the cutting edge of dance music since the 1990s, releasing albums that have become some of the most influential electronic records of all time around the world with their debut LP Leftism being widely regarded as one of the most boundary-pushing electronic LPs ever released.
Supporting Leftfield on the evening is Gerald Simpson better known as ‘A Guy Called Gerald’, a British DJ, Producer and Musician known for his huge hit ‘Voodoo Ray’ which influenced the Manchester acid house scene in the 1980s. 2019 marks his 30th anniversary tour, cementing his reputation as a key figure on the electronic music underground circuit.

Since the 1980s and the advent of the summer of love, A Guy Called Gerald, has proven to be among the most innovative modern music figures. His influence is international, and through his versatility he has spawned genres and generations of music culture. From his early experimentation with techno and acid house to his groundbreaking contributions to drum & bass music, AGCG’s art and craft has perpetually evolved regardless of his individual successes in each of those genres.
