The Playground gives 2014 a spectacular send off with an outstanding line up! Leading lady Ellen Allien will be supported by LUKE SLATER and his PLANETARY ASSAULT SYSTEM guise, Playground regular A GUY CALLED GERALD and DASHA RUSH. Room 2 will be playing host to BAD LIFE Records with performances by RAVING GEORGE, AUTOKRATZ and D/R/U/G/S.

► ELLEN ALLIEN - DJ, musician, label manager, t-shirt designer and creative all-rounder. Born in Berlin, living and working in Berlin and Ibiza, one of the planet’s most dynamic party scenes, her artistic home stands for one thing above all: freedom. Since 1999 she has managed the label BPitch Control in Berlin, as well as the fashion range ellen allien. As a DJ she rocks clubs and festivals all around the world. She is a resident at DC10/ Ibiza, Nitsa/ Barcelona and Robert Johnson/ Offenbach as well as at major festivals such as Melt/ Germany and Name/ France and tours worldwide with BPitch Control events. For a long time now, Ellen Allien has been regarded as a fixed star in the electronic music galaxy. She is an extraordinary creature, a one-of-a-kind artist without whom Berlin’s vibrant electronic club landscape wouldn’t be the same.

► LUKE SLATER - PLANETARY ASSAULT SYSTEMS - Luke Slater's most influential pseudonym. A techno alchemist, Slater has always sought out the extreme often melding influences and styles into a furious and unique sound that has seen him acclaimed as one of the pioneers of British techno. His many and varied releases have seen him mature from an acid house inspired amateur to respected elder statesman of the global electronic empire. From launching that speculative 12" to putting out superb Detroit flecked 12"s on Djax as Clementine to fully-fledged artist albums on Peacefrog (Planetary Assault Systems, X-Tront) and GPR (7th Plain and Morganistic), Slater's trajectory through the early to mid nineties electronic music scene was at the very least staggeringly prolific and a lot of the time utterly majestic. From tough techno beats to beguiling symphonics, Slater's palette has grown ever broader and his musical skill has refined and evolved over time.

► A GUY CALLED GERALD - The gateway between Chicago House/ Detroit Techno and the Uk Dance explosion in the 80’s. The first, if not only, Acid House producer to have 2 instrumental dance tracks in the UK charts at the same time. His visions, stylistic versatility and open-mindness helped forge the development of global dance culture and helped to pioneer the Jungle/ Drum & Bass scene, with “blueprint” tracks like “28 Gun Badboy” and his critically acclaimed “Black Street Technology” album. A Guy Called Gerald is still touring worldwide, playing anywhere from 2 to the now legendary 14 hour sets - no DJ software, no gimmicks, just pure undiluted beats strictly for the dancefloor.

► DASHA RUSH - Began to DJ in her home country, Russia, at the age of 14. Opening herself to diverse style of electronic music from ambient to hardcore. After her move towards Europe in 1996, beside djing and working in fashion business, Dasha Rush began multi-artistic collaborations alongside artists and dancers. Developing sound installations and working with theatre/dance pieces. Dasha Rush has spent most of her time between Paris, London and Tokyo, exploring emotional and technological aspects of electronic music, as well as symbiosis and conflicts between sound and other artistic expressions. In 2004 she ventured back into Dancefloor music and launched her label ‘Full Panda.’ Nowadays Dasha Rush performs mostly Live acts and dj sets, as well as developing her labels, and producing other artists.

► RAVING GEORGE - An artist who loves the dark and melancholic sound of techno music. This young dj-talent has already been crowned the high priestess of Belgian dancehalls. Belgium loves Raving George and the memorable raves she threw at renowned festivals as I love Techno, Tomorrowland, Pukkelpop, Laundry Day and Studio Brussels’ Switch. She hypnotizes party people with her mesmerizing mix of electro and techno music and makes it impossible for any decent raver to stand still. She will take you by the hand into her domain of beats, synths and strange sounds and she’ll only let you go when she wants you to go completely crazy to one of her tracks.

► AUTOKRATZ - Known as one of the finest live electronic acts, London based duo Autokratz compose of David Cox and Russell Crank. They were previously signed to French electronic label Kitsuné Music and appeared frequently on ‘Kitsuné Maison.’ After having released a string of well received singles and remixes, for the likes of La Roux, Alex Gopher, Fischerspooner and Underworld, they released their debut mini album ‘Down & Out In Paris & London’ in 2008. The debut received critical acclaim across a wide variety of publications including the NME.

► D/R/U/G/S - Hailing from Manchester and London, electronic outfit D/R/U/G/S appear to be part of a slow yet highly welcomed re-emergence of ambient house music, creating serotonin-inducing textures that are as contemplative as they are danceable. D/R/U/G/S, for all their brackets and backslashes make an awesome racket. The duo deal in club music, but with an organic, spacey bent. Their tracks manage to be both languid and dynamic: songs that reach high but stretch out slowly.

A Guy Called Gerald (live)

Real music for real people.

