Legendary music pioneer A GUYY CALLED GERALD will be gracing the crowd with a very special live performance. The release party of the Japanese limited edition Mix CD Vo.1, which was compiled by Peter Hook of New Order, was a huge success with the crowd demanding more. At Summer Sonic 07, Peter Hook once again wow'd a crowd of over 7000 people at the K・SOUNDS stage. Volumes 2 and 3 are both brought to you by Defstar Records and will definitely continue to fuel the Mad Chester revival.

Here is a transcript of the Time Out review of our October 07 Party:

Time Out’s first preview of Wang in 2000 described it as putting ‘an end to further back-in-the-day nostalgia by moving on from where the so-called old guard left off’. It is not the case for tonight’s shindig seven years later, however, as the Wang crew appear to be getting soggy at the very thought of Gerald Simpson (aka A Guy Called Gerald) and Graham Massey (of 808 State) reuniting here.

Not that you can blame them – it’s the first time the two UK house legends have played live together since the second summer of love (we’re talking 1989) and who hasn’t basked in the classic ‘Pacific State’ or ‘Voodoo Ray’ at some point in their clubbing career? It’s a big deal for a crowd who are as keen on the classic tracks as they are on fresh and hard-hitting electronic genius.

It’s no surprise then that Simian Mobile Disco are tagging along. It’s a rare chance to catch the infectious twosome for those that couldn’t elbow their way into their storming Scala show last Thursday. Wang has a fine habit of showcasing future stars before they shoot off into the stratosphere. It throws them in with maverick masters like Andrew Weatherall and the result is not incongruous as you might expect. Young guns this time are Uncle Buck, a duo touted as the next Chemical Brothers (but then again, who hasn’t been these days?) who have barely had time to forge their own sound but are, even so, going to erupt. They’ve already graced Ibiza Rocks, Glastonbury and Fabric and their electro-house re-rubs should tear the roof off these fine-art studios. Andrew Weatherall is popping in, so isn’t it about time you popped your Wang cherry? It’s only fair on your ears.

Der in Manchester geborene Musiker A Guy Called Gerald zählt seit den späten 80ern zu den einflussreichsten Persönlichkeiten an der Schnittstelle von Techno, House und Drum`n`Bass. Von 1988 bis 1989 war er Mitglied der Gruppe 808 State, danach verfolgte er als A Guy Called Gerald eine Solokarriere. Seine beeindruckende Discografie umfasst ganz 14 Alben, von denen besonders die beiden Erstlinge „Automanikk“ und „Newbuild“, sowie "28 Gun Bad Boy" aus dem Jahr 1993 legendären Ruf geniesen. 1997 etabliert sich A Guy Called Gerald mit „Black Secret Technology" endgültig in der Riege des UK Urban Sounds; es folgten gemeinsame Tracks mit David Bowie und Tricky. Mittlerweile ist er in Berlin zuhause, wo er mit Benno Blome eine Neuvertonung des alten Chicago-Klassikers „Time To Yak“ auf Sender Records veröffentlichte.

There have been definite signs of a rave revival over the past year or so. Not nu-rave, of course, but the return of actual purveyors of gloriously silly old rave to clubs. A Guy Called Gerald follows in the footsteps of Altern-8 and SL2, which will give elderly former ravers a chance to reminisce and a welcome first-hand experience to those of us too young the first time round.

Now who here has heard of a Guy Called Gerald?
Hmmm not many…
Who owns an early 808 state album?
Or a ground breaking piece of ambient Drum and Bass called Black Secret Technology?
To be honest I was shocked he was even playing.
I was shocked there were so many people.
But I wasn’t too shocked that it was an incredibly good gig!
His style still has much of that eighties funky percussive groove to it. In the daze before rave when house was techno and everything was subtle, funky and based on locked grooves. The tunes proceed by way of crunchy but slightly wonky industrial baselines, tinny acid squelches weaving in and out and pin point hits of 808 drum machine. The final weapon is the very occasional use of awesomely beautiful vocal samples.
He’s not adverse to throwing in lines from Detroit Grand Pubah’s sandwiches, Boogie wonder land and even an awesomely treated and isolated sample of Sylvesterout of the 1970s classic “you make my feel mighty real”?
This was the best moment for me as he froze out the entire track except that one highly treated highly pitched voice filling the tent with its
“feeeeel real, feeeeel real, feeeeel real, feeeeel real” - beat kicks in – frenzied crowd response. Finishes with a very silly version of 1988’s chart hit Voodoo Ray.
John Peel would,without doubt, have been somewhere at the back, just smiling and nodding his head…"

