Info: Eine Ikone kehrt mit einem Drum & Bass Set ins Brain zurück: A Guy Called Gerald - Manchester-Legende, Ausnahmeproduzent, DJ extraordinaire. Seit den späten Achtziger Jahren legt der Mann bahnbrechende Stücke und Alben vor: Den Rave-Klassiker „Pacific State“ von 808 State, die Acid House-Hymne „Voodoo Ray“ und genreprägende Alben wie „28 Gun Bad Boy“, „Black Secret Technology“ und „Essence“. Und nun „First Try“, A Guy Called Geralds neue EP. Enstanden in Geralds neuer Wahlheimat Berlin, zeigt die EP, dass er wie eh und je ganz vorne ist, seinem persönlichen Stil aber unverändert treu bleibt. Der EP- Opener „First Try“ ist ein typischer A Guy Called Gerald- Track: Mächtig klingende, episch-voluminöse Flächen, eine rasant nach vorne gehende Kickdrum, gekoppelt mit Minimal-Acid-Sounds, die lässig über dem Groove tänzeln. Ein Track, der jede Tanzfläche in Verzückung versetzen dürfte. Etwas, was auch mit „Meaning“, geschehen dürfte, ein deeper, elektronischer Track, der mit einem leicht breakbeatigen Groove versehen ist. Die B-Seite eröffnet mit „Pump“, einem straighten House-Stomper, bei dem String-Akzente und funky Akkorde einen unwiderstehlichen Drive erzeugen. „Tageen“, der Schlusstrack der „First Try“ EP glänzt mit einem Digital-Jazz-Feeling, instrumentiert mit einem Kontrabass, Live-Percussions, Synthie-Strings und 303-Beats. Die „First Try“ EP von A Guy Called Gerald: Eine Single, die den Hörer mit Spannung auf das neue Album „To All Things What They Need“ von A Guy Called Gerald entlässt. Die Ikone wird also weiter von sich Reden machen.

"Another top night from the Luv Jaming ONKers Dan was on the wheels to start the night and was in fine form, Followed by chrisoph again these resies are all top jocks ensuring a quality set of dirty filth. Guy called gerrald came on, all i got to say is WOW WOW and WOW again minimal techno i love it he finished off with voodoo ray(Suprsingly) a very drawn out and cool trippy version dunno the mix but im sure some train spotter out there will enlighten me and he finished off with 808 state Pacific state to send the place into a frenzy. Coley the main dude finished off the night with a set of messy shenangans to finish us off. This night has a really party atmos the bar was empty as everyone ripped up the dance floor. There was white masks given out so everywhere you looked there was these freakout white faces quite scary at times when come up from mid gurn and open your eyes. There was also the obligitory animal mask doing the rounds i think i had the bulls one for half the night my memory gets hazey these days i wonder why that is. To top it all you get a free cd(which you always do) on the way out which im listening to now some damn fine elctro tech house filithyness mixed by Chrisoph top cd mate!!!!!!!"

k7-Label Night - Benjamin Diamond, DJ Kaos, A Guy Called Gerald

Nach den Gauloises Cookin´ Blue Touren sind nun die Gauloises Labelnights ins Leben gerufen worden, um nach tollen Live-Konzerten auch anspruchsvolle Tanzmusik in die hiesigen Clubs zu befördern. Die Editiion in diesem Monat geht mit aktuellen Stars des Berliner Kultlabels !K7 auf Tour und wird auch in Erlangen stoppen.

Benjamin Diamond, dessen Stimme dereinst Stardusts Überhit „Music Sounds Better With You“ ausmachte, bestätigt mit „Out Of Myself“, seinem ersten Album für !K7, dass die Musik 2005 tatsächlich wesentlich besser klingen wird. Mit ihm.