Room 2: Wang Presents SMD (Warehouse Acid Set) + Electro Elvis + Jerome Hill

It’s been nearly 9 months since the launch of XOYO’s residency series and as a club we look back on an unforgettable run of parties. Our residents Eats Everything, The 2 Bears and now Jackmaster have all shown just how much dedication and passion it takes to deliver a prolific residency in present clubland. It’s a great honour to announce Simian Mobile Disco will become XOYO’s 4th quarter residents of 2014. As they release their brand new album Whorl, the internationally acclaimed duo will take the crown from Jackmaster this October. The pair will play 12 consecutive Saturdays across October, November and December bringing along an impressive roster of supporting guests to close XOYO’s inaugural year of the residency series.

With Simian this week is Matthew Dear, the emotive electronic pop artist, whose ambitious productions have earned him plaudits far and wide. Adding some grit to the proceedings are Boddika and Rebuild, a new project between A Guy Called Gerald and 808 State. After starting in Room 1, Simian will then be swapping headline duties for a special warehouse acid set in Room 2 for the rest of the night in association with legendary dance party WANG.

STUDIO/513 pres. A Guy Called Gerald (Manchester, UK)

14 ноября, при поддержке Red Bull Music Academy, впервые за всю историю клубного движения Урала мы встречаем парня, которого зовут Gerald!

A GUY CALLED GERALD !!!

Acid House.

Following the success of our last night at KOKO, The Playground is proud to present another spectacular line up! Leading the night’s proceedings will be LEFTFIELD- dj along with a rare live show from Juan Atkins + "Mad" Mike Banks Techno outfit MODEL 500! supported by a rare live performance from A GUY CALLED GERALD - Live In Session, DJ Hell, TROY PIERCE, iTAL tEK, Mixhell - Live + more TBA!

MODEL 500 - Juan Atkins, one of the Belleville Three, also noted as the Godfather of Techno and a key player in the development of the Detroit sound. At the Age of sixteen Atkins first heard electronic music, which proved to be a life changing experience. He bought his first analogue synthesizer, a Korg MS-10, and began recording with tape decks and a mixer for overdubs. He subsequently taught Derrick May to mix, and the pair started doing DJ sets together as Deep Space. Atkins later began recording as Model 500 in 1985 and founded The Metroplex label. His first single as Model 500, “No UFOs” was a hit in Detroit and Chicago, this was followed up by a string of hits that lead to him to become the “Godfather” of Techno. The current MODEL 500 lineup now includes Mark Taylor, Mike Banks and Milton Baldwin.

A GUY CALLED GERALD - The gateway between Chicago House/ Detroit Techno and the Uk Dance explosion in the 80’s.

DJ HELL - Helmut Geier is 46 years old and has DJ’d for more than half those years. In 1985, he was one of the first in Germany to DJ house music, back when Steve ‘Silk' Hurley made the first Chicago house tracks. In 1996 he founded International Deejay Gigolos Empire, his rebellious creative streak gave the label a punk DIY aesthetic. An open-ended techno imprint with a natural pop sensibility, Gigolo immediately stood out and attracted like-minded artists such as Fischerspooner, Vitalic, Miss Kittin & the Hacker, Tiga, even the Pet Shop Boys, Jeff Mills and Dopplereffekt. Through this label he put out lost classics by Chicago house legends Bobby Konders and DJ Pierre. He also re-released what's considered the first Detroit techno song, "Sharevari" by A Number of Names, and rekindled the career of new-wave heroes Tuxedomoon. DJ Hell’s success and nature towards the music scene has earnt him the title, "das gute gewiessen des deutschen techno," which means “The good soul of German Techno.”

TROY PIERCE - Troy Pierce was raised in Indiana, the neighbour to Chicago & Detroit, and developed a love of dance at an early age. This passion grew with him and eventually he became a pillar of the modern Techno community. The Troy Pierce sound is one which has constantly veered from dense, layered and abstract to stripped down, acid infused and pulsing. His sonic palette is one that draws on a wide array of influences and reaches far outside the confines of the studio and into another world entirely. Fusing techno with minimalism, darkness with light and heaviness with rhythm, this American has never been afraid to experiment in the outer regions of his vast musical universe. Troy Pierce’s success has lead him to host many world tours, live shows, produce countless albums & singles under various aliases and as part of more than one studio collective.

iTALtEK - Alan Myson, 25 year old producer, DJ and label owner from Brighton. Since signing to the legendary Planet Mu label in 2007 with the hard industrial infused dubstep of “Blood Line EP” he has progressed to become a exciting and unique voice in the world of electronic music. Ital Tek has carved his own niche in the broad spectrum of bass music by creating evocative melody rich yet dancefloor friendly electronic music with references to classic Electronica, Hip Hop and Techno blended masterfully to create his own style of hard hitting and melodic bass music. Through Planet Mu, Myson has released numerous EPs and two full length albums, 2008’s Cyclical and 2010’s Midnight Colour to critical acclaim, with supporting DJ mixes on Mary Anne Hobbs’ BBC Radio 1 show. She also asked Ital Tek to write an exclusive track as the opener to her 2008 Evangeline compilation showcasing the best of the dubstep and bass music scene.