Im Zusammenhang mit der Geschichte des Techno darf sein Name nicht fehlen: Gerald Simpson aka A Guy Called Gerald. Ende der 80er war er mit 808 State im Zentrum der britischen Raveolution, mit "Voodoo Ray" ebnete er Acid-House den Weg, seine Platte "28 Gun Bad Boy" gilt als Wegbereiter des Drum'n'Bass. Musikalische Grenzen sind sein Ding nicht, im Vordergrund stehen vielmehr Atmosphäre, Gefühl und die Tanzbarkeit seiner Tracks. "I make music to dance to. If you can´t dance to it, it´s not dancemusic", so die einfache Erklärung für die Musik, die er macht. Sein aktueller Release "Proto Acid - The Berlin Sessions" ist 2006 auf Laboratory Instinct erschienen und stellt die gelungene Symbiose aus modernem Minimal-Techno und Geralds Wurzeln im Detroit-Techno und Acid-House dar.

Die strom.- Crew freut sich, am Freitag den 09.März 2007 einen Künstler aus Manchester/England zu Gast zu haben, dessen Name im Zusammenhang mit der Entwicklungsgeschichte von Acid-House und Drum´n´Bass nicht unerwähnt bleiben darf. A Guy called Gerald macht auf seiner Proto Acid Live-Tour halt im Waagenbau und wird uns mit einem mehr als dreistündigen !! Liveset beehren.
Es gibt Musiker, die zum richtigen Zeitpunkt den richtigen Song geschrieben haben und dafür auf ewig Stars sein werden. Und es gibt solche, die zum richtigen Zeitpunkt den richtigen Song schrieben, doch bevor die Welle des großen Ruhmes über sie schwappte, waren sie bereits schon wieder woanders. Der in Manchester geborene Gerald Simpson ist da ein fabelhaftes Beispiel

Wer weiß heute schon noch, dass viele Spielarten elektronischer Clubmusik durch diesen Mann entscheidend mitgeprägt wurden. Als Mitglied der längst legendären 808 State schrieb er Ende der 80er mit „Pacific State“ einen der ersten großen Techno-Hits. Während die Single und das dazu gehörige Album „Newbuild“ ausgiebig die Runde machte, war Gerald Simpson schon mit seinen nächsten Ideen beschäftigt. Als „A Guy Called Gerald“ schraubte er parallel zur Bandarbeit an eigenen Tracks und auch da ließ der Erfolg nicht lange auf sich warten. In seiner Solosingle „Voodoo Ray“ sehen nicht wenige den Ausgangspunkt des britischen Acid House Hypes. Es folgt ein Majordeal mit Sony und der Release der ersten Platte “Automannik”. Seine Popularität steigt, aber parallel auch der Wunsch, von der Plattenfirma nicht gegängelt zu werden. Folgerichtig trennen sich beider Wege und Mr. Simpson findet sich im geliebten Underground wieder. 1993 erscheint “28 Gun Bad Boy”, eine weitere Evolutionsstufe von Drum’n'Bass. Mit dem 1997er “Black Secret Technology”-Album etabliert sich Gerald Simpson endgültig in der Riege des UK Urban Sounds und arbeitet u.a. mit David Bowie und Tricky zusammen, obwohl er zu dieser Zeit eigentlich im New Yorker Stadtteil Brooklyn lebt. Mittlerweile nennt er Berlin seine neue Wahlheimat. Hier arbeitete er an dem Longplayer “To All Things What They Need”, der Anfang 2005 bei K7 Records erschien, und 2006 entsteht ebenfalls in Berlin das Album “Proto Acid: The Berlin Sessions”. Hier kehrt Simpson zu seinen Wurzeln im Acid-House der späten 80er Jahre zurück.

