In the ebb and flow of what’s popular in electronic music, there are those who have larger followings or whose names are on more bloggers’ fingertips at any given moment in time. But no artist in the genre commands as much respect, from fans and peers alike, as consistently and influentially as Detroit-based DJ and producer CARL CRAIG. As an artist, a label-owner and club DJ, he is one of the few who has literally helped shape the sound of modern electronic music, with an inventive career that has spanned 18 years. A Guy Called Gerald Since the 80’s, Manchester, UK native and now NYC (?) resident A Guy Called Gerald, born Gerald Simpson, has proven to be among the most innovative modern music figures. His influence is international, and through his versatility he has spawned genres and generations of music culture. Since his early experimentation with techno and acid house into his groundbreaking contributions to drum & bass music, AGCG’s art and craft has perpetually evolved regardless of his individual successes in each of those genres. Come down and celebrate the year gone by with some of Future Classic’s finest and a very special UK guest… A Guy Called Gerald is 20 years of dance music incarnate. From “Voodoo Ray” in 1988 to “In Ya Head” released on Germany’s respected Perlon label this year, this man is a self-written bible of dance music. He is one of a few special producers who entered dance when it was jackin’ and has never let up. He was the first UK acid house producer and achieved the rare feat of having not one but two instrumental dance tracks in the UK charts at the same time. He formed 808 State with a drum machine, a 303, 2 Roland SH101s and two other humans. Gerald has collaborated with everyone from Frankie Knuckles and Goldie through to Derrick May and Herbie Hancock. His remix credits are equally impressive with reworks in his back catalogue for David Bowie, Lamb, Stone Roses, Can, Tricky and Roman Flügel as well as having toured with the likes of New Order and Bebel Gilberto. When you catch a list of his most recent gigs it is apparent that this eclectic appeal and versatility is still at the core of A Guy Called Gerald. Playing live is the mode Gerald prefers most and has seen him play many of the world’s most revered gigs including Fabric, Panaroma Bar, Watergate, Glastonbury and Hacienda. Where do you start with A Guy Called Gerald? A hidden gem, the gateway between Chicago house / Detroit Techno and the UK dance music explosion in the late 80s. He is one of a few special producers who entered dance music in the jacking zone. He is the first UK acid house producer and probably the first producer to have two instrumental dance tracks in the UK charts at the same. He formed 808 State with a drum machine, a 303, 2 Roland SH101s and 2 other humans. His collaborations stem from Frankie Knuckles, Goldie, Finley Quaye and Derrick May through to Herbie Hancock, remixed for David Bowie, Lamb, Stone Roses, Black Uhuru, Can, Tricky, Roman Fluegel and The Orb and toured with New Order, Tricky and Bebel Gilberto. When the history of postmodern dance music is written he is ubiquitous: his visions, his stylistic versatility and open mindedness had a huge influence on the development of global dance culture. Very early on, he experimented with acid house and helped pioneer the style that was later called jungle and drum n bass. Fiercely independent he is preparing himself for a string of new releases, the launch of his online shop and touring worldwide… MARIJA B JONES (Marija Bozinovska Jones) experiments at first with spacial installations and later with video. At the beginning, in year 2000 she starts working as well as a VJ besides the ongoing video installations in collaborative projects. After her art partner relocated to Switzerland, she continues with her work as a solo artist and gets engaged in various creative projects that involve work with video: conceptual installations, theatre plays, visual collages for concert performances and live club visuals. She performs at London Fashion Week, ICA and Great Eastern Hotel. She builds her style based on a new school of visual aesthetics, thus preferring amateur look that is distanced from the hard graphical approach of the typical club visuals culture and, in the same time, subverts its fundamental significance. Impulsivity and experiment, which always are a part of the live acts help her, above all, in the attempt to combine mediums and in that way to extend her diapason of creation. https://www.guycalledgerald.com https://www.youtube.com/vjmarija https://www.opusaudio.com https://www.tacheles.de Kontakt: info@allisrhythm.com Thanks to Milos, Doreen, Philip and Bill. 3rd May: The Hacienda 25th Anniversary Tour, The Junction, Cambridge, England |
