An iconic name in dance music, 'A Guy Called Gerald' stands out for consistent innovation, excellence and refusal to compromise. 'A Guy Called Gerald' kick started Europe’s acid house frenzy with his ’88 classic ‘Voodoo Ray’ and 'Pacific State' (as part of 808 State) and went on to lay down the blueprint for jungle / drum n bass. Nine albums and 25 years of independence later, he continues to push the boundaries of electronic dance music, touring worldwide bringing his "true school" flavour to a world overloaded with pop pap. Riddled with samples that have no home but congregate with the other bodies of the track to keep you second guessing on the dance floor. 11 November: Enter Afrofuturism, Six Dogs, Athens, Greece |
DetailsNov 11 A Guy Called Gerald SATURDAY 11 NOVEMBER As a term, Afrofuturism appeared in the 1990s to describe an Afro-American artistic trend which had found expression in sci-fi, fantasy literature, music, the visual arts, comics and movies. Today, it is an inexhaustible field of academic, political, artistic and scientific investigation and production which incorporates elements from the cultures of Africa, America, Britain and the Caribbean. The history and roots of the Afro-American community were systematically eradicated from the white, slave-trading consciousness. What started as the kidnapping of people from Africa between the 15th and 19th centuries developed into the post-colonial mindset of the contemporary world. The community's need to construct myths of origin, to recover their stolen past and reshape their futures found expression in sci-fi, music and technology. Afrofuturism bridges past and future to liberate the present through musical, visual, narrative and political terms that transcend all and every historical limitation of race and gender. It constructs myths, conjecture and fantasy by linking the black experience to the techno-culture of the 20th and 21st centuries. It draws its ideas from the African cultural and philosophical tradition, the art produced by the African diaspora, and criticism of the post-colonial condition, and seeks to rewrite the Western narrative on colonialism, technology, race and time. "Enter Afrofuturism" is a 6-day festival that maps Afrofuturism as a cultural and political movement through concerts, talks, workshops and film screenings. The concerts will be held on the OCC's Main Stage and at Six d.o.g.s. and will feature the following artists: Sun Ra Arkestra, Actress, Dopplereffekt, Moor Mother, A Guy Called Gerald, Voltnoi, ATH Kids, Nkisi, Black Quantum Futurism, Black Athena. The guest speakers at the lectures and open discussions will include: otolith group, Reynaldo Anderson, Louis Chude-Sokei, Rasheedah Phillips, Nkisi, Abdul Qadim Haqq, Tabita Rezaire, Erik Steinskog, Nathalie Mba Bikoro et al. Moreover, in association with the Goethe Institut Athens and Johannesburg, short films and documentaries will be screened which explore Afrofuturism through the history of black music. Jazz, Detroit techno and the contemporary music produced in Africa's metropolises are some of the featured subjects in a collaboration that will also include the screening of virtual reality films. credits Curated by: DETACH (Voltnoi & Quetempo) The series of screenings is staged in association with the Goethe-Institut Athens and the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg. See below the programme. The entrance is free and on a first come, first served basis. As a term, Afrofuturism appeared in the 90s to describe an Afro-American artistic movement which had found expression in sci-fi, fantasy literature, music, the visual arts, comics and movies. Today, it is an inexhaustible field of academic, political, artistic and scientific investigation and production which incorporates elements from the black cultures from the diaspora of West Africa, North America, Britain and the Caribbean, creating a Black Atlantic map. The talks, discussions and workshops programme will be held οutside the OCC (Epikourou 26 and Korinis 4, Athens centre), featuring the following artists: Rasheedah Phillips (Black Quantum Futurism), Nathalie Mba Bikoro, Louis Chude-Sokei, Reynaldo Anderson, A Guy Called Gerald, The Otolith Group, Black Athena, Tabita Rezaire, Nkisi, Abdul Qadim Haqq, Voltnoi, Quetempo. SATURDAY 11 NOVEMBER 18:45-19:15 A Guy Called Gerald: Ιn conversation with Black Athena Since the late 80s, producer and dj A Guy Called Gerald has been at the centre of the UK’s club scene and club culture. Drawing early influences from his Jamaican roots, he danced in Manchester’s vibrant club scene in the early 80s, immersed himself into Electro, B-Boy culture and became an instrumental figure in both Acid House and Jungle. What is the common thread that runs all through these different styles and forms, what was the role of the new digital technologies first made widely available at the time, what inspiration did he draw from science fiction at the time? Did the new cultures and technologies offer a new type of escapism for young people coming through at the time? |

