Trip City reviews.

Comments:

Tape originally with book, 'Trip City', which was meant to be a 'soundtrack' whilst reading the book. Initially, only available via mail order in the NME, unfortunately the tape is no longer available today, as it was really very good. The story outlined a 'trip' that would last 24 hours, concerning a guy called Valentine (hence 'Valentines Theme'). 'FX' appeared soon afterwards in a remixed form as Gerald's first single for Sony, whilst a remixed version of 'Trip City' appeared on one of the 'Automanikk' singles. Many thanks to Paul Wise for info on the 12" White Label.

NME, Trip City Advert, 22nd December 1989

Trevor Miller has website here, with some information on a possible "Trip City" film:

"TRIP CITY"
Synopsis:
A nightclub promoter returns to town and is thrown into an insidious world of designer drugs, psychosis and murder. Filled with mind-bending hallucinogenic moments, Trip City veers into the realm of 'Alphaville' and neo-noir of the French new wave..
Comments:
The current screen adaptation of my debut novel (version 5 if we're counting) is set in a semi-futuristic locale. I call it the neo-Alphaville version. Could be Paris, London or New York. This blurring of national boundaries really gives the screenplay a sparse, modern and sexy feel.
-- 2007 UPDATE --
There is talk of shooting this project in Manchester, England - with involvement from Northwest Vision and Threshold Studios. "

There is also a website on "The Brain Club" - a club which both Trevor Miller and Gerald frequented:

Gerald at the Brain Club, London - photographer: Mark Wigan (C) 2006

"By 1988 through friends like Chris Sullivan, Sean McLusky and James White I had become quite a fixture in various West End Nightclubs. I had done number of ill-fated video projects with Chris and Sean, and was even M-C'ing with James under the dubious name Mr. Love. A chance encounter with Frank Hatherley lead to my debut novel, TRIP CITY ' which was published in 1989 by Avernus Creative Media which was owned by legendary sci-fi author Brian Aldiss...Trip City was a unique product ' packaged with a soundtrack cassette of original music by A GUY CALLED GERALD. Although well reviewed by some, Trip City was pigeon-holed as the ACID HOUSE novel. Through some misbegotten P-R, it was suggested you 'read the book while listening to the tape.' As you might imagine this concept fell on deaf ears. Regardless of that, I am still very proud of Trip City and it managed to land me at the Edinburgh Festival, the BlueCoat Arts Centre in Liverpool, and New York's Chelsea Hotel."
