11 December: Memory Box Parties Presents: A Guy Called Gerald Live In Acid, The Bussey Building, Peckham, London, England |
DetailsMemorybox presents A Guy Called Gerald at Bussey Building / The CLF Art Cafe Date / Friday 11 December 2015 Line-up / A Guy Called Gerald (live), Robin Ball Continuing its regular sonic memoirs of electronic music, Memory Box returns on Friday 11 December with A Guy Called Gerald doing a special “Live Acid Jam”. "For me Live music is exactly that. Playing live for me is coming directly from me. I can't tell you what is going to happen but expect a performance of electronic music made in real time with a nod to the past. Taste the future." A Guy Called Gerald An iconic name in dance music, A Guy Called Gerald stands out for consistent innovation, excellence and refusal to compromise. A Guy Called Gerald kick started Europe’s acid house frenzy with his ’88 classic ‘Voodoo Ray’ and 'Pacific State' (as part of 808 State) and went on to lay down the blueprint for jungle / drum n bass. Nine albums and 25 years of independence later, he continues to push the boundaries of electronic dance music touring worldwide bringing his "true school" flavour to a world overloaded with pop pap. Although his remixes are relatively enviable including the likes of David Bowie, Cabaret Voltaire, Black Uhuru, Finley Quaye, Lamb, Tricky and The Stone Roses, it is Gerald’s own productions and refusal to plough anyone’s furrow but his own which has marked him out. A Guy Called Gerald is responsible for the birth of British dance music as you know it today and continues to explore what is possible both in the studio and in the club with his "Live in Session" performances. Memory Box is a project that celebrates the influences of today’s electronic music scene and encapsulates some of the most memorable moments in its time. A Memory Box party covers the history of electronic club music, hearing its origins from the legends and luminaries whilst exploring the influences the past has on today's music and how we shape the future. |

A Night With A Guy Called Gerald, The Reading Rooms, Dundee, Scotland |
DetailsA Night With...A Guy Called Gerald at The Reading Rooms Date / Saturday 7 November 2015 A Guy Called Gerald, Dicky Trisco You can’t speak about the history of UK electronic dance music without saying the words A Guy Called Gerald. It’s that simple. Gerald Simpson was a pioneer, an innovator and an inspiration to a whole generation of DJs and producers who followed in his footsteps. He is a bona fide dance music legend. Let's go way back…Gerald grew up around Manchester and was influenced by many genres of black dance music, but especially the electrofunk and electro sounds that emerged in the city during the early to mid 1980s. However it was the Acid House explosion at the end of that decade that really signalled that A Guy Called Gerald's time had truly come. A key player in the UK dance scene that grew out of the influential sounds being exported over from New York, Chicago and Detroit to fuel underground clubs and raves, he produced a number of massive releases for the Warp label in the late 1980s, such as the all time classic Voodoo Ray. He was also a member of seminal UK dance act 808 State who’s Pacific State is regularly listed as one of the most influential dance tracks of all time. So to cut a long story short, this man is basically personally responsible for many of what became the anthems of UK dance music. Unlike other leading figures who were there at the dawn on Acid House and Rave Culture, Gerald however has never sold out to commercialism and has stayed true to his underground roots releasing quality sounds and touring constantly playing his live sets or DJing. This attitude has kept him at the top of his game with a constant global touring schedule plus appearances at only the very best underground festivals such as Electric Elephant in Croatia. The last time we had him at A Night With…Gerald blew the roof off The Reading Rooms. And he partied like it was 1999…what a night it was! We expect nothing less from The Man Called Gerald this time. DO NOT MISS THIS!!! A legend is in town….. Quality support on the night is provided by local hero Dicky Trisco. |