MIXHELL - Comprising of Iggor Cavalera (drummer of Brazilian super band Sepultura), his wife Laima Leyton (DJ & Producer) and Max Blum (Bass player). Mixhell is a new and exciting collaboration which aims to fuse together the best and most uplifting elements of the rock and electronica scenes to create a “Rock-tronica” effect. Driven by an overwhelming presence of an organic, intuitive and complimentary musical sound, often associated with the electronic music language, Mixhell have unleashed the project from the studio onto the stage creating an explosive live act. By including an MPC Sampler into their DJ Sets, they can fully explore the inner depth of their music whilst delving into the depths of Electroclash, Hip Hop, Cyber Punk and dark Rock ‚n‘ Roll and unleashing it on an underground dance community. Their sound is very beat oriented and gives the feeling, almost, of having a pulse. Its rich in influences and aims to reignite the passion for disco-punk and old school Hip Hop, by utilising their effectiveness as background samples on the dancefloor, whilst moving the genres forward into a more contemporary setting with a New Age Rock element. Iggor and Laima’s blend of old and new makes it a perfect fit for the dancefloor as the combination of Mpc’s samplers, CDJs, mixers, synths and drum machines create an extremely versatile and engaging experience. Add to this the implementation of a live aspect with Iggor on a drumkit and the whole show goes to another level.

10 October at 22:30 to 11 October at 03:30

The Reading Rooms
Blackscroft, DD4 6AT Dundee

At last…A Guy Called Gerald is coming to play in Dundee!!!

A Night With and the Festival of House join forces to bring a bonafide UK dance legend to do his thing down the one and only Reading Rooms.

Let's go way back…Gerald grew up around Manchester and was influenced by many genres of black dance music, but especially the electrofunk and electro sounds that emerged in the city during the early to mid 1980s.

However it was the Acid House explosion at the end of that decade that signalled that A Guy Called Gerald's time had truly come. An early pioneer in the UK dance scene that grew out of the influential sounds being exported over from New York, Chicago and Detroit, he produced a number`of massive releases for the Warp label such as the all time classic Voodoo Ray. He was also a member of seminal UK dance act 808 State.

So to cut a long story short, this man is basically personally responsible for many of what became the anthems of UK dance music and is without question a dance music legend.

As such Gerald has been on the short list of top quality acts pencilled in for the A Night With series of events from the very start. But now thanks to a collaboration between A Night With, The Rhumba Club and The Reading Rooms, this event is set to be the launch party of this year's Festival of House. And who could possibly be better to kick off an event like this than A Guy Called Gerald making his debut in the city?

This is a MASSIVE night ahead and history is in the making down the Reading Rooms where many of this city's legendary dance music nights have unfolded. So grab a ticket NOW and book your place on the dance floor for a night you will never forget!!!

Dicky Trisco (Autodisco) & Is Kill (Book Club) will be warming things up on the night behind the wheels of steel.

£12 advance tickets are available from Grouchos, Manifesto and seetickets.com.

Modern Jam Movement

And more..

For its first edition in London, Influence presents a pioneer of electronic music in the UK: Gerald is both one of the initiators of acid house music as well as one of the most respected artists worldwide in a genre that is exclusive to him. It’s only in a symbolic place for spiritual groove that such performance could be held, and in this outlook the church of St John of Hackney was the perfect venue to host the event.

Seeking its spiritual groove, between occult vibrations & rumbling noise, Influence finds refuge in the church of St John Hackney.

A Guy Called Gerald

Manchester born and Berlin based electronic musician, Gerald Simpson’s life can be understood through his early influences. His Jamaican heritage gave him a passion for the battles parties in Man- chester while his adopted home of Berlin was industrial and raw. This led to his love for the machines which allowed him to master his craft.

Founding member of 808 State, Gerald made his name in 1988 with Voodoo Ray. His first solo LP celebrates the dawn of a rave new world that reached England and the world alongside electronic music. In this genre, Gerald is a classicist. If you ask him ‘did you create the jungle style?’ he would respond that he is a hybrid mix of reggae, funk and techno. Though he is acclaimed for the birth of acid house, he would tell you it wouldn’t exist without the guys from Detroit.

He even remains humble with the choice of his stage name. Some say his name came from the first radio show broadcasting of Voodoo Ray. As the radio host could not recall the name of the artist he finally announced: "Voodoo Ray by A Guy Called Gerald”. If Gerald did not create European techno, he is surely one of the initiators. If he doesn’t want to de defined by a specific musical category it’s purely because Gerald is well aware that his music has no equal - It’s just ‘A Guy Called Gerald’.

Danton Eeprom :

French born and a London based producer, Danton’s deep roots in modern electronic music surely recall the name of Oscar Wilde in litera- ture. Danton’s perfectionism and aesthetic vision has built his unique energy with influences ranging from pop music to rock and new wave. His two albums Yes Is More in 2009 & If Looks Could Kill both released on Infiné along with about fifteen EPs gained him much merited noto- riety. We say he’s a techno dandy never far away from blasphemes.