Nach dem riesigen Erfolg der „Stardust“ Nummer, der den vielbeschworenen neuen musikalischen French Touch (Motorbass, Daft Punk, Air) final und global chartswürdig werden ließ - und damit auch die Schublade für die meisten seiner Protagonisten wenn nicht zumachte, so doch bedenklich quietschen ließ - nahm Diamond sein Debutalbum für Epic / Sony auf: „Strange Attitude“ erschien im Jahr 2000. Seitdem hat sich Benjamin Diamond auf die Entwicklung seines Labels „Diamond Traxx“ konzentriert und auf diversen Veröffentlichungen als Gastsänger (Octet, Cosmo Vitelli) bzw. Remixer (für verschiedene Release auf Kompakt) fungiert. Aber es ist nicht nur das von ihm mitbetriebene Trüffelschweinlabel „Diamond Traxx“, das auf zwei unwahrscheinlich guten Compilations („Dirty Diamonds“ Vol.1 und 2) Fantastisches zutage förderte, das ihn beschäftigte, sondern vor allem der Tauchgang ins musikalische Selbst, den der junge Mann mit „Out Of Myself“ mehr als bravourös gemeistert hat.

Das House-Etikett ist nun allerdings endgültig passé. Statt dessen hören wir eine fantastische, bewegende Singer-Songwriter-Platte, aus der Diamonds Bewunderung für Künstler wie Prince, Bob Dylan, Ray Davies von den Kinks, Arthur Lee von Love, Paul Weller und New Order deutlich herauszuhören ist: Uptempo Rockhymnen, Tracks mit aufwändigen Orchesterarrangements und melancholisch-zurückgenommene Folk-Pop-Nummern.

Zwei Jahre hat Benjamin Diamond an seinem aktuellen Album gebastelt, hat alle Tracks alleine komponiert und selbst die Aufnahmesessions geleitet. Einige berühmte Freunde standen ihm dabei zur Seite: Curtis schrieb gemeinsam mit Benjamin den Track „Lights In The Sky“, Cosmo Vitelli produzierte „These Emotions“, Benjamin Morando (Octet) brachte mit seinen elektronischen copy-paste Einlagen zusätzlich Farbe in die Arrangements, und das Mixing erledigte Julien Delfaud, dessen Künste u.a. schon Air, Pet Shop Boys und Phoenix zu jenem entscheidenden Quentchen mehrheitsfähigen Wohlfühlsounds verhalf. Außerdem dabei: der schottischen Schlagzeuger Marc Kerr (Mellow, Les Rita Mitsouko, Pierre Bondu, etc.) und der Bassist Lionel Rault (Flairs, Ben Symphonic Orchestra). Lionel wird man demnächst übrigens auch als Teil von Benjamin Diamonds Band (bestehend aus Gesang, Baß, Schlagzeug, Gitarre, Keyboards) auf der Bühne sehen.

Die 11 sagenhaften Pop-Perlen, die Monsieur Diamond da an die Oberfläche geholt hat, sind allesamt so gut, dass es schwer fällt, einzelne hervorzuheben, bzw. nicht gleich jeden Track als Single auszukoppeln. Alles klasse, sei es das unwahrscheinlich leichtfüßig schwingende „Let’s Get High“, das flehend-faszinierend-emphatische „I Wish“ oder gekonnt Rockendes wie der Opener „Mr. Fate“, bei dem es gleich als erstes heißt „Hey Mr. Fate, take me down your way and show me some places I’ve never been...“.

Genau ein solcher Platz ist es, an den ein Album wie “Out of Myself“ uns führt. So brillant und einfach und ausgefuchst und lässig hingeworfen zugleich klang tatsächlich keine ganz große Pop Platte mehr. Seit Äonen. Im deutlichen Unterschied zur teilweise ins Phlegmatische abdriftenden Kuscheligkeit der Kollegen Air zum Beispiel, vermag Diamond mit jedem Stück erneut erfrischend zu verblüffen ohne angestrengt zu verschrecken. Mit „Out Of Myself“ wird das Rad der Popmusik nicht neu erfunden. Aber es wird statt mit Luft mit tollen Songs gefüllt, bekommt glänzende neue Felgen verpasst und ein Profil, das auch nach zehntausend Meilen nicht an Tiefe verliert.

Denn was ist gute Popmusik je anderes gewesen, als das gelungene Überführen ewiggültiger persönlicher Einflüsse in einen eigenen Kosmos, der alles umfasst aber nichts zwanghaft festhalten will? Wir hören den Druck von Franz Ferdinand, die ungestüme Gitarrigkeit der Pixies, die Geschmeidigkeit von Air, das melancholische Jauchzen von New Order und im Klangbild die olympische Ausgewogenheit eines Tony Visconti. Darüber, dadrin, dahinter und dafür hören wir Benjamin Diamonds Stimme - genial, leger und eingängig. Da gibt es nicht mehr zu zu sagen außer vielleicht noch, dass es dieses Jahr kein vergleichbares Pop Album geben wird und, dass es bei Benjamin Diamond und dem großen Wurf, der „Out Of Myself“ ist, ausnahms- und glücklicherweise wirklich um Musik geht. Unverkopft kommt oft.

