An iconic name in dance music, A Guy Called Gerald stands out for consistent innovation, excellence and refusal to compromise. A Guy Called Gerald kick started Europe’s acid house frenzy releasing the first UK acid house record, the ’88 classic ‘Voodoo Ray’ and 'Pacific State' and went on to lay down the blueprint for jungle / drum n bass.

Nine albums and 25 years of independence later, he continues to push the boundaries of electronic dance music touring worldwide bringing his "true school" flavor to a world overloaded with pop music.

Although his remixes are relatively enviable including the likes of David Bowie, Cabaret Voltaire, Black Uhuru, Finley Quaye, Lamb, Tricky and The Stone Roses, it is Gerald’s own productions and refusal to plough anyone’s furrow but his own which has marked him out. A Guy Called Gerald is responsible for the birth of British dance music as you know it today and continues to explore what is possible both in the studio and in the club with his "Live in Session" performances.

Chant to Cool the Earth | Global Broadcast

Can sound change the world? Guarani and Kaiowá indigenous communities in Brazil understand sound as a technology for communicating with cosmic entities and earth spirits. In today's context of biodiversity crisis, these indigenous elders are performing ritual “chants to cool the earth” to restore cosmic balance and mitigate ecological collapse. According to them, the global transmission of sacred chants extends their effect on the earth, enabling audiences around the world to not only hear these indigenous voices but also participate in amplifying their power.

In support, international electronic musicians A Guy Called Gerald, Matt Black and Youth will join Guarani & Kaiowá shamans in this global broadcast, using electronics and radio to amplify indigenous sound technologies. The broadcast will be created collaboratively during the community’s visit to London for the Sounding Planetary Futures Festival at UCL.

By scheduling this global transmission on the first day of the UN Biodiversity COP16, we highlight the importance of listening to indigenous voices and their strategies for climate action. In the face of catastrophic decline in diversity of all kinds - biodiversity, cultural diversity, and diversity of thought - we must develop diverse strategies for cultivating sustainable planetary futures.

We invite audiences around the world to participate in this Guarani and Kaiowá intervention to restore ecological balance: turn on your radios, tune in to the global broadcast, and share it across your networks.

Sonic Encounters | Guarani & Kaiowá Shamans meet A Guy Called Gerald

This sonic encounter brings the musical expertise of A Guy Called Gerald into dialogue with the sonic traditions of Guarani and Kaiowá Indigenous communities from Brazil. Guarani and Kaiowá elders and Gerald will collaborate sonically, bringing into dialogue sound as 'Wifi to the Gods' through traditional Indigenous instrumentation and analogue synthesisers through which A Guy Called Gerald shaped the birth of UK electronic dance music.

They will also be joined by Alex Akal during this session. Drawing on his extensive knowledge of musical instruments from around the world Akal will enter the sonic conversation with sound technologies from diverse global cultures.

This event is part of The Guarani and Kaiowá Sound Lab, a weekend ambisonic sound installation that will host a dynamic programme of practical workshops, panel discussions, interactive installations and musical performances to explore the diverse ways in which sound is understood in different contexts. By inviting participants to interact with the ambisonic speaker array and experiment with the movement of sound in space, this Guarani and Kaiowá sound lab will explore the possibilities of sound as a medium for knowledge exchange and cross-cultural dialogue.

The Guarani and Kaiowá Sound Lab takes place within Sounding Planetary Futures: a multimodal events series that brings together indigenous thinkers, interdisciplinary researchers, creative practitioners, innovation industries and museum curators in a global conversation on planetary futures. It is coordinated by UCL MAL in collaboration with the Centre for the Anthropology of Sustainability (CAoS), the State University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UEMS) and Amoenus, together with Guarani and Kaiowá communities from Brazil.

Our baby’s completes its second trip around the sun this weekend, and you’re invited!

What began as a 3-month pop-up has grown into 24 months of being a Hackney Wick staple and we couldn’t be more grateful to everyone who’s kept the magic alive since October 2022, whether that’s through drinking, dining, digging or dancing!