This year we celebrate the 10-year anniversary of our beloved event - Kiketi Open Air! Being the first electronic music open air event in the republic of Georgia, Kiketi has hosted amazing Georgian and foreign electronic music artists for these 10 years.
Not far away from Tbilisi, in the heart of nature, on the Kiketi hill surrounded by picturesque forests, in July, every year we celebrate the music.

The event has become a favorite experience for all our guests and this year, two of them are coming back to Georgia to play our anniversary event. San Proper (Rush Hour, Perlon) and Dandy Jack and the Metronome Allstars (Ruta5, Perlon) are welcome back and very much awaited! In addition, this year, we will enjoy the performance of A Guy Called Gerald, who needs no introduction! We are very much looking forward to the live-set by D (Proper's Cult) from Amsterdam!

Kiketi has always been a platform for local musicians and this year our Georgian line-up reflects the developments in the electronic music scene of Georgia and features many artists, both the ones who will be playing Kiketi for the first time and those, who have been playing the event for years.
Georgian Vjs Masterskey and Mozgovoi will offer an amazing visual experience.

We are very excited, that we are getting 10 years old! Come and celebrate with us!

If you thought you experienced the versatility & craziness of the Berlin club scene, diving in its boiling Techno & House culture and knowing all of its hidden secrets, think twice.
Many of you have probably heard that House Music is a feeling but how many of you have been truly hijacked. It has been exactly one year now that Hijackin’ keep buzzing with its bi-monthly session. A celebration of the inception of House Music when its strong musical backbone was holding it together, tainted of deep Soul, Funk & Disco influences.

Jack said House Music is an universal language, spoken and understood by all. Raw & honest grooves delivered by international disciples and local devotees echoing soundscapes of Chicago, Detroit, London or Paris. Jack spoiled you at every party with a savant mixture of highly respected old schoolers & undeniable young talents. And Jack is the one who gives you the power to jack your body once again.

Sweat drops will peel the ceiling of the Butzke thanks to the ones that saw it all for the last 2 decades: the Frenchitude of the unveiled classics by Jeremy Underground Paris, the British father of Voodoo Ray, A Guy Called Gerald or the Belgian funkiness of the vinyl collection of Room With A View's Dairmount. And who will give you the power to do the snake and walk your body? The heritage, the new deal, the youngblood : Melbourne's Francis Inferno Orchestra, Warsaw's SLG, London's Wbeeza & Malaga's Carlo will all preach the Holy Groove. Without forgetting the Berlin funkateers: Get Deep's Charlie Smooth & Xing, the Geradehaus Crew and the inseparable Local Talkers Oliver Gehrmann, Xaver Hirsch & Tim Vitá.

Let there be House, Happy Birthday little Jackers!

DJ AFX
Richard James aka The Aphex Twin should need no introduction, he performs an ultra rare set for us
all way can say is ‘Come on you cunts, let’s have some aphex acid”

REBUILD (A Guy Called Gerald / Graham Massey 808 State)
Two genuine UK acid house legends reunite for an exclusive live hardware acid jam, without a laptop in sight…
Rebuild was originally a one off exclusive performance for WANG way back in 2007, but was just soo good we had to do it again (and again), but with 3 performances in 7 years they can hardly be described as prolific!
Witness two masters in the art of acid demonstrate just how it’s supposed to be done

ELECTRO ELVIS (WANG)
WANG co-founder and resident DJ, pushes things forward once more with a next generation AVDJ live set

JEROME HILL
Don’t Records head honcho and honorary ‘WANG DJ Assault Squad’ member, Jerome tears it up old-school style on the wheels of steel. One of the world’s most devastating DJ technicians, his cutting’ and scratchin’ of techno beats always gets the crowd rocking

CHARLIE KANE
Charlie was born into the heart of the Spiral Tribe sound system where he developed not only a passion for production, waveforms and the hypnotic effect of flashing LED’s but an intuitive understanding of live performance.

MAX VOLUME
Born in Berlin on the road with Spiral Tribe, Max Volume attended his first rave at 2 weeks old. Immersed within dance music culture from his first breath, he rapidly honed his musical instincts as a teenager and developed a natural flair for performance and production alike.

In his nine albums that span a 25-year career, A Guy Called Gerald has built a genre busting body of work. The Berlin-based, Manchester-born electronic music pioneer is an international name that has defined genres. One of the founding members of 808 State, Simpson kick started the UK’s acid house frenzy with his ’88 classic ‘Voodoo Ray’ and 808 State's 'Pacific State' – gatecrashing the charts in the process – and then quietly went on to lay down the blueprint for Jungle / Drum n bass. Although his remixes are relatively enviable including the likes of David Bowie, Cabaret Voltaire, Black Uhuru, Finley Quaye, Lamb, Tricky, D:Note and The Stone Roses’ “Fools Gold”, it is Gerald’s own productions, his consistent innovation and excellence and refusal to plough anyone’s furrow but his own which has marked him out, ever since the early days. He’s collaborated with top artists, from Frankie Knuckles and Flora Purim to Derrick May and Herbie Hancock.

In 2014 he continues touring worldwide with his unique live sound. He solidly booked worldwide including dates at Sonar and James Lavelle curated Meltdown Festival alongside Neneh Cherry, Nick Cave and ESG.

