DetailsFrom Google Groups: "I just thought I would inform you of a rather cool gig happening this Wednesday (short notice - sorry, I forgot) @ Subterania in Notting Hill (LONDON). The name of the night is 'Still I Rise' and it's in aid of Body + Soul, an AIDS charity for women and children. The wicked line-up, which includes a mixture of live and DJ'd drum + bass is as follows: 4 HERO + THE REINFORCED CREW And lots more people who I can't remember/don't know yet... The reason I know about the gig is that I'm playing the violin with the DRUM FM crew, so if anyone decides to come along, then don't be scared to come and say 'hi', or anything else you feel like saying. I'm not scary, I'll be the small girl with the big trainers and the wispy hair... love Emmma xxxxxx" Listed in NME - 22nd Novvember 1997. |

DetailsSpring Heel Jack with A Guy Called Gerald, at the Trocadero (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), 10th and Arch Streets, at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Tickets: $10. Phone: 215-922-6888. From MyCityPaper: Spring Heel Jack Spring Heel Jack's Ashley Wales and John Coxon are way ahead of the curve. At a moment when new U2 and Bowie releases are rushing to embrace the sound of the electronic, these two Londoners are already subverting it. On their album 68 Million Shades, Wales and Coxon upend drum and bass standards, replacing the genre's familiar low-end heaviness with a symphonic array of strings, congas and horns. And though the group is only two guys and some samplers, expect Spring Heel Jack to put on quite a live show — substituting Coxon's live guitar for studio effects, and highlighting Coxon's turntable wizardry. Like-minded hardstepper A Guy called Gerald will open the night with his distinctive brand of freeform breakbeat jazz. The future is now. Wed., March 19, Trocadero, 10th & Arch Sts., 922-LIVE. |

021 / 923 65 93. |

DetailsSupporting Tricky. From Metroactive (January 30-February 5, 1997 issue of Metro, Silicon Valley's Weekly Newspaper): "Opener Jeru Tha Damaja was off the tour. His sole replacement was a DJ who spun hip-hop and then later, house and jungle beats. At 10:20pm, the lights lowered and a Bowie-sounding track I had never heard ("I danced myself out of the room") was followed by a cut off of Snoop Doggy Dogg's latest album. Tricky, trailed by a bassist, keyboardist, guitarist, drummer and Martina, entered to a whoop of anticipation." |

DetailsSupporting Tricky (Jeru the Damaja was dropped from the tour). (Presumably didn't take place as he was playing in London that night - unless he flew by Concorde!) Reviewed in the Arizona Daily Wildcat on 30th January 1997: "Opening act Jeru the Damaja dropped off the tour a few shows back, so inside the club, there's only one thing to wait for. When the lights go down, Tricky and his band silently take the stage." (Seems to suggest that Gerald didn't appear?) Although this review (from the Phoenix New Times on 30th January 1997) suggests he did!: "Dozens turned away at the door chilled in the concrete mini-park of Hayden Square, checking out A Guy Called Gerald spin hip-hop beats through the open club doors and hungrily eying the will-call line for anyone with a connection that might get them inside. " |
21 January: Tricky Tour, Fox Theater, Boulder, Colorado, USA |
DetailsSupporting Tricky Reviewed in Westword (30th January 1997) : "Then, after appearing with Tricky in New York City, lead-off act Jeru the Damaja, profiled in last week's issue, vanished from the bill; speaking in Addicted to Noise, an on-line publication, Tricky chalked up his departure to "politics." Whatever the actual reason, the throng at the Fox (a mixture of Boulder-y intellectuals, local trendsetters and white hip-hop kids clad in rag-tag fashions cribbed from Yo! MTV Raps) went from looking forward to the concert opener to having none at all. Prior to the show's start, a DJ spun tracks by the Wu Tang Clan and Snoop Doggy Dogg--music that's estimable but painfully obvious. Listening to it, one couldn't help but fear that Tricky, whose brilliant recordings are tangled and ornate, would wind up doing karaoke versions of his best pieces a la far too many of his rap peers." 14 January: Tricky Tour, Avalon, Boston, Massachusetts, USA |
DetailsSupporting Tricky Review from Boston Globe (16 January 1997): "Say hello to the 28-year-old trip-hop star Tricky who just about executed that maneuver before a packed house at Avalon. Here's the skinny: Opening act Jeru the Damaja was booted off the bill after a recent New York show, leaving DJ A Guy Called Gerald and Tricky to fill all the hours. Prior to the set, the mercurial Brit informed (warned?) his Avalon hosts that his show could range anywhere from 45 minutes to three hours. We beat feet at the two-hour mark to make a prior engagement, and we did not fear we missed the Second Coming. As we exited, Tricky was mired in a lazy, near-ambient groove that one stagehand aptly termed "just like the Grateful Dead with way more bass." " |
12 January: Tricky Tour, Irving Plaza, Manhatten, New York City, USA |
DetailsSupporting Tricky and Jeru the Damaja Reviewed in the New York Times: "Jeru the Damaja, a rapper from Brooklyn, shared the bill, condensing his songs to fit a short time slot." (which indicates that Jeru the Damaja appeared at the 2nd Irving Plaza gig - this may have been his final gig on the Tricky tour? - see Boston gig - above) |