Die erste Assoziation beim Stichwort !K7 ist meist: „DJ Kicks!“ Mit diesen einzigartigen Mix-Compilations wurden DJ-Mixe erstmals auch für den „Hausgebrauch“ salonfähig. Seit über zehn Jahren liefern DJs und Musiker wie Carl Craig, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Stereo MC's, Nightmares On Wax, Thievery Corporation, Rockers Hi-Fi, Erlend Øye oder The Glimmers exklusive und ungewöhnliche Mixes für die DJ Kicks Reihe.

Ein ganz bestimmter Song ist für Benjamin Diamond Fluch und Segen zugleich, und niemals wird etwas über ihn gesagt und geschrieben, ohne diesen Titel zu droppen: „Music Sounds Better With You“! Mit diesem Geniestreich, der sein damaliges Projekt „Stardust“ als Vorreiter des „French House“ etablierte, setzte sich Benjamin Diamonds Stimme für immer in unseren Ohren fest. Mittlerweile klingt Musik zwar immer noch besser mit Benjamin Diamond, aber das House-Etikett ist weitgehend abgestreift und sein neues Album „Out Of Myself“ auf !K7 überrascht mit frischen, brillanten Popsongs. Und ob man nun Anleihen von Air, von New Order, Franz Ferdinand oder den Pixies heraushört – Diamonds Stimme macht seine Musik letztlich doch unvergleichbar. Zu den GAULOISES label nights reist Diamond mit seiner neuen, fünfköpfigen Band an.

A Guy Called Gerald

Dass der nicht unerhebliche Einfluss des DJs und Produzenten Gerald Simpson a.k.a. A GUY CALLED GERALD auf die Dancekultur nie an die große Glocke gehängt wurde, ist allein der Bescheidenheit des Künstlers zuzuschreiben. Doch dieser Mann brachte David Bowie den Drum’n’Bass nahe, war Mitbegründer der britischen Acid House Bewegung, Mitglied von 808 State und Pionier in Sachen Jungle. Mit seinem aktuellen Album „To all Things What They Need“ beweist er erneut sein Talent, Tracks mit einem Fundament aus Breakbeat, House und Broken Beats ideenreich und extrem atmosphärisch mit Acid-Sounds zu verbinden. Auch beim Platten Auflegen ist Gerald ein „Freestyler“, was auf den Dancefloors immer wieder für Hochspannung sorgt.

DJ Kaos

Als Resident DJ nicht nur in Berliner Szeneclubs wie Cookies oder Rio, sondern auch im New Yorker APT oder dem Culture Club in Gent, hat sich DJ Kaos seit Ende der 90er in Herz und Beine der internationalen Clubszene gespielt. Zudem war Kaos viele Jahre lang Teil des Trios Terranova, bekannt für seine mächtigen Breitwand-Sounds und den Zusammenklang von US-HipHop und europäischer Elektronik. !K7 veröffentlichte Anfang des Jahres sein erstes Solo Album "Hello Stranger", das sich ‚funkalectrisch’ und extrem tanzbar zwischen Disco, New York White-Punk, Italo-Musik und Rock bewegt und Kaos auch als extrem kreativen Produzenten outete.

Die GAULOISES label nights richten das Spotlight auf junge europäische Labels, die in verschiedensten Genres Pionierarbeit leisten: unabhängige kleine Plattenfirmen, die Newcomern und Nischen-Themen eine ideale Plattform bieten und mit Enthusiasmus und Courage für frischen Wind sorgen. Die Labelbetreiber sind meist aktiver Teil der jeweiligen Szene und spezialisieren ihren Output auf bestimmte Sounds und deren Weiterentwicklung. So wird der Name eines Labels immer öfter zum Gütesiegel, dessen Qualität vom Vertrauen und der Begeisterung seiner wachsenden Hörerschaft bestätigt wird.