From 3pm - 9pm we will take over the beautiful Kazimier Gardens with Session Victim performing live alongside Romare and Unkwn. We have also selected the finest local sunshine selectors, with No Fakin, Bolts and Andrew Hill also Djing on the Bandstand.

As the darkness draws in, we will take a small break and prepare The Kazimier for our Clubshow party to take place from 10pm-4am. We will be announcing our very special line up for the Main Room very soon, though for now we are delighted to share that Church will be hosting the Rat Alley, with their residents Seb Wildblood and Apes Djing back 2 back for 3 hours. Newcastle's Audio Asylum and Irishman Chris Hanna fill up the Rat Alley Line Up.

A GUY CALLED GERALD
Where do you start with A Guy Called Gerald? A hidden gem, the gateway between Chicago house / Detroit Techno and the UK dance music explosion in the late 80s. He is one of a few special producers who entered dance music in the jacking zone. He is the first UK acid house producer and probably the first producer to have two instrumental dance tracks in the UK charts at the same. He formed 808 State with a drum machine, a 303, 2 Roland SH101s and 2 other humans. His collaborations stem from Frankie Knuckles, Goldie, Finley Quaye and Derrick May through to Herbie Hancock, remixed for David Bowie, Lamb, Stone Roses, Black Uhuru, Can, Tricky, Roman Fluegel and The Orb and toured with New Order, Tricky and Bebel Gilberto.
When the history of postmodern dance music is written he is ubiquitous: his visions, his stylistic versatility and open mindedness had a huge influence on the development of global dance culture. Very early on, he experimented with acid house and helped pioneer the style that was later called jungle and drum'n'bass. Fiercely independent he's preparing himself for a string of new releases, the launch of his online shop and touring worldwide.
The Manchester scene in the late 80s radiated from the Hacienda. It was a place which grew to be a breeding ground for the likes of Laurent Garnier and Chemical Brothers and in the Summer of Love the Hacienda had a theme tune called Voodoo Ray. It was A Guy Called Gerald's first release in 1988 and became a seminal classic that put British house music
firmly on the map. As part of 808 State’s first incarnation he co-produced another Hacienda classic, Pacific State. He soon decided to concentrate on his solo project and toured worldwide (and with a quarter of a ton of equipment!) performing live.
In the early 90s he launched his own label Juice Box and released a series of 12"s that were the blueprint to what would become jungle. In 1992 he compiled these releases into the proto jungle classic "28 Gun Bad Boy" album. In 1995 he followed up with the definitive "Black Secret Technology" to critical acclaim. Black Secret Technology featured Finley's Rainbow with vocals by Finley Quaye and a collaboration with Goldie. Finley's Rainbow featured Finley Quaye who later re-released the tune on his debut album. In 2005 Knowledge Magazine ranked "28 Gun Bad Boy" EP was as the No. 1 jungle single of all time. His sound was an inspiration to many - Goldie, LTJ Bukem and DJ Krust have all stated his influence.
But never wanting to be stereotyped into any particular style of music his sound continued to develop. In 2000 he signed with !K7 Records and released "Essence" with guest vocals from singer/songwriter Wendy Page, Lady Kier and Finley Quaye. In 2005 the down tempo "To All Things What They Need". In 2005 he launched his Sugoi and Protechson labels. His latest album "Proto Acid / The Berlin Sessions", released on Berlin's Laboratory Instinct, is an infectious 71 minute continuous mix recorded live.
2008 marks 20 years of A Guy Called Gerald in dance music and to celebrate a definitive collection of A Guy Called Gerald’s back catalogue is planned for release featuring rare and unreleased tracks and remixes. In July a remaster of 1995’s jungle classic “Black Secret Technology” was reissued. And in August “In Ya Head feat. Mia” came out on Berlin’s favourite Perlon Records.
He continues to tour bringing his studio into the clubs worldwide playing anywhere from 2 to now legendary 14 hour LIVE sets – no DJ software, no gimmicks, just raw, pure, undiluted AGCG riddums strictly for the dancefloor.

SYNDICATE presents A GUY CALLED GERALD

4 May - 5 May
4 May at 15:00 to 5 May at 01:00

99 Hanover Street Bar, EH21DJ Edinburgh, United Kingdom

On May 4th we are very very excited to welcome living legend A GUY CALLED GERALD to 99 Hanover Street.

Gerald Simpson is best known for his early work during the Acid House scene in Manchester during the late 1980's and his masterpiece ''VOODOO RAY''.

He absorbed Jazz Fusion in such clubs as Legends in Manchester in the early 80's which inspired him to study contemporary dance. Around the time of 1983 with electro booming and early B-BOY and Hip Hop culture making its way across the pond from the U.S. he left dance college to immerse himself in electronic music. The sound around this time was coming from Detroit and Chicago from producers such as Kevin Saunderson, Juan Atkins and Derrick May and was being played on Piccadilly Radio and being imported directly into Manchester's record shops.

