17 Dec: Pirates Of The Underground V, Melbourne, Australia |
DetailsPirates Of The Underground V feat A Guy Called Gerald & Mark Antona at Pirate Boat Line-up / Promoter / Subsonic Music PIRATES OF THE UNDERGROUND V feat... A Guy Called Gerald, Marc Antona & Subsonic Music Festival DJs ... There's boat parties, and then there's boat parties, and then there's this: from the bowels of Davy Jones's Locker, the 5th annual Pirates of the Underground Cruise returns on Saturday December 17 with a lineup laden with international heavyweights. Prepare for an afternoon of psychedelic techno mayhem on the high seas, where your (compulsory) pirate costume is but the first step as we forget reality and descend deep into Davey Jones’ locker and round off the year in still in typically extravagant Subsonic style in the summer sunshine on Sydney harbour… Leading the global armada we have UK veteran A GUY CALLED GERALD, a chap who has collaborated with the likes of Derrick May and Frankie Knuckles over the course of his 25-year career who demonstrated he has not lost any of his magic with an inspired set on Saturday night at the Subsonic Music Festival. He will be flanked by Frenchman MARC ANTONA, who recently released his debut full-length album, Rules Of Madness, through his label Dissonant. Antona has been releasing his productions on imprints such as Mobilee, Highgrade and Freak ’N Chic for years, and also plays an influential, and often unheralded role behind the scenes at the highly touted Cadenza label. Rules Of Madness is described by Antona as an album about "creating musical trips … and making [people] enjoy the changes of moods: from happiness to melancholy, from energy-pumping moments to relaxing deep waves." And there’s no better way to get acquainted with these trips and deep waves than on Sydney harbour for one of the standout events on the Sydney techno calendar. LINE UP: A GUY CALLED GERALD DRESS CODE: Pirates Of The Underground (use your imaginations, all variations are accepted) COST: $60 Presale (https://www.residentadvisor.net/) PICK UP: 1:30pm pickup Rosebay Wharf DROP OFF: 8:00pm - Commissioner's Steps AFTER PARTY: TBA - Stay tuned! |

11 Nov: Coloursound 004, Wire Club, Leeds, Yorkshire, England |
DetailsLine-up / Promoter / Coloursound Coloursound 005 - Coloursound goes Underground November 11th sees Coloursound cater to a more cosy and intimate vibe, this time taking their lucid party concept to the wine cellar like basement of Leeds club Wire. It has Funktion One sound, red brick walls, exposed beams and the lowest of low ceilings… all perfect for an up close and personal session with some electronic greats. First up is Manchester’s legendary A Guy Called Gerald…. Well, where do you start? He’s a hidden gem, the gateway between Chicago house and Detroit techno and one of a few special producers who entered dance music in the jacking zone. He was arguably the first UK acid house producer (and as such his special acid house set on the night is a real treat) and probably the first producer to have two instrumental dance tracks in the UK charts at the same. His collaborations stem from Frankie Knuckles, Goldie, Finley Quaye and Derrick May through to many more pillars of the dance music community. Quite simply, the man’s a legend. Also on is Maurice Fulton, one of house music’s true originals, an eccentric ex-pat American (currently living in Sheffield) DJ and producer who never fails to surprise and delight his listeners with records on Warp, Sonar, production credits for DFA and as part of pop act Mu with his wife. Next we turn to Holland and Rush Hour man Tom Trago. As well as various high profile remixes in his ten year career, Trago makes confident strides between dance and pop on his most recent records. There are elements of disco and hip-hop, too, as well as plenty of vocals, in the man’s records, so expect much the same from one of his DJ sets. Local Leeds stars Death on the Balcony – whose deep and techy productions have been gaining more and more support recently - round off another all conquering Coloursound line-up. DetailsMixworks Warriors Of Rhythm Tour: Buzz Goree, A Guy Called Gerald & More at Suicide Circus BUZZ GOREE (mixworks, UR) UR – Underground Resistance. Außerdem am Start: A Guy Called Gerald. „Ich bin wohl eine dieser Mumien, die Genres noch immer als eine Art Farbpalette betrachten und gern aus allen vorhandenen schöpfen“. Mit dieser Attitüde rennt der englische Acid House Altmeister heute Abend sicherlich offene Türen ein. |