DetailsAnalog Room-Finest Friday: A Guy Called Gerald, Jonas Kopp, Siamak Amidi & More at Level 41 Date / Friday 25 September 2015 Finest Friday is back! Line-up: Tickets: - Pre sale AED 100 1st Early Bird release - Door 17-20 AED FREE FOR ALL A Guy Called Gerald: Where do you start with A Guy Called Gerald? A hidden gem, the gateway between Chicago house / Detroit Techno and the UK dance music explosion in the late 80s. He is one of a few special producers who entered dance music in the jacking zone. He is the first UK acid house producer and probably the first producer to have two instrumental dance tracks in the UK charts at the same. He formed 808 State with a drum machine, a 303, 2 Roland SH101s and 2 other humans. His collaborations stem from Frankie Knuckles, Goldie, Finley Quaye and Derrick May through to Herbie Hancock, remixed for David Bowie, Lamb, Stone Roses, Black Uhuru, Can, Tricky, Roman Fluegel and The Orb and toured with New Order, Tricky and Bebel Gilberto. 2008 marks 20 years of A Guy Called Gerald in dance music and to celebrate a definitive collection of A Guy Called Gerald’s back catalogue is planned for release featuring rare and unreleased tracks and remixes. In July a remaster of 1995’s jungle classic “Black Secret Technology” was reissued. And in August “In Ya Head feat. Mia” came out on Berlin’s favourite Perlon Records. He continues to tour bringing his studio into the clubs worldwide playing anywhere from 2 to now legendary 14 hour LIVE sets – no DJ software, no gimmicks, just raw, pure, undiluted AGCG riddums strictly for the dance floor. Jonas Kopp: Few would dispute Jonas Kopp as being one of the most prominent and exciting figures to emerge from Argentina in recent years. An accomplished producer, in-demand remixer and versatile performer, he has fast transitioned from Buenos Aires’ best-kept secret to one of contemporary house and techno’s leading lights, on a par with genre-defying luminaries such as Levon Vincent, Ben Klock, Marcel Dettman and Ryan Elliot. Jonas’ music career began early on; by 19 years old he had made his first full length CD under the name of Area 64 whilst working as resident DJ at a popular FM radio station. In 2006 he made his debut proper on Pfirter’s MindTrip Music imprint, and has been flirting with a myriad of styles ever since. But whether it’s deep Chicago-inspired house (Curle), or driving basement-ready techno (Stroboscopic Artefacts, Krill Music, Ostgut Ton), cavernous basslines and mesmerising rhythms flavour his eclectic discography throughout. It is this distinct and powerful signature that make records like ‘Reforce’—his first four track EP for Deeply Rooted House, and most diverse yet—possible. Where the surging and the abstract, the uplifting and the slow-burner all find themselves side-by-side. |

DetailsSEPT 05 5 September at 18:00–03:00 Roadtrip! The Discotech residents will be going up north to play alongside Middlesborough's finest RiffRaff and a very special guest to be announced soon. Voodoo Ray! Line up: A Guy Called Gerald + Discotech residents - Jordan Diston Those who went last time will tell you this absolutely went off. Travel up with us on the Discotech mini bus as this is a party you won't want to miss (expect utter mayhem on the bus). We have limited number of spaces for this event so please contact either James George Davison or Jordan Diston to book you place. More about Riff Raff -> 'It initially began 12 years ago as a release launch party for my first release as Section 75 with a track called Hermits Curve on Source Of Gravity recordings but then became a monthly event to cater for everybody in the North East of England who likes twisted electronic house and techno music. Luckily I caught the back end of the UK rave era in the 90’s as I was attending massive events at the Sugar Shack, Shindig, Back 2 Basics, Gatecrasher as well as Ibiza and the vibe of those party’s back then was completely different to many events now because people literally went to these events for the music and to just let themselves go and dance like nobody was watching, it’s this atmosphere that we keep alive at riffraff, basically you leave all ego and problems at the door and come into our event to be as one with the people in there and with the artists and DJ’s music. The bookings are always cutting edge and up front with some classics thrown in for good measure and we only put on DJ’s whose music we like for a start but also if a person is contributing to the scene in some way and has got our respect and they play good music that we love then they will find themselves in our gaff.' - extracted from 5W/ Lee Pennignton |