In true AMF style, we’re pulling out all the stops for a birthday blowout this weekend, bringing some legends and household nearests and dearests to the decks.

Friday sees our booth taken over by the iconic A Guy Called Gerald, a pioneer of the UK acid house scene, serving up his genre-defining sound and timeless grooves. Jos, the ever-friendly face of the record shop, joins him alongside Rabzi + 99hp and Isaac.

On Saturday, we’re upping the ante with a special takeover from The Cause, welcoming Borne Fruits’ head honcho Amaliah, known for head-spinning blends of house, techno and UK underground sounds. Instead of running around the bar floor, AMF bossman, Darush, will be running up serious heaters alongside Cause FM.
Sunday wraps up with a dub & soul special, featuring dub pioneer and Lover’s Rock originator Dennis Bovell, who’ll be joined by rave stalwart Billy Nasty with a rare dub set. Our club resident Jerome Hill and AMF family member Elisa nicely round off the weekend.

For those who didn’t know, we’ve been working hard behind the scenes, making tweaks and turns to outdo ourselves, and this weekend marks the first full weekend unfolding on our newly tuned, crystal-clear sound system, perfect for late-night moves until 4am!

You know the drill: walk-ins are welcome but booking ahead is a good shout since we’re expecting a full house. All your favorite food vendors are on hand, washed down with our classic and seasonal sips. Bring your mates, bring your pups (until it’s dance o’clock) - this one’s for everyone!

“This is our Mba’ekuaa. Our Technology. You have your Mba’ekuaa, and we have ours” - Nhanderu Tadeu, Guarani and Kaiowá Indigenous Shaman.

How can sound shape planetary futures? Indigenous communities in Brazil understand sound as Mba’ekuaa or technology, which can have powerful effects on the world. In the current global context of biodiversity crisis and ecological collapse, Guarani and Kaiowá indigenous shamans are using sound as a tool to dialogue with spirit entities and restore balance with nature. Their sacred instruments are described as their “wifi to the gods" where the sounds of the instruments are seen to open a portal between worlds.

Join us on Wednesday 9th of October at The Bloomsbury Theatre for a Multimedia Performance and Immersive Sound Ritual led by Guarani and Kaiowá shamans from Brazil. This groundbreaking multimedia show draws together indigenous communities, electronic musicians, cutting-edge video mapping and immersive sound artists, anthropologists, computer scientists and innovation researchers, bringing diverse forms of technical knowledge into dialogue.

Collaborating artists include: A Guy Called Gerald, Scott Hill, Kelvin Mbaretê, Matt Black, Blanca Regina, Guarani and Kaiowá Shamans Nhandesy Roseli, Nhandesy Fausta and Nhanderu Tadeu, Edward Griffiths, Vytautas Niedvaras, Georgina Brett, Andrea Esther Kerecsen and multimedia researchers Fabi Fernandes and Raffaella Fryer-Moreira. The event will also include participation from Sarah Bear Long, Fleur Pennington, Laura Wilcock and Chris Park, UK based druids who will welcome the Guarani and Kaiowá elders in a cross-cultural encounter of shamanic practice.

The work draws on a four-year partnership between the UCL Multimedia Anthropology Lab(UCL MAL), the State University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UEMS) and Guarani and Kaiowá indigenous communities in Brazil, and has developed a participatory approach to preserving indigenous ancestral knowledge. By adopting a radically collaborative and experimental approach to emerging technological innovations in VR, 360 video, ambisonic sound, photogrammetry, interactive digital platforms, and remote sensing devices, these projects aim to counter the historical exclusion of indigenous voices from both the narration of their history and the imagination of collective planetary futures.

Wi-Fi to the Gods is the opening event of the Sounding Planetary Futures series, taking place across UCL this autumn. This multimodal festival is coordinated by the UCL Multimedia Anthropology Lab (UCL MAL) in a collaborative partnership with the Centre for the Anthropology of Sustainability (CAoS), the State University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UEMS) and Amoenus. Through a dynamic programme of musical performances, panel discussions, workshops and immersive sound installations, these events invite London's diverse creative and research community to explore how Guarani and Kaiowá concepts of sound and technology can help rethink planetary futures.

