50 Albums That Killed Rock 'n' Roll

15. 808 STATE NEWBUILD
(Creed), 1988, www.808state.com

Named after the Roland TR-808 drum machine, 808 State, with its influence on acid house and industrial music, is one of the most important forces to emerge from the British acid house scene.

The group was formed in a Manchester record shop in 1988 by club kid Graham Massey; indie label owner Martin Price, who released the raw, acid sounds of Newbuild on his Creed label; and Gerald Simpson, who now records as A Guy Called Gerald.

Newbuild established a decade of 808 projects, including DJ gigs, remixes for David Bowie and Soundgarden, and original productions such as "Cubik" and "Pacific," 808's 1989 dance-floor hit. It also served as precursor to the industrial rock movement, which has been a gateway genre for many of today's dance fans. Price and Simpson have long since left 808 State, which now includes DJs Andrew Barker and Darren Partington, and Graham Massey.