6 June: Parallel Dimensions, Lakota, Bristol, England |
DetailsParallel Dimensions: 1st Birthday Bash with A Guy Called Gerald at Lakota Date / Saturday 6 June 2015 Room 1: Parallel Dimensions Room 2: Studio 94 - Bristol Room 3: Empathy SURPRISES LIE AROUND EVERY CORNER; Birthdays call for an extra-special celebration. You can’t get more extra-special than the line up we have put together as a toast to our first year promoting parties in Bristol. Having previously brought 808 State, Graeme Park and Copyright to the West Country, we have secured the services of two more stone cold legends – Mancunian acid house pioneer A GUY CALLED GERALD, and New York 80s/90s deep-house heavyweight VICTOR SIMONELLI. With the line-up being completed by a strong local line-up – including the city’s own veteran house hero, Deli G, rising tribal house/techno fusionists Bacchus, and the resident DJs from Studio 94 and Empathy – this party looks set to be another belter. A Guy Called Gerald should need little introduction. A former breakdancer and footworker turned acid house producer, he was one of the founder members of 808 State and had a hand in producing the act’s seminal 1988 set, Newbuild. His stint as a member was short-lived, though, as he quickly went solo to produce one of the greatest house records of all time, the peerless “Voodoo Ray”. It dominated dancefloors in the summer of ‘88, rocketed up the charts, and inspired a whole generation of British DJs to turn to music production independently. Since then, Gerald Simpson has continued to push things forward, turning his hand to drum & bass, techno, deep house and electronic jazz, recording a string of superb albums for labels including CBS, Studio !K7 and Laboratory Instinct. For Parallel Dimensions, he’ll be playing a rare live set, jamming out acid and techno in the legendary surroundings of Lakota. He’ll be joined in the main room by local duo Bacchus, and the our very own residents. Room Two: Hosted by Studio 94’s fast-rising Boogie Nights party, is being headlined by another legend, New York house DJ/producer Victor Simonelli. A prolific producer since the turn of the 1990s, Simonelli has been responsible for some of the best house music to come out of New York, recording for a dizzying array of labels (including Nu Groove, Tribal America, Fourth Floor, Sub-Urban, UMM, King Street Sounds, Vibe and Playtime), under a similarly wide range of aliases (Groove Committee, Cloud 9, Solution). The Brooklyn native is a rare visitor to these shores, so his appearance at Parallel Dimensions should not be missed. He’ll be joined in room two by Parallel Dimensions regular Deli G (a house, garage and disco player on the Bristol scene since the 1980s), and the Studio 94 residents. Room 3: Hosted by long-running Bristol clubbing institution Empathy. For the best part of 15 years, the Empathy crew has been joining the dots between tech-house, progressive house, deep house and techno, throwing parties at a wide range of Bristol venues (including Dojo, Timbuk2 and Bar Latino). They’ll be bringing a little of that flavour to Parallel Dimensions’ first birthday, turning Lakota’s intimate third room into a sweaty, heads-down dance. To make the party even more magical, Lakota will be dressed in immersive décor throughout, and interactive performers will roam the club’s corridors, rooms, bars and outside spaces. Parallel Dimensions are asking clubbers to come dressed in “second summer of love rave attire”, to truly get into the retro-futurist party spirit. As Parallel Dimensions founder Laila McKenzie says: “Expect the unexpected!” With the buzz still live from our party with 808 State; we offer to you an invitation to celebrate with us. We want to ensure that EVERYONE is able to join in the festivities, we have slashed our ticket prices as a one time only offer to allow yourself to be fully submerged into house music's heritage. #Educate. #Celebrate. ± 80's & 90's Rave-Attire Encouraged ± KICKERS // PUFFA JACKETS // HOODED T-SHIRTS // GLOWSTICKS // HIGH PONY TAILS // CROP TOPS // WHITE GLOVES // DUNGAREE's // TIE-DIE T-SHIRTS // WHISTLES // FLORESCENT SCRUNCHY's // CRAZY SUNGLASSES // BRIGHT BANDANA's // WACKY HAIRBANDS // OVERSIZED ACID-WASH SHIRTS // JELLY SHOES // WHITE SPORTS SOCKS // ACID SMILEYS // SHELL-SUIT JACKETS. |