DetailsOCT 20 20 October at 23:30 to 21 October at 6:00 UTC+02 Ticket information Details International music and talent booking agency MN2S are proud to announce details of their always-packed ADE showcase for 2017, with three absolute legends and pioneers of house music at the helm. MN2S have handpicked three of the true architects of the genre as we know it to give the ADE crowd a serious house music history lesson. Roger Sanchez has been a majorly resurgent force in the scene in recent years, launching a second label, Undr The Radar, to provide more underground sounds alongside the well-established Stealth Records. Back in the studio with various collaborators, his productions have once again laid waste to dancefloors the world over, continuing his impressive heritage that included chart smash ‘Another Chance’ and countless classic tracks throughout the ‘90s. His incessant touring schedule continues to take him far and wide across the world. Few producers have a body of work so prolific and influential as Todd Terry, whose seminal work begin in the acid house heyday of the late ‘80s before he defined the sound of a genre through countless remixes and aliases in the ‘90s. The GRAMMY-winning producer continues to deliver dancefloor bombs at an incredible rate, with his InHouse Records label supporting the new generation alongside his own formidable output. Taking in all walks of house music in his sets, he has an incredible catalogue to draw from and has spawned hundreds of imitators over the years. A Guy Called Gerald flies the flag for the UK, reminding us that it wasn’t just the American legends who helped to build the sound we know as house. From the stone-cold classic ‘Voodoo Ray’ through to his excursions into drum & bass and more recently his sublime analog house and techno workouts that join the dots between his origins and the output that followed, he has always been one of the scene’s most innovative forces. His resolutely underground sounds create the perfect compliment to Sanchez and Terry, making this a truly special line-up of DJs who will cover much ground across the night. Taking place as always at the intimate Sugarfactory, MN2S’s ADE party will be driven by the venue’s thumping sound system and electric atmosphere and is always one of the highlights of the Dutch festival’s schedule. DetailsThursday Oct 5 Peak Time Episode premieres Thu at 5:00pm BST A Guy Called Gerald on 808 mastery, 21st-century acid and helping make electronic music in the UK what it is today. This guy called Gerald Simpson has done much to shape British electronic music into what it is today. Starting off with his early crew in Manchester, the Scratchbeat Masters, A Guy Called Gerald was a founding member of 808 State — he released his seminal acid house classic “Voodoo Ray” in 1988. Instead of resting on his laurels he started Juice Box Records, a label that helped lay the foundations for what became jungle and drum & bass. His classic record 28 Gun Bad Boy was the very first artist album in the genre. His next album, Black Secret Technology, followed in 1995, and in 2008 it was re-released in an overhauled and remastered version; the record is cited by many as an influence, including Burial. After relocating to New York in the late ’90s, then Berlin in the early 00s, Simpson focused on his techno and house roots, releasing tracks on !K7, Laboratory Instinct, Perlon and Bosconi, proving that his musical mastery works everywhere. 19 August: Flamefest 2017, Kent, England |
DetailsAUG 18 18 August at 16:00 to 20 August at 22:00 Flamefest – the festival for enlightened, kinky partygoers – is back! On 18-20 August, join us in an area of outstanding beauty less than an hour from London and Brighton. Get back to nature and rediscover your wild side with DJs, live music, extreme performances, movie nights, daytime workshops, ridiculous games, an adult play area and steamy outdoor hot tubs. ***Music*** During the day, we’ll be playing chill-out, funk, rock, trip hop, and eclectic vibes to accompany the relaxed atmosphere of daylight Flamefest. On Friday and Saturday night, our main stage (with its magnificent Void Acoustics sound system) plays host to our epic DJ line-up! Electronic music giants and former Fabric residents Plump DJs lead the charge along with house legend A Guy Called Gerald and rising bass music star Marten Hørger. The Beat Assassins bring along live vocalist, ELi, for their set, and Imaginarium promoters Voodoo Lynch Mob make their Flamefest debut as they bring out their brand new single, fresh from smashing it at the Isle of Wight Festival. The legendary Tim Samsara makes an appearance, while rising stars like G Minor, Adam Schock, Rockit Riyad, LaGuardia and Heleness will all contribute to the musical