2 July: We Support Tacheles Vol. 2, Tacheles, Berlin, Germany |
DetailsWe Support Tacheles Vol. 2 with Dr. Motte, Paula P'Cay, A Guy Called Gerald, Oliver Tatsch, Lizzara, Sylvie Marks, DJ Kristin, Tim Thaler & F.O.S.T., Noisebeat Berlin and many more, Visuals: Chuuu & Cyper.....NurSchrec! Videodept. Saturday 2nd of July 2011 the collective electrocult_e.V. is hosting the second „We support Tacheles“- Party in collaboration with Kunsthaus Tacheles from Berlin- Mitte. As for the first event in September 2010, the party is hosted to collect money for Kunsthaus Tacheles and its new „Stiftung Tacheles“ („Foundation Tacheles“). Many Berlin artists and creative hosts of electronic music as Dr. Motte will play and dj during the fundraiser for a minimal donation of 3 EUR from Saturday 10 pm until Sunday 12 pm. Kunsthaus Tacheles in Berlin is looking back on 21 years of independent urban art and is protected as a historic monument of Street Art with its Graffiti painted hallway. This unique open space for various and wild culture has been giving a fresh impetus to the international art scene, draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year to its studios, exhibitions and events and is a model of a vivid artistic network. Nevertheless there is a lack of recognition and appreciation by Berlin politics. „Where politics drops projects, we all have to stand up to show strength.“, says Atman Wiska, founding member of electrocult_e.V.. This is why the collective created the event „We Support Tacheles Vol. 2“ in collaboration with the art house. Next to a variety of the finest electronic music from different genres there will be other great party highlights like the performance of the Japanese action artists „Böse Bohnen“, the iXes studio theatre and Michaela Hartmann. Further on there will be an „informative table“ of different initiatives as „Freiheit statt Angst“ („Freedom instead of fear“) and „Drogenkult.net“. There is also going to be a Chill-Out-Floor, where guests can relax in a quieter atmosphere with Chill-Out- & Ambient Music, fresh fruit and many cushions to sit or lay down. And of course, friendly and favourable investors are cordially invited! |

DetailsA GUY CALLED GERALD: Live in Session An innovator, still innovating. A musician, still resonating. From ‘Voodoo Ray’, the track that practically defines acid house, to modern day live gigs that will become the template for DJing of the future, this Berlin-based, Manchester-born pioneer, with 9 artist albums in a 25 year career, is an international name that has defied genres and continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in the world of electronic music, both in the studio and in the club. 2011 and Gerald Simpson is still the revolutionary, making the concept of the DJ extinct in terms of how we once knew it. Not only is A Guy Called Gerald unique in that he brings his entire production suite into the club for every performance, but it is a genuine LIVE act; a constant interaction with the crowd, a fluid jam session with an instinctive keyboard riff just as likely as a flurry of bass, always pushing the sound system’s capabilities to the limit and then some. There are no inferior-quality, compressed CDs or mp3s here, no pre-programmed laptop; this is the full breadth of the spectrum, this is untarnished, analogue sound for our digitally subdued world. Those lucky enough to have been part of the show - whether they be at Fabric in London, Panorama Bar in Berlin, Robert Johnson in Frankfurt or the Detroit Electronic Movement Festival (DEMF) – will testify to having been moved by it..... physically and emotionally moved, that’s exactly the point!! Music is a way of life for A Guy Called Gerald, an individualist since childhood, when he refused to conform to how a piano should be played, he instead began a personal adventure exploring new rhythms and sounds as well as testing the often disregarded relationship between sound and body. In other words discovering and challenging the shared moods and emotions of people in a club, who are quite literally on the same frequency each time a different pulse, rhythm or tone is introduced. His genre busting reputation traces back to his heritage in black dance music, particularly reggae, jazz and electro funk. Of course his early contributions to acid house and techno cemented his place in dance music culture folklore but his sphere of influence also went deep into