The day belonged to the beloved Phantom, the home team flying four standard machines for a couple of flypasts, seen here taxiing back in to their ramp. JG72 and the former unit JBG36 have flown the F-4F from Hopsten for 27 years and the Luftwaffe plan to keep the 110 ICE Phantoms in service until 2012. With current planning and the impending closure of the base however the howl of J79s (which began in 1965 with the F104 of course) will soon be just a memory here at Hopsten.