Inspired, Simpson began experimenting with tape editing and drum machines and the regular jams in the attic of his house led to forming the Scratchbeat Masters. Using cut up beats, samples and turntables they would challenge other bands and their sound systems. They released a 12" single called "Wax On The Melt", a collaboration between a number of crews and Graham Massey and Martin Price together with whom he would later form 808 State. Their first album, Newbuild, was released in 1988, but he soon left the group to concentrate on his solo work.

The result of this decision was ''VOODOO RAY'' first played in the legendary Hacienda in 1988, then underground nightclubs before entering the U.K. Singles Chart a year later, reaching number 12 and was also the best selling independently released single of that year on RHAM! RECORDS.

Also on the day we have drafted in some local DJ's such as Gary Mac, Kev Wright, Huggy, Wilson and Battle Of The Zoo to join Syndicate residents Miller and Molecular.

We expect to hit capacity for this one so table reservations are being taken as of now, call 0131 225 8200,otherwise we are operating a first come first serve basis until we cant fit anyone else in!.

50% off drinks with The Syndicate card as always.

Get Down To Get Down.

FABIAN TOMBERS.LIVE - Berlin
A Guy Called Gerald - Manchester / Berlin
Sammy Dee - Berlin

Self-titled “musical self-experiment with strong, abstract features”, Fabian Tombers newest work, the “Orph” EP, features completely new tonal approaches. With this release, the 21-year old Berliner-by-choice did not only redefine himself, but also his self-created “Avantpop” genre and his new EP clearly differs from his other releases. Thanks to a dark ambience, distortions, pitch-shiftings of vocals and every once in a while strong drums you get taken away into a new musical atmosphere that leaves you dreaming. The new EP also features Pop-orientated experiments, which were supported by the talented and by now unknown singer Morgane Hinz. With 8 Tracks and a total length of 36 minutes, the new EP offers, besides House-Grooves, distorted drone-sounds and strong presence of synthesizers, a completely new-sounding release, which will appeal not only to confirmed Techno-listeners, but also to supporters of the “Majestic-Casual-era”.

„What they really wanna play“

At a normal Club Night the DJs are trying to match their sets with the party and the crowd. Nothing to say against it...been there, done that.
But what, if we give experienced artists the possibility to do what they want and play what they want?

For this special night we have two legends, who will be taking you on a musical journey. Going deep in their repertoire, Elbee Bad & A Guy Called Gerald are gonna play the music that they love and which has been influencing them in their long career.

We don´t know what to expect...but we are really curious!

About the artists:

Gerald:

A Guy Called Gerald is 25+ years of dance music incarnate. From “Voodoo Ray” in 1988 to “Tronic Jazz” released on Germany’s respected Laboratory Instinct label in 2010, this man is a self-written bible of dance music.

He is one of a few special producers who entered dance when it was jackin’ and has never let up. He was the first UK acid house producer and achieved the rare feat of having not one but two instrumental dance tracks in the UK charts at the same time. He formed 808 State with a drum machine, a 303, 2 Roland SH101s and two other humans.

Over the course of his career Gerald has collaborated with everyone from Frankie Knuckles and Goldie through to Derrick May and Herbie Hancock. His remix credits are equally impressive with reworks in his back catalogue for David Bowie, Lamb, Stone Roses, Can, Tricky and Roman Flügel as well as having toured with the likes of New Order and Bebel Gilberto.

Elbee Bad:

Elbee Bad started his musician career over 20 years ago. Growing up in a time when music was alive and filled with talent and showmanship, this was instilled in him, and is still one of his strongest points today.

As a DJ and MC, Elbee Bad has dazzled crowds around the world mixing and remixing live on his new weapons of choice: the turntables, mixer and microphone.

Live, Elbee switches between the turntables and the mic, singing, rapping and engaging an always enthusiastic audience.

Elbee Bad has been keeping crowds on their toes by playing a variety of new and unfamiliar sounds and over the course of the years gained the nickname of the Prince of Dance Music. With a background in radio and television broadcasting, Elbee has worked for some of the most prominent radio stations in New-York (WBLS and WGLI, hosting shows ranging from hip-hop to the showcasing of young local talent) and after moving to the other side of the Atlantic, Elbee entertained Berliners for four years on Kiss FM with his bi-weekly live five hour music show Wow What’s That!, playing alongside the likes of electronic music legends DJ Hell and Laurent Garnier.

His message was (and still is) music, love and laughter, and his releases have graced the likes of BAD’S LABEL, LARHON RECORDS, RUSH HOUR, NU GROOVE, GIGOLO, LASER GUN, COMPOST, SOMA, BCC BERLIN, CAFE DEL MAR as well as many others.

★ THE PARTY ★

On 22 March 2014, krankbrother are throwing an intimate warehouse party, with an exciting collection of live and DJ acts, all of whom are making their krankbrother debuts. These 3 artists have all been long term booking targets of krankbrother, and we're delighted to bring them together under one roof. As usual, these artists will be given the audio and visual production back-up that they deserve - corner stacked Funktion One sound, and a unique, one off visual mapping display.

★ THE VENUE ★

The party will be held at one of our favourite warehouse spaces - the exact venue will be announced the week of the event once the temporary licence has been confirmed. It's a firm favourite and has been one of our most popular venues over the years. Get hyped!