DetailsSat 09/05 Porto Sant’Elpidio / Harmonized / LIVE RBMA pres. A Guy Called Gerald and DJ Pierre @ Porto Sant'Elpidio Time: 11:00 PM A Guy Called Gerald (live), DJ Pierre, Low.E Red Bull Music Academy sets up a very special night with a live set by Mancunian techno pioneer A Guy Called Gerald, alongside NYC-via-Chicago acid house trailblazer DJ Pierre on decks at Harmonized in Porto Sant'Elpidio on May 9th. This guy called Gerald Simpson has done a lot to shape British electronic music into what it is today. Starting off in Manchester, he became a founding member of 808 State, who he left to release his seminal acid house classic Voodoo Ray in 1989. With his label Juice Box Records, he helped lay the foundations for what became jungle and drum‘n’bass and launched his classic album Black Secret Technology which remains one of the genre's coveted milestone. After relocating to Berlin, Gerald has started to focus on the dancefloors once again, releasing tracks on !K7, Laboratory Instinct, Perlon and keeping proof his musical mastery works outside of short lived trends. Chicago-born Nathaniel Pierre Jones aka DJ Pierre is a true dance music pioneer. Besides recording with his myriad of aliases, it was his early acid house group Phuture that changed the game forever with the Acid Tracks EP in 1987, an undisputed classic and key moment in dance music. After heading to New York 1990, Pierre became in-house producer and head of A&R at Strictly Rhythm and was responsible for releasing another string of hugely influential tracks. With his signature Wild Pitch sound he graced the world with a plethora of timeless tracks and remixes that influenced DJs and producers around the globe in years to come. |

DetailsAPR 17 Hoxton FM On FRIDAY 17TH April from 3-5PM GET.TRONiC is joined by JB & A Guy Called GERALD aka Selecta Bros for a pre party chat and guest mix online ahead of there night at Basing House. Selecta Bros is A Guy Called Gerald and JB - two music heads with well over 25 years of in-depth experience in dance music. "We had to join forces in order to save dance music from the evil powers of Emperor Ming. There has been a serious lack of groove and we decided enough was enough and something had to done. "We first met when JB was doing Retox parties at Sosho. JB invited Gerald down to play and he was totally blown away by the vibe that actually by then he had forgotten existed. Gerald felt that dance music had been calcified so when he went to Retox it was clear it had not totally died. Over the years we started to play more and more together and an illustrious partnership was formed. "The Selecta Bros music selection is more dynamic than what you'll hear in your average parties today. We focus on selecting our music the way it used to be. It is not genre-based, it's music based. It's not just minimal, deep house or techno, the idea is to tell a story and to be a journey through the best of dance music. But we are not just dictating to the dancefloor we are reading the dancefloor the old school way. With the new Selecta label in the pipeline and Selecta Bros tracks and remixes out soon. Proof of the pudding is in the tasting. So come down and check us out. 4 April: Antidote Beijing, Dada, Beijing, China |
DetailsA Guy Called Gerald at Dada Beijing Date / Saturday 4 April 2015 Line-up / A Guy Called Gerald APR 04 A GUY CALLED GERALD (!K7, SONY MUSIC / UK) Saturday, April 4, 2015 @ Dada Beijing .... what a *massive* night here kiddies, double bang headliners with *true legend* A GUY CALLED GERALD and JIGSAW ... what ?! The Antidote presents... Where do you start with A Guy Called Gerald? When the history of postmodern dance music is written he is ubiquitous: his visions, his stylistic versatility and open mindedness had a huge influence on the development of global dance culture. Very early on, he experimented with acid house and helped pioneer the style that was later called jungle and drum'n'bass. Fiercely independent he's