A special anthology performance of Gerald?s past, present and future sounds. An influential character in electronic music, Manchester's Gerald Simpson has been a pioneer across the board - from the British acid house anthem Voodoo Ray, he followed with a string of successful releases on his own label in the early 90s that formed the blueprint for what was to later become drum n bass, culminating in the release of the proto-junglist masterpiece Black Secret Technology. 2000's Essence explored polyrhythmic beatscapes, vocals and melody produced during an isolated five years in New York. Following a move to Berlin, his latest album To All Things What They Need includes the EP First Try which displays all the Detroit-influenced depth and skill with which he originally made his name as a member of 808 State.

Sin dagli anni '80 A Guy Called Gerald è un grande nome della scena elettronica mondiale.
Nella storia post-moderna della dance music la sua visione , la sua versatilità stilistica e la sua apertura mentale agli stili ha enormemente influenzato il panorama mondiale della dance culture.
Tra i primi a sperimentare techno ed acid house, così come è stato tra i pionieri del drum'n'bass.
HA scritto pagine indelebili come quel "Pacific State" a firma 808 State, così come la hit "Woodoo Ray" a suo nome.

Nel '92 con l'album "Automanikk" sperimentava le ritmiche breakbeat e nel'95 con "Black Secret Tecnology" , divenuto un classico, sperimentava le ritmiche jungle, fenomeno divenuto poi drum'n'bass.

Il Mancuniano Gerald Simpson (così all'anagrafe) è una leggenda vivente.

Richiestissimo anche come remixer, ha lavorato tra gli altri con David Bowie, Tricky, Herbie Hancock and Bill Laswell.

"Since the late eighties A Guy Called Gerald has been a force in the world of electronic music. When the history of postmodern dance music is written he is ubiquitous: his visions, his stylistic versatility and open mindedness had a huge influence on the development of global dance culture."

Gerald Simpson's musical career started when he joined local Manchester band Scratchbeat Masters.. As an original member of the proto-techno legends 808 State, they released their groundbreaking first album, Newbuild, followed by the UK techno anthem "Pacific State". Finding a modern influence through Detroit techno and Chicago house, A Guy Called Gerald produced "Voodoo Ray" storming the UK and worldwide dance charts . With two tracks in the charts, A Guy Called Gerald became an international star and "Voodoo Ray" became the anthem that many indentify for launching UK's acid house movement. In 1995, A Guy Called Gerald released the classic Black Secret Technology LP becoming the leading pioneer of UK's urban sound. Since then he has remixed or worked with luminaries such as David Bowie, Tricky, Herbie Hancock, and Bill Laswell. On Essence, the first album produced for Berlin based !K7 records, Gerald freed himself from the constraints of drum n'bass and explored varied electronic sounds...

Es gibt Musiker, die zum richtigen Zeitpunkt den richtigen Song geschrieben haben und dafür auf ewig Stars sein werden. Und es gibt solche, die zum richtigen Zeitpunkt den richtigen Song schrieben, doch bevor die Welle des großen Ruhms über sie schwappte, waren sie bereits schon wieder woanders.

Der in Manchester geborene Gerald Simpson ist da ein fabelhaftes Beispiel. Wer weiß heute schon noch, dass viele Spielarten elektronischer Clubmusik durch diesen Mann entscheidend mitgeprägt wurden. Als Mitglied der längst legendären 808 State schrieb er Ende der 80er mit „Pacific State“ einen der ersten großen Techno-Hits. Während die Single und das dazu gehörige Album „newbuild“ ausgiebig die Runde machte, war Gerald Simpson schon mit seinen nächsten Ideen beschäftigt. Als „A Guy Called Gerald“ schraubte er parallel zur Bandarbeit an eigenen Tracks. Und auch da ließ der Erfolg nicht lange auf sich warten. In seiner Solosingle „Voodoo Ray“ sehen nicht wenige den Ausgangspunkt des britischen Acid House Hypes.

