[Note: Text below states that he would be joined by The Babymen - this is incorrect]

Manchester born poet, artist and musician Edward Barton who wrote songs for Kylie Minogue and Orbital will be giving a performance lecture musically assisted by The Babymen. He will give a playful insight into his music making methods and lyrical techniques.

All you need to bring for this one is a pen and paper, but most importantly, an open-mind!

Barton is known for his eccentric stage performances and use of home-made instruments. He has had top 30 success as a songwriter with hits including 'It's a Fine Day' (Opus III), 'Confide in Me' (Kylie Minogue), 'Halcyon' (Orbital) and 'Happiness' (Pizzaman). In 1989, released through Barton's own label Wooden Records, an LP called Edward Not Edward featured covers of Barton songs by diverse artists like The Inspiral Carpets, 808 State, Dub Sex, Ted Chippington, Louis Phillipe and A Guy Called Gerald. Barton was a regular fixture of the eighties music scene in Manchester, supporting bands such as Stump. His television appearances have included performances on The Tube and Tony Wilson's The Other Side of Midnight. He was rumoured to have appeared on Wogan in the late 80s playing guitar in Tears for Fears' backing band. His radio appearances have included at least one guest spot on The Mark Radcliffe Show.

‘and a Panda’ is a new audio box set by Edward Barton, which includes his new studio Album ‘and a Panda’ along with lyric book, postcards and a selection of prints of Bartons Paintings.

Edward Barton is a cult figure in Manchester. His career spans three decades as a filmmaker, artist, curator, performer, songwriter and poet.

From a first bizarre appearance on Channel 4’s music programme The Tube in 1984 singing ‘I’ve Got No Chicken but Ive Got Five Wooden Chairs’ while playing guitar with a wooden spoon through to the controversial Dadaist gallery Oblong he set up in Manchester’s Affleck’s Palace his position as a Manchester and National Treasure is assured through the constant generation of creative chaos. Barton’s ‘90’s performance night, Hip Replacement, developed a Studio 54 like reputation in Manchester’s music scene, and his own song writing has seen him work and chart with the likes of A Guy called Gerald, 808 State, Opus 111, Norman Cook and Kylie Minogue.

This latest collection is a joy to experience: Edward speaks the language of pop with an accent so deliciously and seductively foreign that the mother tongue will never sound quite the same again. Edward has a rare ability to make music that is simultaneously beautiful and funny- most artists have to do these things one at a time.

AfterHours at The Whitworth Art Gallery

An Evening with Billy Childish plus Gramophone DJ on Saturday 16 Feb. After Hours Wearing Clothes with Edward Barton on Saturday 5 April.

The Whitworth Art Gallery launches a new occasional programme of evening events with two performances to coincide with the gallery’s exhibition Blake’s Shadow: William Blake and his Artistic Legacy running until 6 April.

Produced with Manchester artist Mike Chavez-Dawson, the first two events of the AfterHours series feature outsider artists Billy Childish on 16 February and Edward Barton on 5 April.

An Evening with Billy Childish is an intimate solo encounter, where Childish shares biographical anecdotes and observations through his raw poetry and ends with blues played on an electric guitar and sung through a vintage value amp.

Childish is a poet, painter, musician and visionary and is the founding member of the Medway poets and Hangman publishing. As founder member of the Stuckist movement, he has been described as ‘a welcome thorn in the side of the British art establishment’ and is a cult figure in America, Europe and Japan. In his prolific career to date, Childish has painted over 6000 paintings, released over 100 records and published over 60 volumes of poetry. Childish’s array of poetry books will be available on the evening.

After hours Wearing Clothes with Edward Barton features the breadth of the creative output of this cult Manchester artist. The evening features recitals from his Bad Leg poetry book, live and musical enactments including highly controlled live painting. Barton has created a series of specially made publications to accompany the event.

Edward Barton doesn't normally play gigs; we feel very special! Ed is a bit of a legend in Manchester, he started out writing poetry but quickly moved into songs as a way of getting girls. Since then he's written tunes which have been sourced by all kinds of artists from Orbital to Kylie Minogue. Ed was wearing an outfit which, it turns out, was an old pair of curtains he took with him on a recent trip to Gambia. More information, click here. or here.

MON 16 OCT
Bad Leg BAD LEG with ED BARTON
Launch of the first collection of verse from songwriter, filmmaker, curator, performance artist, painter, designer and now... poet. When Ed’s not penning chart-stompers for the likes of Kylie Minogue (‘Confide in Me’), and Opus 3 ('It’s a Fine Day'), he is consistently pushing the packet on behalf of Manchester’s art and music generally. From his show-stopping appearance on The Tube in the mid 80s (playing a ukulele with a wooden spoon), to his curatorship of Manchester’s first (and only) Dadaist gallery, Oblong… his signature across the disciplines is unmistakable. His music nights Hip Replacement and Misery challenge the notion of what a live event can be, and as a video maker, he’s worked with the likes of James, Dub Sex, The Inspiral Carpets and others. He also draws and crayons. Tonight Ed performs from his unexpected first collection of poetry, Bad Leg (Comma Press), complete with special, undisclosed guests, and a general one-off return for the Hip Replacement magic.
Guests to include Rachel Pratt, The Nature Corner and Welsh rap act, The Delicated Hammers.
Plus films by Sharon Keighley, Scott Davenpoet and others.
Stand well back from the stage and don’t look Ed in the eye.