the beginnings of drum ‘n’ bass, before coming full circle to today and his proto-acid sound, descended directly from Detroit and Chicago. His latest album ‘Tronic Jazz: The Berlin Sessions’, the follow up to 2006 “Proto Acid The Berlin Sessions” was released in May 2010. On top of releases on seminal labels like Perlon, Sender and Beatstreet over the past 2 years, Gerald continues to release exclusives and rare back catalogue via his web-based labels A GUY CALLED GERALD RECORDS, SUGOI and PROTECHSHON. An iconic name worldwide for sure, but it is as a forward-thinking pioneer that 20 years later A Guy Called Gerald is still leading the way, one step ahead of the pack, shaping the future just like he shaped the past. with local support from BRYAN ZENTZ (Plus 8 • Amam) Friday June 17th, 2011 • Doors @ 10pm Limited $12 tickets are available at the bar at Groove Suite or contact Groove Suite directly on Facebook for PayPal instructions. April 2011 |
30 April: WML Presents: The Art Of Acid, Clustret, Stockholm, Sweden |
DetailsThe Art of Acid - UK legends Concrete Royale proudly presents Acid House is more than just screaming 303s. It is a phenomenon that has spawned countless musical sub genres and caused many sleepless nights. If it wasn’t for Acid house, we wouldn’t be where we are today. It was Acid House that made electronic music a global phenomenon. This is why we celebrate it tonight with some of its greatest ambassadors. The Art of Acid A GUY CALLED GERALD When the young Gerald Simpson handed a test pressing of his 12” Voodoo Ray across the Hacienda’s DJ box to DJ Jon Dasilva in July 1988, he hadn’t considered its impact. Dasilva checked the track immediately and before Gerald had managed to get back on the dance floor, the haunting sound of Voodoo Ray got its first club play….It became a monster Acid House and international hit - one of the biggest and important of its era. In recent years he has been a resident at Fabric and Berghain – always performing Live. As his contract states, he is not a DJ and what you experience with Gerald is the sound of free flowing ideas as he manipulates two synched laptops, an analogue synth and various mixers to devastating results… Gerald also merits a mention in the illustrious history of our lovely lads from Manchester … 808 STATE DJs 808 State was formed back in 1988, around the community of DJs and musicians that worked or hung out at Eastern Bloc, the infamous record shop in Manchester. Then 808 State were Gerald, Martin Price and Graham Massey. Often cited as a major influence by Autechre and Aphex Twin, their first album Newbuild, a raw Acid House album, was released during the Summer of '88. During the making of the second album Quadrastate, Gerald Simpson departed to continue with his solo project A Guy Called Gerald and led to the arrival of the two gentlemen we have the honour of booking for this carnival of Acid House culture. Darren Partington and Andrew Barker joined 808 State and went on to record with Grahame Massey and Price several great albums of electronic music, collaborating on the way with the likes of Bjork, Bernard Sumner and James Dean Bradfield. Their live shows proved techno and House could go there and succeed, paving the way for the Chemical Brothers and Underworld…and their DJ sets are legendarily explosive as both have the hard as nails DJ techniques and a back to basics attitude to DJing that is so refreshing. The influence of 808 State, like Gerald cannot be underestimated on a generation just waking up to the joys of Techno, Acid House and electronic music in general… JON DASILVA Some night clubs have shaped global music trends. Those places that open at just the right time to stick in peoples minds and create a whole new way of looking at things. There was the Loft in New York, The Music Box in Chicago and then there was the The Haçienda in Manchester. In 1988 it took house music and pushed it forward into the international scene that we know today. Many of the worlds great DJs were inspired buy the club. Many of the worlds great promoters were inspired by the club. If it wasn't for the Haçienda, there would be no Cream, if it wasn't for the Haçienda there would be no Fabric… Jon Dasilva, dubbed the “Acid House Legend”, was the DJ that defined the music policy of The Haçienda, in its heyday… Having since then, traveled extensively as a DJ, playing at some of the sharper underground clubs and events since the late 80s / early 90s and continuing