mayhem. Sam 'Fitch' Redfern and U4ric will also be spinning the tunes, and we welcome back Flamefest favourites Peter Andrews, T7A and Beatroute plus fetish veteran Rob Maynard. Just added to the line-up too are DJ Bobby Lost, Don Capello and Stefan Rou, funksters Kontroversi will also be putting in an appearance as they release their debut single! We’ll be dazzling you with some spectacular lighting from the main stage too, so keep your shades on all through the night. ***Performances*** And that’s before we even talk about the supervised adult play area, where there are sure to be a few exhibitionists eager to show off their talents... ***Themes*** WIND: Breeze in and out through the main entrance/exit, where our helpful attendants will be happy to show you to your parking space and get you settled. Just look what the wind blew in! EARTH: The green, green grass of Flamefest will be your home for the weekend, whether you're camping in your own tent, bringing along your campervan or staying in one of our boutique tents. The Earth area is your base between visits to the main zones, with easy access to toilets and fresh running water and showers. FIRE: The disco inferno that is the main dance area – the burning heart of the festival where you can feel the heat of the main stage. Don't try to fight the fire: let it consume you and fill you with passion while our DJs and performers entertain you with their searing night-time spectacle! WOOD: Rooted in nature, this woodland area is a place to chill, eat, drink, relax and chat. Comfy sofas, logs and hammocks are there for you to be seated while gentler sounds play than in the fiery main area. Here, beneath the trees, is where the Flamefest daytime workshops are held: learn hooping or poi, join a drawing or yoga class, or take part in a cacao ceremony. You can also get a drink or some food from the canteen or bathe in one of our luxury hot tubs in the nearby glade. WATER: The Flamefest lake is the most peaceful area in the festival – a place where you can sit all day, watch the water, and soak up the beauty. This is where to go if you want to be away from the main action, to take time out alone or with your friends or lovers. Immerse yourself in stillness and tranquillity, a safe distance from the burning heart of Flamefest. ***Philosophy*** From the Flames Events were created with one aim: to bring communities together – particularly the kinksters, the ravers and those on the 'conscious' scene. We believe these communities have a lot in common and can all benefit from joining forces. Flamefest is an opportunity to create, explore, live out fantasies, meet similar minds, be the best version of yourself and become more than the sum of your parts – all accompanied by an excellent sonic and visual experience, delivered by the finest AV systems. While there’s a strict code of etiquette in the adult play area, the rest of the festival is simply governed by respect – for each other and for the environment. ***Home comforts*** Don’t worry, we’ve sorted out all the practical stuff too: - A canteen serving meat, vegetarian, vegan and GF food ***Tickets*** Standard Advance tickets are still available after our early bird tickets sold out. Luxury boutique tents are also available as well as coaches running between London and the Flamefest site. Get yours here today! https://www.tickettailor.com/checkout/view-event/id/74063/chk/6ced |

Nine albums and 25 years of independence later, he continues to push boundaries of electronic music, bringing his "true school" flavor across the world. But it is Gerald’s own productions and refusal to go any route but his own which has marked him out. He continues to be in demand worldwide with his Live In Session shows using a vast patchwork of past, present and future experimenting effortlessly between early acid house through abstract tech breaks into dreamscapes of futuristic oscillations. At Glastonbury Festival in 2016 he will performed with Funktion One’s Ambisonic Experimental system – a six stack Ambisonic full-sphere surround sound technique that is ‘capable of recreating accurate three- dimensional sound stages from original recordings’. In the studio he is busy recording a steady stream of releases on his own digital label and a new album due out in mid 2017. 1 July: Kelvedon Bash, Kelvedon Hall, Brentwood, Essex, England |
