Yes, you need to be careful like I said but I reckon playing about
with it a little bit to try to revive it is better than writing off an
otherwise dead drive altogether.
Having said that I have taken the lids off several ST506 or SCSI
drives over the last six months or so, usually with very good reason
like the latest one where one of the drive heads had broken off and
lodged between the disc and the case preventing it from spinning
up, but I have never got a drive working again after taking the lid off
so this is definitely NOT RECOMMENDED!!

Do make sure you rotate it the right way! And if it's a stiction problem then
only a fraction of a turn should be needed, nothing like a full revolution.
