Likewise A Guy Called Gerald's follow-up to his club hit Voodoo Ray, FX, which maintains a mesmeric grip with simple elements.

VIDEO REVIEW

A Guy Called Gerald Single Review: FX / Eyes Of Sorrow

Similar neon/fluorescent colour & director David Barnard for "FX" by a Guy Called Gerald. Quite on old video, yet nevertheless fits in well with Snap! since both use the "I've got The Power" sample. "FX" is a great video where every slight effect subtly, yet effectively on camera matches the bird sound effects. The woman fuses with a pelican and Gerald compliments a white parrot. The birds in flight have a holographic rainbow colour, like that of a Visa card.

A GUY CALLED GERALD
"FX (Mayday Mix)"

Derrick May remixed 126 3/4 bpm sharply snicking A GUY CALLED GERALD 'FX' (Mayday Mix)' (Subscape AGCG XI, via CBS), coupled by the new disembodiedly muttered and chanted monotonous jittery 117bpm 'I Can't Wait No More' and literally 'Pacific State' echoing 122bpm 'Specific Hate'.

Still apparently only on promo, this 'flute' tootled and synth washed atmospherically swirling but beefily rumbling and thumping 0-117-0bpm instrumental is another example, along with 'Pacific State', of what is best described as 'new age house' (flipped by the also 117-0bpm but more monotonously acidic 'FX').

A bit of a disappointment once you know what Gerald's capable of. 'FX' is a wittering blob of House-cum-techno that, like 808 State's more self-indulgent moments, sounds at times like a quadraphonic demonstration disc. The other A-side, 'Eyes Of Sorrow', is yet another mood piece to assuage club-goers in the throes of a nervous breakdown. Do such people exist?

Labouring under the misapprehension, as I was, that Gerald had split up, 'FX' came as something of a surprise. This is elevator music of the highest quality and the man looks set to become the John Barry of the '90s. Not as instantly catchy as 'Voodoo Ray', but just as insistent, this record sounds like it is speeding up and slowing down, an effect which those of us who grew up with a knackered record player will not find very novel.

Acieeed! Thought it was old Roly Gift on holiday from the FYCs for a moment, but no. Gerald has compiled a string of beats and bibbly bobbly noises that, while leaving me as cold as last year's Turkey, will doubtless be a smash and have you all dancing round the tree over the next month. A hit, but a dull hit.