★ THE LINEUP ★

Firstly, Lee Burridge makes a rare London DJ appearance. Over the past decade, he has made an indelible mark on the international scene with his free flowing track selection and serious party vibes. He's a DJ that effortlessly gets in synch with his audience, and his epic sunrise sets at Burning Man and beyond have become the stuff of legend. We've watched him play several times over the years - and the journey he takes you on is enough to send a shiver up the spine!

Secondly, legendary producer A Guy Called Gerald brings his live set to krankbrother. He has been rocking dance floors for two decades, and is still one of the most musically gifted artists on our scene. If you need to know more, just listen to this MIND BLOWING recent set for Boileroom, and expect more of the same at krankbrother. It's on REPEAT in the krankbrother office! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhr0_fadXxY

San Soda will get things started. For pure track selection, there aren't many more in form DJs working today. A vinyl only DJ - he's one of those DJs whose record box you'd very much like to steal! He has had some very strong releases in 2013 as well, only adding to the allure of a chance to watch the man up, close and personal.

We are very pleased to announce the start of the Underland season, beginning with a series of bespoke events combining documentaries, performances and guest speakers. Each event provides an incite into the genres and scenes which have been instrumental in shaping the UK’s dance music scene.

The first SOUND & MOTION event will be paying homage to the Acid House scene, featuring a screening of High On Hope & a DJ set A Guy Called Gerald.

The screening of the documentary will take place early in the evening, with the club area of Underland opening its doors later in the evening for the second half of the event featuring support from DJ Vince Vega / Nicky MC Tunes Lockett / Dubz / G.O.T Music

High On Hope -
This documentary is a testament to what happened when Acid House arrived from Chicago to Northern England. An accomplished look at how Thatcher’s youth, facing a future with no jobs sense or community used the derelict warehouses of Britain’s old industrial to forge a new sense of togetherness based around music. The documentary will be followed by talks from both the director and the cast.

MEMORY BOX 1ST BIRTHDAY
A History of Acid House

A GUY CALLED GERALD (DJ SET) // 808 STATE SOUNDSYSTEM
SAYTEK (LIVE) // ROBIN BALL

SATURDAY 25TH JANUARY @ PLAN B, BRIXTON
22:00 – 05:00

TICKETS FROM https://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?542440

On Saturday 25th January 2014, Memory Box turns 1 year young with celebrations coming from legendary club culture heroes A Guy Called Gerald and 808 State! In its inaugural year, Memory Box has captured and celebrated defining moments in the last few decades of electronic music. Delving deep into its rich history, Memory Box trawls the archives to produce a broad selection of sonic memoirs.

Heading to Plan B in Brixton for the first birthday, Memory Box celebrates one of the most acknowledged sub-genres of our generation, Acid House. With one of the most iconic names in dance music, A Guy Called Gerald on the bill with old band mates and revolutionaries from the late 80’s 808 State Soundsystem, both digging through their crates to play specially crafted sets showcasing the defining movement known as Acid House. One of the most exciting UK electronic artists of recent time, Saytek will bridge the gap between old and new with a special Memory Box live show of oldskool Detroit, Chicago and acid inspired material. While Memory Box creator Robin Ball lights the birthday candles with a warm up of acid-tinged electronica.

As A Guy Called Gerald muses: "This will be my journey of music starting with the drum. There will be one minute of silence before the show so I can contact my ancestors. I'll be taking you from the jungles of Africa, to the music of slavery, to the music of Jamaica, to the automated cold grey music of the industrial era. I'm going to take you from the soul to the coal."

Previous explorations through the Memory Box have heard Tom Middleton giving a history class on the Roland 808, Altern-8’s Mark Archer playing his warehouse rave classics, Rennie Pilgrem playing an old skool breaks set, Justin Robertson on a classic acid house tip, and Jerome Hill spinning old skool techno. Upcoming parties include Shades of Rhythm hosting the Memory Box Christmas Party and February’s party dives deep into a History of Bass with Pinch, Plastician and Altern-8.

Memory Box creator Robin Ball says “A Guy Called Gerald is the perfect guest for our 1st birthday. He encapsulates everything Memory Box parties are about. Steeped in electronic music history and yet still breaking down musical boundaries, 'Voodoo Ray' has become the Memory Box anthem. Whether its a night of straight up retro fun at a Memory Box Social or a serious musical Memory Box moment, that track always grips the dance floor then makes it explode! And on a personal tip Gerald's 'Emotion Electric' is one of my all time favourites! It melts my soul.”

As an early birthday gift, 808 State gave us their top 10 acid house tracks to wet our whistles (no rave pun intended).

808 State - Top 10
Corporation Of One – ‘The Real Life’
Liaisons D – ‘Future’
Unique 3 – ‘The Theme’
Joey Beltram – ‘Energy Flash’
Da Posse – ‘Strings’
Fast Eddie – ‘Can U Dance’
Rhythim Is Rhythim – ‘Strings Of Life’
Sueño Latino – ‘Sueño Latino’
Charles B – ‘Lack Of Love’
Slam – ‘Positive Education’

A GUY CALLED GERALD

An iconic name in dance music, A Guy Called Gerald stands out for consistent innovation, excellence and refusal to compromise. A Guy Called Gerald kick started Europe’s acid house frenzy with his ’88 classic ‘Voodoo Ray’ and 'Pacific State' (as part of 808 State) and went on to lay down the blueprint for jungle / drum n bass. Nine albums and 25 years of independence later, he continues to push the boundaries of electronic dance music touring worldwide bringing his "true school" flavour to a world overloaded with pop pap.

