Subject: The ROMs (RE: Re: DIGITAL DOMESDAY BOOK GETS NEW LIFE)

>Maybe it would be better to contact the copyright owners ourselves and
ask
>that, after the work is preserved in a media neutral form, they
consider
>releasing it for PC's ... and who does own the copyright?

This
has potential ramifications for everyone interested in emulation. Suppose
there
were a circumstance where Domesday were to become available
to the public at some
cost or other. I assume the original copyright
holders would want to exercise their rights
to the effect of making
a profit, since that is what all companies want to do. I'd be happy
to
pay my £50 or whatever, and I'm sure so would many others, so I don't
begrudge
them that.

A problem for the rest of us would be the
Acorn ROMs, currently owned by Pace. They
haven't been released into
the public domain, and aren't free to distribute. When I
emailed a
staff member at PACE concerning this issue, the reply I got indicated that
I
could distribute the ROMs with
ElectrEm only because they were not going to become a
commercial
concern for PACE. Supposing they did via Domesday, I think we could
probably
kiss goodbye to being able to distribute the Acorn ROMs as we currently
do.

-Thomas
BA flight sale now at www.lycos.co.uk