DetailsSaturday 3rd may | doors 10pm-4am It was the club that inspired a musical generation, defined a scene and put dance music firmly on the map in the UK then the world. Although the old site on Whitworth Street, Manchester has now been replaced with a block of flats, the feeling and energy behind The Hacienda, and those heady days will live one forever. Originally conceived, founded and financed in 1980 by Factory Records and New Order through a deal steered by Rob Gretton, the manager of the by then disbanded Joy Divison, The Hacienda first opened its doors on 21 May 1982 sporting a Factory Records catalogue number of Fac 51, a pioneering interior designed by architect Ben Kelly, Graphics by Peter Saville and featured Bernard Manning as the opening night act. Not surprising that all if these forces combined turned The Hacienda into where is widely recognised as the birthplace of Acid House, and is responsible of shaping the face of UK club culture as it has since been known. This summer sees the 25th Anniversary of The Hacienda since the legendary Manchester nightclub first opened its doors in 1982. Peter Hook (Hooky) – New Order/Joy Division bassist & co-founder of The Hacienda is behind the launch of ‘Hacienda 25’ – a series of very special events/projects to celebrate the life of the legendary club. This is going to be an event not to be missed. So book early to avoid disappointment. The line-up includes: Graeme Park |

Faccio musica per me stesso. 28 March: Urban Gorilla, The Plug, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England |
DetailsUrban Gorilla, The Plug, Matilda St, Sheffield S1,Yorkshire, England Friday 28th March There's been a lot of talk of "twenty years of acid house"; of late, with all kinds of people clambering over each other to hop on the memorial bandwagon. And fair play to them. Here at UG, we haven't bothered, cos we don't really do that kind of thing (and maybe we just didn't think of it anyway). But if we were to put on a twenty years of acid house line up, then it would probably look something like this. And be bloody fantastic. A Guy Called Gerald is a genuine icon of acid house music. Not just because he was responsible for one of the scene's defining and all time classic tracks "Voodoo Ray", and a member of one of the greatest groups working in the sound, 808 State (with whom he produced another defining classic "Pacific State"). All that helps of course. But what makes Gerald a true icon, for me anyway, is his determination to keep experimenting in music and technology, which has reaped so many rewards within and beyond house music. He was a prime mover in the development of jungle and drum'n'bass for example, and produced one of that scene's greatest albums as well. Last year's album "Proto Acid - The Berlin Sessions"; saw his feet firmly back in the realms of acid house and techno, and this special live appearance ties in with the project behind that album, an apparently long held dream to Does Paul Woolford epitomise where acid house is at in the UK now? Well, it fits the blurb pretty neatly, but quite frankly, who knows? What I do know is that Woolford is one of the finest producers and DJs in the country today, inspired by, working from, and building on the template of acid house, if you like. I also know, on the evidence of past appearances at Urban Gorilla, that he always rocks the dancefloor, in a way that few others can. As a result, we love him at UG, thought he'd be the perfect compliment to AGCG, and know he's going to tear the place up and leave everyone with a smile on So yeah, it's not a twenty years of acid house party. It's not about nostalgia. It's just another amazing night at UG (and of course, the UG ressies are on hand to do the business as always). But it is a little bit special. And it's going to be flippin' fantastic. |

Performing a live set upstairs, we welcome along dance producer extraordinare, A Guy Called Gerald... AGCG needs little introduction; from his first forays in the 80's with b-boy electro funk, a string of singles with his 808 State collective, and producing one of British house musics most recognized hits, Voodoo Ray, he has more than made his mark. He has since gone on to produce and collaborate on many projects including working with David Bowie, Herbie Hancock, Ursula Rucker & Finley Quaye. Now located in Berlin, he will be showcasing his live set encompassing Detroit drenched techno and sparkling electro - do not miss! Joining him upstairs, we also say hello to Enzo Siragusa from Electric Sex & Vitalik fame alongside the residents... We have another treat in store for you downstairs too as those Frankfurt/Ibiza hedonists, Monza, take over the basement! Residents Dorian Paic and Vera will be joined by Miss Fitz for this session. Doors open at 9pm and close at 6am. Please arrive early for this one!!!! Promotional links / |