Was darauf folgte, ist der oft erzählte Weg zum Major und zurück. Sein zweites Soloalbum „Automanikk“ erschien noch bei Sony, bevor er diesen Weg endgültig abbrach und seine eigene Plattform Juice Boy Records gründete. Das dort 1995 erschienene „black secret technology“-Album knüpfte zwar nicht an den kommerziellen Erfolg der „Voodoo Ray“-Zeit an, schuf aber mit seiner Fusion aus Breakbeats, Jazz und Soul die Matrix für das, was seitdem gern als „UK Urban Sound“ bezeichnet wird.Gerald Simpson kann das alles egal sein, sein diesjähriges Werk „to all things what they need“, entzieht sich endgültig jeder Kategorisierung.

Vor sich eine heuchelnde Armada von Groove einflößenden Bässen die sich um die Hüften schlingen, hinter ihm eine gefährlich explosive Mischung aus 80er Rave, Acid House, Drum'n''Bass und einer große Portion Pionierarbeit. Das Ganze schiebt dermaßen auf das Tanzparkett, dass den kleinen wuselnden Beats nur noch die Flucht über die Wände direkt in die Atmosphäre bleibt. Die Luft wird dünn, aber der Visionär weiß wie man Ponys reitet, sodass nur noch die Frage bleibt "Can you feel it?!"

Interessante Themen und Strukturen bewegen sich gerne im schützenden Umfeld des Undergrounds. Genau dort gibt es genug Etagen, Platz und Raum für Wachstum und Entwicklung. Die Freiheit von Jazz mit dem Groove von House steht am Türschild dieser Etage- der Etage Noir.

Im Mai 2004 ging das erste 12" Vinyl von Parov Stelar an den Start und kickte mit deepen Housebeats und frechen Jazzrythmen elegant nach vorne. Parov Stelar reduziert dabei auf das wesentliche jedoch ohne dabei den Anspruch eines Floorfillers zu verlieren.

Im Land der Berge und Täler rockte er bereits die FM4 Charts und konnte die Aufmerksamkeit der Stuttgarter Pulver Records Crew auf sich lenken. Heraus kamen grandiose Remixe der "wanna get" Platte durch die Herren Dublex Inc und Inverse Cinematics!

Etienne de Crécy is één van de markantste personages van de Franse elektronische muziekscene. Begin jaren ’90, lang voordat de woorden french en touch onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden werden, bracht hij twee platen uit die geschiedenis schreven: ‘Pansoul’ en ‘SuperDiscount’. Deze laatste eigenzinnige plaat sloeg in als een bom en ontketende een kleine Franse revolutie op housegebied! Alex Gopher, Air, Cassius, stuk voor stuk hebben deze heren een deel van hun onsterfelijkheid te danken aan deze plaat. In 2004 releasde Crécy ‘Super Discount 2’, een superdansbare plaat waarbij de disco-samples werden vervangen door rauwe electro en minimale, scheurende acid-bassen. De French Touch weerklinkt in combinatie met dubby en funky electrohouse. Tijdens het Leuvense cultuurfestival KULTURAMA zal Crécy samen met een A guy called Gerald de Leuvense Silo doen daveren. Laat je oren die avond meesterlijk masseren en bijtel alvast de komst van deze twee heren in je agenda!

Sin dagli anni '80 A Guy Called Gerald è un grande nome della scena elettronica mondiale. Nella storia post-moderna della dance music la sua visione , la sua versatilità stilistica e la sua apertura mentale agli stili ha enormemente influenzato il panorama mondiale della dance culture. Tra i primi a sperimentare techno ed acid house, così come è stato tra i pionieri del drum'n'bass. A scritto pagine indelebili come quel "Pacific State" a firma 808 State, così come la hit "Woodoo Ray" a suo nome. Nel '92 con l'album "Automanikk" sperimentava le ritmiche breakbeat e nel'95 con il album, divenuto un classico, "Black Secret Tecnology" sperimentava le ritmiche jungle, fenomeno divenuto poi drum'n'bass. Il Mancuniano Gerald Simpson (così all'anagrafe) è una leggenda vivente. Richiestissimo anche come remixer, ha lavorato tra gli altri con David Bowie, Tricky, Herbie Hancock and Bill Laswell. E' ora qui per presentare il suo nuovo album, in uscita in questi giorni, come sempre stilisticamente diverso dai precedenti, che nel titolo „To All Things What They Need" è in breve il riassunto.

Nel corso della serata verrà presentato un film/documentario dedicato proprio a A Guy Called Gerald.

