Not originally going to be released until this limited edition single, which is probably one of the rarest Rose's singles out there, as Silvertone (unusually for them!) haven't decided to reissue it, which (of course) they've done for every other Rose's records many times over....! The 'Bottom Won Mix!' samples heavily from 'Voodoo Ray', and is remixed by Gerald (as proven on the 'I Am The Resurrection' single), despite the credits on the CD itself.

The version found on a 12" bootleg is different from either of the two mixes here, and thus, remains unreleased (allegedly neither Ian Brown nor John Squire liked this mix). Gerald undertook a number of different remixes of 'Fools Gold' (about 6), from which The Stone Roses then (allegedly) chose the ones they liked. However, whether they liked either of these two mixes remains a mystery, as this release was a low-key affair, and when 'The Bottom Won Mix!' later appeared on the 'I Am The Resurrection' single in 1992, the Roses had long since left Silvertone, so they would not have had that much input into the release. In 2000, the release of 'The Remixes' album finally saw the reissue of the 'The Top Won Mix!' (albeit in an edited 7:14 min version) - again, a release which had little Roses input. Just over a decade ago The Stone Roses emerged from the depths of Manchester and created such a massive impression on the indie scene that even now they are still imitated by bands the length and breadth of the country.

With their own unique style of magnificently understated indie-psychedelia, The Roses will always be celebrated for their inspirational act of uniting the mutually exclusive worlds of indie guitar pop and club culture. Their work acquired legendary status and The Stone Roses are widely regarded as one of the most important indie/rock bands of the last 20 years.

After last year's release of the Anniversary Edition of their debut album 'The Stone Roses', and the inclusion of the album in almost every critics 'Best of the Millennium' polls, the release of this new album The Stone Roses - 'The Remixes' is the next step in continuing legacy of The Roses.

Twelve tracks remixed and revered by some of the most innovative producers/DJ's of the moment are included on the album - some old, some new, some old and previously unreleased and ever only heard by die-hard fans who managed to get hold of dodgy bootleg cassette copies from Camden Market. Since the 80s, Manchester UK native, A GUY CALLED GERALD, born Gerald Simpson, has proven to be among the most innovative modern music figures. Here, he adds acid beats infiltrated with funky bongos in parts, and reworks the bassline with acid-synth sounds.

Comments:

Promo version of The Stone Roses' album (primarily edits, and in a different order to the album), featuring a number of remixes tagged onto the end, including the "Top Won Mix" by Gerald.

The mix is an exclusive edited mix (a full minute less than the one on "The Remixes" album) - the full version is only available on the rare 'Fools Gold' CD single (a full 4 minutes longer than this version).