to do so today, Dasilva has retained a glorious curiosity for new music and remains one of the most versatile and technically gifted DJs in the world. Arguably one of the 'DJ’s DJ', the story of him teaching Sasha to mix and giving him a break is well worn but also shores up Jon’s status as one of the grand dukes of the scene as he has always encouraged many young artists and DJ’s in Manchester and wherever he’s gone, working in collaborations with many, teaching them the ropes often as they are starting out; a very affable and generous side to his artistic nature, which he has displayed across his own productions, remixes and work with bands. Get there early as Jon is relishing the job of kicking off this night’s madness…bring your whistles but leave your preconceptions at home! ACIEEEEED!!! |

Hier arbeitet er an dem Longplayer "To All Things What They Need", der Anfang 2005 bei K7 Records erscheint. Lineup: A guy called Gerald |

The legendary A Guy Called Gerald appears in his first London show of the year fresh from headlining the 'I Love Acid' arena at the sell out Bloc Weekend at the start of March. Gerald pretty much kick-started UK acid house with his ’88 Hacienda classic ‘Voodoo Ray’ and ‘Pacific State‘ (he was one of the founding members of 808 State) – gatecrashing the charts in the process – and went on to lay down the blueprint for jungle music - and has since continued his role as one of the UK’s most dedicated producers. On top of releases on seminal labels like Perlon, Sender, !K7 and Beatstreet over the past 10 years, GCG released his 9th album ‘Tronic Jazz: The Berlin Sessions’ last year on specialist Berlin label Laboratory Instinct. We welcome one of dance music’s most unassuming heroes to take us way back to a time when US imports were streaming into the underground record stores in Manchester. Plus headlining Room 2 we have Graeme Clark AKA The Revenge. The last couple of years have seen Graeme’s star rise and rise. His early cuts on Jiscomusic gained him early support across the board, and releases on the likes of Mule Musiq, Delusions Of Grandeur and his own Instruments Of Rapture label have followed. 2011 will see another busy year for Graeme with a reworks LP forthcoming on Z Records and a 6th Borough Project LP due out in Spring on Instruments Of Rapture. Supporting across 2 rooms we have Mark Storie. Rob Alldritt. Basement Boogaloo. Rich Smith. Archie Hamilton (Moscow). Saorise Ryan. Dan Holmes. Matt Sharp and Hugo Seymour. 11 March: Stretch Disco, Band On The Wall, Manchester, England |
DetailsA Guy Called Gerald (DJ Influences Set) Stretch Disco proudly presents one of the pioneers of electronic dance music. From original acid house and techno tracks to drum & bass beats, Manchester’s own A Guy Called Gerald will be playing an exclusive influences set. "This is a rare opportunity for me to play the blueprint to the music I make today." A Guy Called Gerald As a teenager during the early 80s Gerald religiously attended Greg Wilson’s weekly Wednesday night residency at Legends (now 5th Avenue), absorbing fresh electro-funk cuts during a time when live recorded music was being more heavily fused with electronic sounds, a pre-cursor to the sampling era of Hip Hop production. Only a few years later and Gerald would be sending demo tapes to Stu Allen at Piccadilly radio for his local talent showcase. The demos were heard by Rham Records in New Brighton who decided to release Voodoo Ray and a legend was born. Make sure you reach Stretch Disco at Band on the Wall for this special night. Expect a journey through the worlds of Jazz, Funk, Soul, Disco, Electro and Chicago Acid House with A Guy Called Gerald at the controls. This event will begin at 11pm but our Picturehouse Cafe Bar is open for drinks and good times from 5.30pm. |
February 2011 |
12 Feb: FAC51 The Hacienda, Babel, Malmo, Sweden |
Hacienda feat. 1 Feb: Club La Feria, Bellavista, Santiago, Chile |
Details1st Feb PRIMERA VEZ EN CHILE !!! A GUY CALLED GERALD CLUB LA FERIA LINE UP ...Roman MDHS An innovator, still innovating. 2010 and Gerald Simpson is still the revolutionary, making the concept of the DJ extinct in terms of how we once knew it. Those lucky enough to have been part of the show - whether they be at Fabric in London, Panorama Bar in Berlin, Robert Johnson in Frankfurt or the Detroit Electronic Movement Festival (DEMF) – will testify to having been moved by it….. physically and emotionally moved, that’s exactly the point!! |