Zu Gast ist die quirlige, und wie alle erfolgreichen Frauen im Musikbizz nur 160cm großen, Princess Superstar aus den Vereinigten Staaten. Ebenso am Start sind Dj Kaos, Teil des Berliner Dauerbrenners Terranova, A Guy Called Gerald, Urgestein der Englischen und Berliner Electro und Crossoverszene, sowie Special K7 Gäste aus Belgien, wahrlich würdige Freunde der 2ManyDjs in musikalischer und performerischer Hinsicht, einfach nur Geil.

A GUY CALLED GERALD

A Guy Called Gerald Simpson stammt aus Manchester, wo er des Öfteren seine Mutter auf den Weg in die Kirche begleitet, um vor allem den Orgelklängen während der Messe zu lauschen. Dadurch inspiriert, beschäftigt er sich fortan mit Musik. Vor allem für Marvin Gaye's Soul und die Jackson Five kann sich Gerald begeistern. Später bereichern Funk und Hip Hop seine musikalische Leidenschaft. Mittels eines Kassettenrekorders wird kräftig an Stücken wie "Rockit" von Herbie Hancock herumgewurschtelt und experimentiert; sozusagen die ersten Gehversuche in Sachen Produktion. Ein anderes Unterfangen ist die Manchester Band Scratchbeat Master und danach steigt Simpson in der Hit Squad ein. Später nennen sie sich in die recht populären 808 State, einen Entwicklungshelfer des Techno, um. Gerald ist am Entstehen der in Großbritannien kommerziell erfolgreichen Technohymne "Pacific State" und dem zugehörigen Album "Newbuild" maßgeblich beteiligt. Nebenher werkelt Simpson als A Guy Called Gerald an diversen Soloprojekten, da ihm seine musikalische Integrität sehr am Herzen liegt. Mit "Voodoo Ray", einem Sound mit den Eckpfeilern Detroit Techno und Chicagoesker Housemusic, feiert er weltweit einen Erfolg. Es folgt ein Majordeal mit Sony Music und der Release der ersten Platte "Automatik". Seine Popularität steigt, aber auch der Wunsch, von der Plattenfirma nicht gegängelt zu werden. Folgerichtig trennen sich beider Wege und Mr. Simpson ist wieder underground. 1993 erscheint "28 Gun Bad Boy", eine weitere Evolutionsstufe von Drum & Bass. Mit dem 1997er "Black Secret Technology"-Album etabliert sich Gerald Simpson endgültig in der Riege des UK Urban Sounds und arbeitet u.a. mit David Bowie und Tricky zusammen, obwohl er mittlerweile in Brooklyn zu Hause ist.

Since the 80’s, A GUY CALLED GERALD, has proven to be among the most INNOVATIVE MODERN MUSIC FIGURES. His influences is International, and through his versatility he has spawned genres and generations of music culture. He has been producing music a wide range of music such as : TECHNO, ACID HOUSE and DRUM’ N’ BASS.

A GUY CALLED GERALD has been part of legendary 808 STATE and released "Wax on the Melt". Then, he released the album "Hot Lemonade", which scored a TOP 20 SMASH WORLWIDE, with the seminal "Voodoo Ray", a track cited as the FIRST to put BRITISH HOUSE MUSIC firmy ON THE MAP.

In 1992, GERALD produced some breakbeats singles, which were compiled and released on the Lp "28 Gun Bad Boy". Melody Maker said about the album : "If there was a blueprint for what would transform rave ino jungle/ techno, then it is".

In 1995, he followed up with the critically acclaimed "Black Secret Technology Lp” incorporating GOLDIE and the vocals of FINLEY QUAYE. Then, he has been touring worldwide with TRICKY and working with the likes of DAVID BOWIE and HERBIE HANCOCK.

In 2000 comes "Essence" on !K7 Records. The UK GUARDIAN newspaper described it as "a perfect synthesis of GERALD'S ryhtmic technique nd soulful drum’n’bass… a TRIUMPH". He also did a remix for the soundtrack of the movie "REQUIEM FOR A DREAM" and a collaboration with BILL LASWELL and HERBIE HANCOCK and a tour with BEBEL GILBERTO.

In 2002, he moved back to Europe and he is working on his new album "To all Things What Thy Need", which will be released in January 2005.

Expect to hear new music paradigms once again……