Dem Herren aus Manchester stehen auf dem ersten Flur die beiden strom.- Ladies Laya Lopass und Gesine Pertenbreiter zur Seite und den zweiten Floor berockt das Herrenduo Wegner & Sebus. Auf in den Bau !!

10-го февраля впервые в России на сцене клуба «Б1 Maximum» выступит A Guy Called Gerald с 3-часовым сетом со своего последнего альбома Proto Acid/The Berlin Sessions. Это будет необычный сет на вертушках — реальное шоу, поток пульсирующей музыки, льющейся прямо на танцпол. Вместе с ним на сцене будет босс немецкого лейбла Laboratory Instinct DJ LYO25 и лондонская VJ-команда Exceeda.

A Guy Called Gerald, Джеральд Симпсон (Gerald Simpson), один из самых прогрессивных техно-диджеев, начинавший с эйсид-хауса в 80-е годы. На него повлиял ямайский блюбит (у Джеральда ямайские корни), детройтское техно, чикагский эйсид-хаус и джаз-фьюжн.

Во времена бума на брейкданс и хип-хоп Джеральд увлекся электронной музыкой. Он начал экспериментировать с записями и драм-машиной и сколотил группу Scratchbeat Masters. Позже с Грэхемом Мэсси (Graham Massey) и Мартином Прайсом (Martin Price) Джеральд создал группу 808 State. В 1988 году они выпустили альбом Newbuilt, после чего Джеральд ушел в сольную карьеру.

Позже Джеральд основывает свой лейбл Juicebox Records и выпускает целый ряд синглов в жанре, который впоследствии назовут джанглом и драм-н-бассом. Следующий альбом Black Secret Technology был очень хорошо принят и считается одним из первых драм-н-басс альбомов.

В 1997 году Джеральд перебирается в Нью-Йорк и выпускает альбом Essence — первую пластинку миксов. Его самый знаменитый сингл Voodoo Ray продолжил свое существование в видеоигре Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

DJ LYO25 (Laboratory Instinct Berlin)

Основатель известного лейбла Laboratory Instinct должен быть отличным диджеем по определению. Лейбл выпустил работы лучших диджеев и музыкантов (V.L.A.D., Erast, Roman Flügel, Atom™) и заработал отличную репутацию в музыкальной среде. Он знаменит и своими 24-часовыми нон-стоп вечеринками, на которых выступают Timeblind, Jake Mandell dissect Hamijama, Andrea Parker, Bleed, Karl Marx Stadt, Sascha, The Staubgolds, DJ Pete и другие.

VJ Exceeda

Аудиовизуальный коллектив под управлением Хавьера Перкинса (Xavier Perkins), в составе которого режиссеры, редакторы, аудио-инженеры, 3D-графические дизайнеры и монтажеры. Хавьер и команда почувствовали новые потребности публики и стали экспериментировать и выдавать на-гора многокомпонентные композиции. Они выбрали для себя фанк и электро-бит как наиболее близкие направления. В их активе выступления в клубах Fabric, Ministry, Gatecrasher и на фестивалях Glastonbury, Roskilder, Big Chill и Cimatics.

Tony Key

Тони начал собирать house-музыку в 1992 году, а двумя годами позже он перешел на винил. В 1996 он уже выступал в клубах Америки, Германии, Италии и Айя-Напы (Кипр).

Tony Key предпочитает интеллектуальную house-музыку и играет NY tribal house, west coast house, soulful house и deep & jazzy. В его коллекции винила более 5-ти тысяч пластинок.

Перечислить все клубы, в которых играл Тони, довольно сложно. С 1997 по 1998 он работал в легендарном нью-йоркском клубе Twilo. В Москве он играл практически везде — от «Пропаганды» и «Министерства», резидентом которых он является, до «Цеппелина», First, DJ-бара «Шамбала» и клубов Jet Set, «Микс» и «16 тонн».

A Guy Called Gerald is de Manchesteriaan Gerald Simpson. Gerald werkte in zijn lange loopbaan met verschillende artiesten en labels. Maar er was altijd een droom; to take the studio into the club. Zijn laatste album is de verwezenlijking van die droom. Het album Proto Acid – The Berlin Sessions is een 71 minuten durende live opgenomen sessie.