preparing himself for a string of new releases, the launch of his online shop and touring worldwide. The Manchester scene in the late 80s radiated from the Hacienda. It was a place which grew to be a breeding ground for the likes of Laurent Garnier and Chemical Brothers and in the Summer of Love the Hacienda had a theme tune called Voodoo Ray. It was A Guy Called Gerald's first release in 1988 and became a seminal classic that put British house music firmly on the map. As part of 808 State’s first incarnation he co-produced another Hacienda classic, Pacific State. He soon decided to concentrate on his solo project and toured worldwide (and with a quarter of a ton of equipment!) performing live. In the early 90s he launched his own label Juice Box and released a series of 12"s that were the blueprint to what would become jungle. In 1992 he compiled these releases into the proto jungle classic "28 Gun Bad Boy" album. In 1995 he followed up with the definitive "Black Secret Technology" to critical acclaim. Black Secret Technology featured Finley's Rainbow with vocals by Finley Quaye and a collaboration with Goldie. Finley's Rainbow featured Finley Quaye who later re-released the tune on his debut album. In 2005 Knowledge Magazine ranked "28 Gun Bad Boy" EP was as the No. 1 jungle single of all time. His sound was an inspiration to many - Goldie, LTJ Bukem and DJ Krust have all stated his influence. But never wanting to be stereotyped into any particular style of music his sound continued to develop. In 2000 he signed with !K7 Records and released "Essence" with guest vocals from singer/songwriter Wendy Page, Lady Kier and Finley Quaye. In 2005 the down tempo "To All Things What They Need". In 2005 he launched his Sugoi and Protechson labels. His latest album "Proto Acid / The Berlin Sessions", released on Berlin's Laboratory Instinct, is an infectious 71 minute continuous mix recorded live. He continues to tour bringing his studio into the clubs worldwide playing anywhere from 2 to now legendary 14 hour LIVE sets – no DJ software, no gimmicks, just raw, pure, undiluted AGCG riddums strictly for the dancefloor. |
3 April: Overground Bar, Bangkok, Thailand |
DetailsA Guy Called Gerald at Overground Bar Date / Friday 3 April 2015 Line-up / A Guy Called Gerald, Wasabi Bytes An iconic name in dance music, A Guy Called Gerald stands out for consistent innovation, excellence and refusal to compromise. He continues to be in demand worldwide with his Live In Session shows using a vast patchwork of past, present and future experimenting effortlessly between early acid house through abstract tech breaks into dreamscapes of futuristic oscillations. Since 2012 he has a side project with Graham Massey (808 State) called REBUILD performing live jams on the Roland machines. “How Long Is Now” was released on Bosconi Records in 2012. A live album Silent Sound Spread Spectrum followed from the Society of Sound Series – a collaboration between Bowers & Wilkins & Real World Studios in 2013. He is currently working on new productions for his live shows and his “Sound Gallery” studio. "I have decided the only way to give music to the people is raw and straight from the true school. I don't have to hide behind any trend or gimmicks. ie. analogue equipment and vinyl fetishism. I'm sorry to say but I still feel like I'm blazing the way forward only because everyone seems to be stuck in "retrogression" mode. Maybe they need a stop / start to get them out of the loop? I refuse to compromise when it comes to my sound. I realised that I'm the only real deal within dance music when I found it was impossible for me to sell out. This is the True School." * Cover Charge: 350B at the door (First come, first served, 150 capacity) |

21 March: Cassette Nine, Auckland, New Zealand |