Although his remixes are relatively enviable including the likes of David Bowie, Cabaret Voltaire, Black Uhuru, Finley Quaye, Lamb, Tricky and The Stone Roses, it is Gerald’s own productions and refusal to plough anyone’s furrow but his own which has marked him out. A Guy Called Gerald is responsible for the birth of British dance music as you know it today and continues to explore what is possible in the studio.

UK club culture has many people to thank for transforming the imported sound of America into the biggest youth movement my generation has experienced, but nobody else has redefined it so much with the character and soul of Britishness, creating music for both the feet and the head, and indelibly altering our cultural landscape." Joe Roberts, DJ Magazine

https://www.guycalledgerald.com/

808 STATE SOUNDSYSTEM (808 State *DJ* Set)

The story of 808 State defines an era of electronic dance music and sets a blueprint of possibilities for future generations. As the NME observed “808 State revolutionised a whole genre of music in the late-80s, inspiring Underworld, Orbital and the Chemical Brothers in the process."

Formed in Manchester in 1988 by Graham Massey, Martin Price and Gerald Simpson, 808 State's first album – Newbuild - is now regarded as a milestone in UK electronica.

Quadrastate followed, including Pacific State, becoming an end-of-night anthem at the Haçienda and breaking out of the dance underground when it was picked up by daytime BBC Radio 1. The band pushed against dance-celebrity culture with intentionally minimalist record sleeves and a reluctance to self-promote. During this time Gerald recorded his own hit Voodoo Ray and decided to pursue his own career as A Guy Called Gerald. He was replaced by the 808 State DJs, Andrew Barker and Darren Partington.

In 1989 Paul Morley signed the band to the ZTT label, and the first fruit of this partnership, the albumNinety, was awarded 10 out of 10 by the NME. The Guardian declared that with this record, "808 State mapped out the future of club music, utilising techno, ambient and rock..."
Between Ninety and it's follow-up, ex:el, 808 State delivered two of the most brutal and absorbing instrumentals ever to enter the UK top ten: Cübik, with its squalling abstract guitar and über-riffs, followed quickly by In Yer Face.

In 1991 they released their biggest selling album ex:el, drafting in guests such as Björk and Bernard Sumner from New Order, as well as producing MC Tunes' album The North At Its Heights. At the peak of chart success and the 'Madchester' era, 808 celebrated with a massive hometown gig filling the G-Mex stadium.

Signing in the USA to influential hip-hop label Tommy Boy, they collaborated with the likes of Quincy Jones, David Bowie and Afrika Bambaataa. With the 1993 album Gorgeous, they delivered their most successful album in the States, acquiring a large popularity on the college radio station scene. Around this time, Martin Price had decided to leave the band.
Following the success of Gorgeous, 808 State took their global touring experience into the studio recording the 1996 album Don Solaris - exploring a more organic post rave sound. After the release of their first greatest hits package 808:88:98, they delivered further explorations on the Outpost Transmission album in 2002.

In the following years the band's entire back catalogue was re-issued in expanded form, by ZTT, the Aphex Twin's Rephlex label and UMAA in Japan. Rephlex also released Prebuild, a collection of very early Acid House recordings, pre Newbuild era.

SAYTEK

As one of the UK's most exciting acts, Saytek has carved out a unique position for himself over the last few years. Having built a reputation for innovative, improvised hardware heavy live sets that span the house and techno spectrum he is now widely regarded as one of the nation's very best live performers. Saytek built his name at one of London's most legendary contemporary clubs, The End, alongside regular stints with Ibiza's seminal Zoo Project. A solid reputation means Saytek now has a constant tour schedule and an ever growing list of live performances, which includes gigs at many of the world's best-known and most respected clubs including fabric in London and Space in Ibiza. In the last year alone he's had releases with some of the industry's most respected labels such as My Favorite Robot, Soma, Bedrock ,Monique Musique, Lucid Flow, Love Not Money and Wiggle to name but a few. Keen supporters of his music include Carl Cox, Seth Troxler, Richie Hawtin, Luciano, DannyTenaglia, John Digweed, Steve Lawler, Claude Von Stroke, DJ Sneak, Dubfire, Derrick May, Laurent Garnier and Nic Fanciulli. On top of his regular flow of singles and EPs, Saytek's series of live albums, initially released via Zoo's own label and, more recently, through his own Cubism imprint have further bolstered his reputation for innovative projects. The most recent, Live On Cubism II, is a diverse yet cohesive composition which combines flecks of acid with tough analogue Detroit flavours and irresistible bumping Chicago grooves. It picked up the Album Of The Month accolade in dance music bible Mixmag, as well as receiving plaudits from across the board, much like his previous efforts.