A little more info:

'Auto Test Pilot' has be created (as Art) by 'Walking My Troubles Away' (Mr Chavez-Dawson & Robin Nature-Bold) who bought you the first and second ever appearance (in Manchester) of 'Wild Billy Childish & The Buff Medways', the album launch of Skinny Dog's 'Superqueens', and numerous appearances by Edward Barton. ATP is dedicated to beatnik stupor - erratic and eccentric ideas, it aspires to be a hub of bohemian discourse.

We strive to work with the damm right awkward:

Artists, poets, people with unruly record collections (we prefer a record player to a DJ), old or new lecturers, performers, mad professors, prophets and general folk who need a leg up.

ATP are keen for people to do 2 minute mini-lectures on an odd thing that may or may not have happened to them.

We might even start doing show and tell...

October 23rd Manchester MDMA (Manchester District Music Archive) Seminar

"Afterwards there were drinks and refreshments followed by one of Elliott Eastwick's legendary pop quizzes at Bar Centro on Tib Street. Cerysmatic's team featuring Larry Gott out of James, Ed "I've got no chicken but I've got five wooden chairs" Barton and Sarah Champion eventually won on a tie-breaker [* "He only played guitar in the Smiths for eight months - who is he?"] with splendid prizes being dished out all round. OK, it did help that the bonus round was "Name all of the albums by James"!"

ROBIN NATURE-BOLD & BAND(ISM)
Edward Barton / Mr Thompson + Very special guests
DJs: Xander (Phush/Flux/Redlight) and The Anonymous Ex (Dreams That Money Can Buy/TVOD)
A surreal extravaganza of punk-pop and poetic rock'n'roll. After his acclaimed performances at this year's In The City and Liverpool Biennial, the avant-garde neo-dandy Robin Nature-Bold & Band(ism) are to set to break into heavenly delights with their idiosyncratic psychedelic punk-folk. "They're like a cross between Billy Childish & Rolf Harris" claims Flux Magazine Editor Lee Taylor, other claims include, "Robin Nature-Bold is the love child of Peter Sellers, Andy Warhol and Andy Kauffman". After his recent controversial gig at Salford's Kings Arms, Ed Barton returns to complete a much-inspired set of eclectic electric beats, squeaks and bleeps, accompanied with vocal patter to blind and bewilder. Heralding from the Stoke-on-Trent region, Mr Thompson has become synonymous with vocal effects and a range that would have Mongolian throat-singers' toes curling with envy. The infamous DJ Xander cuts up on the decks with a dusty collection of vinyl he discovered at the bottom of the Dead Sea whilst on a Scuba diving holiday, and the Anonymous Ex plays a rare breed of vinyl that will blind upon viewing.

Crime

On show at an art gallery in Manchester is a "sculpture" entitled Stolen, so called because all the material used in its construction has been nicked.

Artist Edward Barton, 34, sent a shoplifter round local supermarkets to bring back cans of lager, nappies, washing powder and toys, all of which he placed in a cage to form his sculpture.

Said Steve Murphy, chairman of the city's police authority, "Only lunatics would call it art. This person is openly promoting crime. It would make the artist an accessory to crime and I am sure the police will be most interested in talking to him."

January Larry Gott last week played a gig with vocalist Mark Curtis and James associate Edward Barton at the launch of a new bar called SixtySouth in Waterloo near Crosby.  In an interview with the Crosby Herald, Larry described the music thus "our style fuses tribal, folk, jazz, classical and R + B music to create a totally unique genre".  Larry and Edward are planning to write more songs with a view to releasing an album.

Edward Barton: A rock bard, musician, composer, poet and artist based in Manchester, well known for writing the Opus 3 hit "It‚s a Fine Day" playing a guitar with a wooden spoon on The Tube, 84 (this also debut of one of his paintings), and his performance nights/events "Misery"and "My Eye Hurts" Barton was the first to open a gallery (Oblong) in Manchester‚s "Afflecks Palace" Because of their Dadaist and often crime-related edge Oblong‚s shows often get as much coverage in the pages of the tabloids as they did in the art press. Since the closure of Oblong in '92 Barton has been writing a lot of poetry and music. He has become a rather reclusive painter and art maker who only surfaces when pestered. For this show Barton will present a series of paintings he made just before the stroke of midnight on New Year‚s Eve, 1999. For further info on Edward Barton visit: www.edwardbarton.com

"On 22nd April 1988 we supported Microdisney at the Town and Country Club in London. The second support act, who we shared a dressing room with, was Edward Barton, bearded author of ‘It’s A Fine Day’, purveyor of fine wooden products (including Wooden Records) and maker of the chairs in James’s ‘Sit Down’ video. Of all the support acts we played with I regret not having got into conversation with Mr Barton the most. At the time we thought he was some odd eccentric. To be honest I still suspect he is an odd eccentric, but one I’d have liked to have chatted with a while"