The Sounding Planetary Futures events programme and the projects it showcases has been supported by the British Museum's Endangered Material Knowledge Programme, UCL Knowledge Exchange and Innovation, UCL Research Institute of Collections, UCL Grand Challenges, UCL Global Engagement, UCL Institute of Advanced Studies Octagon Fund, IAS Music Futures, UCL Centre for Critical Heritage Studies and The Roddick Foundation.

D.E.L.S. - Doka's monthly electronic live music gathering - has turned one, and we thought it would be fitting to celebrate with an extra long session of live improvised electronic music. Starting out intimate and experimental and ending in an all out dance-floor situation.

Joining us from the UK for this special event, is none other than the Manchester acid house protagonist A Guy Called Gerald. The man who continues to push the boundaries of electronic dance music will be bringing his "true school" flavor to Amsterdam. Gerald’s recent studio encounter with Julien Chaptal, turned into an impromptu improvised studio jam. Their spark will be brought back in Doka. Further on the bill: local DJ hero, Eric de Man, who has been making a determined come back on the electronic live scene. We expect roaring, infectious grooves to be churning out of his trusty MPC and his electro-rchestra! Zsa Zsa impressed us so much with her debut performance a few months ago that we couldn’t resist inviting her once more to the jamming table. Her warm and deep melodic grooves have a way to reach deep down into the soul.

In a world filled to the brim with DJ’s, very few stand out with such strong accolades as our next guest!
.
A Guy Called Gerald is no stranger to the world, not only is he one of house music’s earliest, he literally helped craft the UK Dance scene by purveying quite frankly the first UK acid house track Voodoo Ray, and was a part of 808 state, which saw him release another very important imprint, Pacific State.

Along with that Gerald Simpson was responsible for Juice Box Records, which in its 7 years basically created the blueprint for jungle and drum and bass alongside releases by masters at work Goldie & Finley Quaye.

We are absolutely honoured to be hosting this pioneer in RXP+, as he showers upon us a 3 hour LIVE set.

Acid house pioneer and a jewel in the crown of UK dance music heritage, A Guy Called Gerald has been moving dancefloors since as far back as 1989. His seminal club hit ‘Voodoo Ray’ is considered a timeless dance classic, while the ‘Pacific State’ track he recorded as 808 State went on to inspire countless dream-house and ambient-rave titles. Known and loved for bridging the gap between Detroit techno, Chicago house and UK rave, he’s continued to perform, produce and collaborate throughout a wildly successful career.

United Nations Anti Racism Day Demonstration

On 16th March 2024, R 3 Soundsystem’s HOUSE AGAINST HATE mobile protest unit will be hitting the streets of London along with thousands of demonstrators to protest against the racist, xenophobic, transphobic, anti-immigrant, pro-Israel contingent in the UK establishment.

R 3 Soundsystem, in association with Black Artist Database, Stand Up to Racism, Love Music Hate Racism & Homo-Centric Records have invited a host of international DJs & musicians to reconvene once again, around our soundsystem to tell the UK establishment to STOP THE HATE.

Activist and DJ Gideön says, “As the Tories ratchet up their anti-immigration rhetoric, as Trump plots his second attempt at dismantling US democracy and as Labour fail to call out Israel’s genocide, we must unite
once again around our community soundsystem to protest the global consolidation of rightwing power. Bring banners, loudhailers and friends plus everything you need to kick-start the revolution.”

We will be collecting money for Medical Aid For Palestinians.

R 3 Soundsystem is a consortium of DJs, musicians, producers, recording artists, record labels, festivals, nightclubs, sound systems, activists, movements, and cultural organisations, all united in our love of music
and our rejection of right-wing nationalism.

R 3 ’s three Rs stand for:

RESIST: THE GROWING RIGHT-WING IN UK GOVERNMENT
REJECT: KICK OUT THE TORIES, CEASEFIRE NOW
REVOLT: COME TOGETHER AGAINST THE POPULIST HIJACK OF BRITISH POLITICS