DetailsA Guy Called Gerald at Kelvedon Bash, Kelvedon Hall, Brentwood, Essex Date / 1 July 2017 Kelvedon Bash - A brand new intimate arts and music festival 30 June - 2 July Details Kelvedon Hall is 19 miles from London. It was built it 1715 by Sir John Wright. It was bought by the Channon family in the thirties by “Chips” Channon a politician and socialite. Henry and Katie Channon now live at the house and have decided to run an event on the grounds. The idea of the “bash ” is the intimate feel, a house party that you are a part of. The site looks across at the impressive Queen Anne house, which we will project images onto, in a direct contrast the old and the new. Modern meets the old. www.kelvedonbash.com Although music is an integral part KelvedonBash is not simply a music festival, it is about all of the Arts. As significant art collectors themselves it is important that it promotes what Henry and Katiebelieve in. Paul Saunders owns and runs both Westbank Art Gallery and Urban in Ibiza which will travel to Kelvedon with leading street artists who will decorate and perform throughout the weekend stamping its unique edgy brand on this beautiful country house. Leading street artists will decorate the arena. As part of the interactive ethos of our festival, we will also be having: graffiti walls an art hunt and Kids Paws, something for everyone. A large attraction of the weekend will be a search for ‘The New Young Face of Essex.’ With a celebrity model coming to judge the final. We will be collaborating with local and London fashion schools; we want our models to wear innovative clothes designed by the up-and-coming generation of designers as well as more established names in the business. Our preferred styles and ideas will be showcasing breakthrough designs with themes including recycling and reinventing. A large film tent will be in situ run by Lara Agnew, documentary maker and teacher at NFTS (National film school). This multi-dimensional project will include crowd participations creating a constant live feed. Film entertainment for all ages. With an onsite editing suite, young filmmakers can get hands on experience and learn some new skills. Although small, it is vital to our ethos that Kelvedon Bash is special, interesting and original. The best of what street food has to offer will be available. Seoul comes to Essex with Kogi, traditional English with a Hog roast, the Viet Van and of course The All Day Breakfast Bar. |

To say that we have a legend of the scene headlining would be a massive understatement; we’re overwhelmed to announce that none other than 808 state’s A Guy Called Gerald will be topping the bill… Few people can claim to have had the impact on a musical scene as Manchester’s A Guy Called Gerald. Starting out in the late eighties and inspired by the emerging Hacienda scene around him, one of his earliest releases literally changed the musical landscape: his ‘Voodoo Ray’ track with its gurgling bassline, reversed samples and otherworldly atmospheres came to define the new acid house sound and has remained a timeless classic to this day. |

DetailsOpium with A Guy Called Gerald - Live Date / Saturday 25 March 2017 Line-up / A Guy Called Gerald (3 HOUR LIVE SET) Saturday 25th of March we are back in the infamous basement "club vaag” and it will be a special night. A night guided by a true Manchester hero called, Gerald Simpson aka “a guy called Gerald”, who has been active as dj & producer since the 80’s. After forming the 808 State, he left the group in 1988 after a few problems. Like this he was able to concentrate more on his solo work in his little attic studio, with "voodoo ray” as a result. As being the first UK acid house producer and pioneer, he achieved the rare feat of having not one but two instrumental dance tracks in the UK charts at the same time. He is a self-written bible of dance music and we are happy to have him over for a 3 hour live set!! We also invited the guys of vice city for some funky monkey business. JOIN US, LET’S SPREAD SOME OPIUMVIBES!!! |

Where do you start with A Guy Called Gerald? A hidden gem, the gateway between Chicago house / Detroit Techno and the UK dance music explosion in the late 80s. He is one of a few special producers who entered dance music in the jacking zone. He is the first UK acid house producer and probably the first producer to have two instrumental dance tracks in the UK charts at the same. He formed 808 State with a drum machine, a 303, 2 Roland SH101s and 2 other humans. His collaborations stem from Frankie Knuckles, Goldie, Finley Quaye and Derrick May through to Herbie Hancock, remixed for David Bowie, Lamb, Stone Roses, Black Uhuru, Can, Tricky, Roman Fluegel and The Orb and toured with New Order, Tricky and Bebel Gilberto. An iconic name in dance music, A Guy Called Gerald stands out for consistent innovation, excellence and refusal to compromise. A Guy Called Gerald kick started Europe’s acid house frenzy releasing the first UK acid house record, the ’88 classic ‘Voodoo Ray’ and went on to lay down the blueprint for jungle / drum n bass. Expect anything from early acid house through abstract tech breaks or dreamscapes of futuristic oscillations. You are in the hands of a true master.. 28 January: 030303 Rave Edition, De Helling, Utrecht, The Netherlands |
DetailsJAN 28 De Helling, Helling 7, 3523 CB Utrecht, The Nethertlands Details ☻ A GUY CALLED GERALD A Guy Called Gerald (U.K.) is de artiestennaam van acid-housepionier Gerald Simpson.