DetailsA Guy Called Gerald at Cassette Number Nine Date / Saturday 21 March 2015 21:30 - 04:00 Line-up / A Guy Called Gerald (UK), Dirty Uncool, Azbo, Keepsakes, Mike P. A GUY CALLED GERALD. An iconic name in dance music, A Guy Called Gerald stands out for consistent innovation, excellence and refusal to compromise. This is the True School." "UK club culture has many people to thank for transforming the imported sound of America into the biggest youth movement my generation has experienced, but nobody else has redefined it so much with the character and soul of Britishness, creating music for both the feet and the head, and indelibly altering our cultural landscape." Mar 03 Suzanne Kraft packs a punch. A moniker of Diego Herrera, the origins of the name is still shrouded in mystery; but trust us when we say that his music contains absolutely no cheese. As the creative director of Dub Lab, partner of Blasé (with Eddie Ruscha) AND a member of the psychedelic outfit ‘Pharaohs’ – it is fair to say that this hard working L.A home-slice has a lot on his plate. The latest in his line of tasteful treats -‘Renee Running’ (under his alias ‘Dude Energy’ - out on Animals Dancing Records) – is a Balearic-infused sizzler that even the most discerning palate can appreciate Because you all have to miss out on a Piknic, and thats no fun so we are super excited to announce the addition of A Guy Called Gerald to the 15th of March! One of the founding members of 808 State, A Guy Called Gerald is an electronic music pioneer that has defined genres. Gerald Rydel Simpson was born in Manchester and now resides in Berlin, he is best known for his early work in the Manchester acid house scene in the late 1980s and the track "Voodoo Ray". At that time, he specialised in techno music produced using equipment such as the Roland TB-303 bass synthesiser and the TR-808 drum machine. Today he continues to tour bringing his studio into the clubs worldwide playing anywhere from 2 to now legendary 14 hour LIVE sets – no DJ software, no gimmicks, just raw, pure, undiluted AGCG rhythms strictly for the dancefloor. On Sunday 15th March he will be our very special guest alongside Running Backs, Suzanne Kraft... Don't Miss it! |

31 January: Bosconi Records Night, Tresor, Berlin, Germany |
Detailshttps://tresorberlin.com/event/tresor-meets-bosconi-records/ Sat 31 01 2015 23:59 Two of the most famous DJs in the world tonight in the most famous club in the world! Trivia bit: did you know that A Guy Called Gerald was in the original formation of 808 State? If any European electronic dance music artist could claim to be on the pulse of the moment from the get go, it is of course A Guy Called Gerald. In the fiery pit of the “Madchester” late 80s acid house madness, he was already beginning to produce the first of his many legendary tracks. ‘Voodoo Ray’ was first played at the infamous Hacienda and later exploded to number 12 on the UK music charts, becoming the best-selling independently released single of 1989. Moving through the decades with innovative style changes and collaborations with the gods of the genre, he called Berlin his home in 2004. A historic figure with a biography too long to cite, since 2009 Gerald continues to release exclusives and previously unreleased back catalogue via his web-based labels A Guy Called Gerald Records, Sugoi and Protechshon on his website, as well as production work on Bosconi. Nick Anthony Simoncino is an Italian producer, Deejay and collector of vinyl for over eleven years and boasts a collection of over 10.000 vinyl records, mainly Chicago House, Techno Detroit and Garage 80’s. Inspired by the sound of vintage synths and drum machines, he started to utilize them in his productions, debuting on Mathematics Records in 2009. Rufus is to date one of the most forward-thinking and innovative DJs to emerge from the Italian electronic music scene. His restless research into both old school and the freshest forms of dance music have inspired many Italian artists gravitating around the Bosconi Records circuit and the Florence scene. His DJ sets focus on open-minded positive music, funky vibes, downbeat, garage-house deep and jackin house. In the Tresor Floor basement, Joey Beltram knows our turntables like the back of his hand. Standing behind our decks in the earliest incarnation of the club, he played his now legendary tracks to wide-eyed ravers and clubbers that had never heard such incredible sounds before. Joining the Tresor Records family, Joey Beltram released album after album of gorgeous and timeless electronica, and continues to give us club sets that seem like heaven on earth. Simpy put: a techno master at work. Tresor Joey BeltramTresor Records/ NY Bosconi Records Globus Live: A Guy Called GeraldJuice Box, Bosconi Records/ UK |
